  • From the camera original, full interview taped on October 22, 1989. Dale Earnhardt taped these comments about Grant Adcox about 1 month before Grant was killed (Nov 19, 1989). So it is sadly tragic that both men would share a similar fate. In this tape, Dale is kind enough to give Grant's team some soundbites to help Grant find sponsors. Grant was killed in the 1989 Atlanta Journal 500 in the NASCAR Winston Cup series. This footage of Dale Earnhardt would seem to be during The AC Delco 500 held October 22 at North Carolina Motor Speedway. In that race, Alan Kulwicki won the pole. And it ended up being Mark Martin's first career Winston Cup victory. This footage has never been seen before this posting.

Dale tryin to help him out - you can tell how much respect Dale has for Eli Gold - Eli Gold was one of the reasons NASCAR was so special to me - a big reason

I was at the ‘89 Pepsi 400 race and ran into some of the Adcox family. They found out I was from Knoxville and gave me an Adcox hat. I believe Grant died later that year. I’ll always remember that.

I agree. I think he was just saying, "Another interview. They go on and on..."
Dale sent a letter to the Adcox family after Grant died, and was very attentive to their grief.

At Herb Adcox Auto in Chattanooga they have a large trophy case of Grant's trophies and photos. I hope I get the chance to videotape that someday and make a little montage of Grant's highlights. Dale Earnhardt came to another Chevy dealer I worked for around 1990, and as everyone knows he was very pleasant to his many fans and really enjoyed being with them from what I saw. In this video it is simply nice to see him.

Grant and my dad were very good friends. My dad worked on Grant's team for a few years in the seventies. I vaguely remember him as a very small child but I've heard so many good stories.

Grant was a personal friend of mine, I greatly respected his Father also, but Grant was a stocky bear of a man, very gargerious, kind, generous , honest to a fault. I was much younger but he always made me feel he loved me as a person, never talked down to me when I ask a question. I had the privilege of serving him lunch at a small Deli owned by another fantastic person ( Yogi Center of Chattanooga Tennessee) when I was in Collage at UTC. Often Grant and I would be the only ones there and we talked much about everything. All these years and I so much would love to hear his wonderful greeting as he came in just one more time.❤

It just amazed me how Dale stayed a regular guy and hunted and fished and farmed and worked even after he made millions of dollars and all the trophies. He still remained Dale Earnhardt even with all those accolades. Many people saw a bit of themselves in Dale and he was a working man and so were the fans that loved him the most.

Yes, Moose6340, I believe it is. Eli, at that time, worked exclusively with MRN Radio, and in later years, also did some work for The Nashville Network and CBS before returning to MRN (Motor Racing Network) full time in 2001. When Barney Hall retired as the studio host after the race at Sonoma in June of 2014 (2 years ago), Eli took over full time from there.

I think that if Dale were still around, the landscape of NASCAR would be completely different. DEI might have been the top team of the sport and Dale Jr. would have been the prize driver and he would have been the top owner once Dale could not handle day-to-day operations. Hell, in my mind he would have been an 8-time champ had he lived, I picked him to win the title in 2001, but Jeff Gordon was my second choice.

I could be wrong but I played roulette next to a guy in New Albany Indiana that looked and had the mannerisms as Michael and then he said let’s try some nascar numbers.... pretty sure it was him but I didn’t want to bother him.

Thus leading directly to Adcox's death.
