  • Episode 3 of my Disney Ruined It Series. They ruined their own 100th anniversary in so many ways! They forgot about Walt. They lost more than a billion dollars with numerous movies that bombed. And Wish, the movie that was supposed to mark the 100th anniversary of Disney, was a disaster.
The story is told with news clips, interviews, film footage, film posters, TV clips, and RUclips videos.

To recap, Disney executives are concerned their brand is (checks notes), Too Disneyish.

Years ago my friend just happened to be roommates with an animator who worked as an in betweener on Sleeping Beauty. His job was to draw the frames in between the key frames. I came to know him and he told me tales of being a very young man, working for Walt Disney. To my surprise, he gifted me his drawing board as well as his animation light table and ruler that he used in the production of Sleeping Beauty. He met his wife while working on the animated feature. So his gift holds a lot of magic for me. Most of my paintings as well as comic book pages are created on that board. It travels with me everywhere I go.
Yeah Disney is sucking right now and the world is as crazy as it ever was. However, Disney animation from 1959-1960’s has had a huge impact on my comicbook and animation work. Sharing this tribute/overview of Walt the man as well as the Disney corporation was the right thing to do.
    Keep it up.

This is a good warts and all retrospective. A reminder that Disney has been making both quality content and forgettable crap for 100 years. Even growing up with Disney Home Video, I was unaware of many of these titles from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

That opening Iger clip is what sparked this video. Just unbelievable.

Thought the current Disney board was all about being abnormal… how confusing-

I enjoyed this video tremendously. Thank you! I hope one day Disney can reclaim that ingenuity that brought so much joy and happiness to so many for so long.

"If that reverence--if that adherence--continued, it would get in the way of innovation." I grew up in Eisner's era, and they didn't call it the "Disney Renaissance" for nothing. The Little Mermaid premiered when I was a toddler, and Iger took over while I was in college. My understanding is that it was a "tumultuous" era for the company (Wikipedia), but it was an amazing time to be a kid.
IMO, Iger's idea of "innovation" has come to rely too much on the purchases of other properties and studios for profit, and relying on those studios to do the innovating for themselves instead of keeping it in-house. Not everything Disney's done in-house under him has been terrible, but Iger is so much more interested in pushing out as much content as possible, regardless of quality. I'm not here to discuss agendas, because it doesn't matter what kind of message you want to send if you don't slow down and take the time to do it well and with purpose. It seems to me he's got them throwing too many ideas at too many dartboards. There's not enough focus, and the company is spread too thin. He's failing because he's watered down his properties.
Thank you so much for your hard work. This is a magnificent tribute.

Eisner, for all the shit he gets, was willing to take risks for the sake of combining innovation with reverence for the spirit of Disney. Not all his risks panned out, and that’s why he gets shit, but those that did literally saved the company.
Along comes Iger who decides to screw real innovation and decides to play it safe to not risk losing a single dollar since he was all about money. And he’s lost. He decided no risks, can’t even risk pissing anyone off who might not like that a fat octopus is a bad guy or that a teenager might be petulant. Look at the live action Pinocchio for the pinnacle of “can’t have misbehavior.” He fucking ruined it all.

Great video . There is lots I have never heard of . You can’t beat the classic cartoons made before our time though. I loved Gummi Bears growing up in the eighties.

The only reason Disney even still exists is because people still visit their parks in some insane desire to pursue the nostalgia of an age Disney themselves stopped caring about.

Really nice work and thank you. I’ve loved Disneyland my whole life, however I haven’t been to either park in 5 years.
I’m not a radical left or right guy- I hate politics, but the spirit of the company is just gone. I hope someone can find it because I personally miss and I know most of us do.

Nice. But where's The Black Cauldron? And what about the Gen X New Mickey Mouse Club with Lisa Whelchel (big crush😍)?
    Still.. Nice job

I messed up skipping the black cauldron! That was a mistake. I went with the Gen x MMC of the 90s since it had Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, etc.. but I should have also done the Welchel season now that you mention it. 😬 thanks for watching and commenting!

It truly is incredible how he stepped in and destroyed the company from the jump. I don’t understand why anyone would do something like that. Let’s destroy this thing everyone loves and someone worked his whole life to build! What a great idea!

They completely lost their identity. It’s sad to see because all the old stuff Iger tried to downplay is timeless. It doesn’t matter when you were born
(I’m ‘96 and even I’ve seen most of the coloured classic Disney shorts, don’t even mention the films)

The stupid part, he was in Hong Kong Disneyland I think he was talking about the kids were all over the Pixar characters and couldn’t care about the mouse.
The assumption being that Disney wasn’t about innovation… talk about hiring the most tone deaf person to run your company.
All Disney did was innovate, he was a futurist with the unique ability to encourage the future by making it feel familiar. I hate what has happened to this company.

@@fredflux2738: the man built a animation studio into one of the biggest entertainment companies (if not “the” biggest entertainment company) that ever existed and practically conquered the world. People just can’t contemplate how massive a project something like Disneyland would of been.
People running the show today are still living off the foundations he built
