does this kill the tree? i know that if you cut the bark around a tree for more than 2/3 of the way it dies but i also hear that with a birch you are just removing the outer bark. anyone know the answer?
When you cut into the Birch bark you have to know how far in to cut or you will kill the tree, no it will not grow another bark, and you have to gather it at a certain time during the year. I know Earl personally and he is a true Anishinawbe and knows the old ways of our tribe! and our teachings here can be different to another tribe somewhere else.
I REALLY want to learn how to build a birch bark canoe, and I can find no one who knows in the UK... also there are very few suitable Canoe Birches. But I will not give up! (If you know how to build one of these and want to pass on your knowledge to a willing and capable student, drop me a line!)
the birch tree rarely ever dies cause yeah its only othe outer bark... do u really think that native americans would still do this if they knew they were killing it! native americans are always very resourceful and never take more than they need.. soo i doubt that i hurts the tree any! plus did u see the tree cry?? i didnt haha
That is some very nice birch bark.
it does not kill the tree if you don't cut the inner bark and it does grow back because I have harvest second growth bark about 20 yrs later
The bark doesn't carry the nutrients, it just keeps it waterproof

no he never killed the tree. Birch are scared to us and we are not allowed to kill such a thing. Its the rules and the will of our people.

being resourceful only leaves it for someone else to kill off ie the bison, buffalo..
