- In this video we talk about Sony's long-awaited updating of the Sony A7siii mirrorless camera, and how owners have gotten frustrated with the brand's lack of communication regarding the future of the A7s line of cameras.
Thanks to @Sony @ImagingbySony for the video clips!

This is very much a baby step in the right direction. Sony isn’t doing a great job at keeping me a customer. LUMIX is writing the playbook on customer retention.
I agree.
The main reason I didn’t buy the FX3 is because it didn’t have an EVF. The EVF on the a7 S3 is literally miraculous. And it’s not just the FX3 is more expensive but then you have to buy a cage and you have to buy a monitor.! It’s a never-ending battle to nail focus, unlike the A7S3!
Same for me, I really like the EVF!
Number 1 selling point. Which is hilarious haha. It’s like looking into an IMAX movie.
The EVF is glorious!!!! Best ever - specially outside in the sun - FX3 ng there
Sony released the Sony A7iv in October 2021, which is a camera basically half the price of the A7Siii and 1/3 of the A1, yet it has features that Sony has never implemented in their flagship cameras. The time for the firmware update now announced was early 2022, not 2 years later in early 2024. At that time they certainly had an obligation to support a camera (A7Siii) that was barely a year old for most people who purchased it.
I think that is incredibly bad marketing towards the people who paid a premium to purchase the latest flagships. If you look at second hand prices for a Sony A1 at present, they have almost cut in half in the Netherlands, meaning the first owners of these cameras take a real financial hit on the resale values of the cameras and will think twice before buying one again. The fact that it took them 2 years to realise, may be too little too late.
I am sure it also affected their lens sales, as the GM lenses all have heavy focus breathing, and without focus breathing compensation being implemented for video shooters, many A7Siii-shooters steered away from the Sony GM lenses, seeking either cheaper or third party alternatives.
Sony treats their cameras as disposable, and rather sells you a new camera (which also quickly depreciates the value of current camera models!). I have a Sony A7Siii and A7iv, but I really dislike this approach from Sony, and have since steered away from them towards Fuji for photography.
I shoot raw video so the lens breathing feature is useless to me. What I really wanted was granular shutter adjustments to help with flickering lights and screens. I have a couple of A7IV's and I use that feature all the time.
When do you think the Sony A7SIV will be coming out? Fantastic video btw? Though I think the 4K DCI is a crop, not an expansion of the wideness.
Thanks! DCI 4k is sometimes referred to as True 4k. It's the same as regular 4k but with extra width on the sides.
I'd probably stick with Sony's 5-year pattern of a7s releases. I'd say 2025, but it's just a guess.
@@DOPJoshDiaz Yes I know what DCI is, but the "extra width" will be done by cropping the top and bottom. The Sony A7SIII is designed for an aspect ratio of 16:9.
I believe it reads the full sensor so 17:9. Not cropped just wider
It boils down to money. They want customers to buy fx models. Which is not fair. After spending quite a bit on this older camera, the end user could leave completely sony for betrayal from Sony...
This is the right moment other manufacturers take over Sony customers, meaning pissed off end users.
Make ads against sony and advertise. It's a world of compilation.
Not sure if it can be done, but I was hoping for dynamic active mode stabilization for the sony A7s3, like in the zv e1
LUT support would have been nice
Yeah...
I want face focus on clear image zoom 😢😅
Omg yes.
Absolutely right! I was eye AF in CIZ more than I want anything else.
imagine Sony can activate Blackmagic Design's BRAW recording it could make hell of a difference
Great commentary on this topic.
Much appreciated.
Great and informative video.
DeNoise on and off switch . Please.
Good idea.
All I wanted was breathing. Me happy.
You got it!
My takeaway is that Sony doesn't give a shit about us, and that I should get the next Panasonic flagship. The S5II isn't a flagship, but it still shows how much poise a hybrid camera can have. It's just missing the polish (where is my animal eye af).
Wait, no external monitoring via Smartphone using USB C? Come on, I even have a Sony 1 IV phone with their monitor software, etc... and still I cant get this feature? I have no words...
Either way when you try to update its will brick your camera
Send it back to Sony, and they'll fix it :)
I don't understand why they can't add something as simple as shutter angle, which cameras from other brands at half the price have. I'd like to use my custom modes for something other than just frame rates haha
it's because they hate you. these firmware features that take years to receive are things I can code before lunch break.
best thumbnail...it's like a horror movie lol
The scary a7siii.
Timecode via multiport?
What is the point in even existing for the s3? Its not a good atills camera and sony refuses to make it a great video camera compared to the fx .
Is it worth to buy a7siii in 2024?
Do you need a great video camera that uses the Sony E Mount? If so It certainly is.
i cant listen to this podcast / article whats the gyst
This is a very disappointing update
I just want timecode 😭
Ooo, I forgot about that! That would've been great.
What feature are you missing in respect of time code? It can generate timecode and transmit over HDMI (e.g. to sync external audio and video recording), and accept time code via the mic port (e.g. via a Tentacle Sync). It does not have a dedicated time code port.
like someone else mentioned....Tentacle Sync.
@@Edwin-- I want to be able to jam sync timecode so my mic port is not taken up.
