thank you so much for reacting to this piece of art ❤ for more context, i wanna let you know that this is not a movie yet. Ethel Cain is actually a stage name. Ethel’s real name is Hayden Silas Anhedonia. to clear up the story a bit, it tells the tale of ethel cain. in 1991, she falls in love with a man named Willoughby who eventually goes away. (she sings about him in House In Nebraska) afterward, she runs away, meets a man named Logan who gets killed. (Western Nights) then she gets kidnapped, pimped, murdered, and cannibalized by a man named Isiah. The song thoroughfare romanticizes what actually happens. oh! and by the way, isaiah did plan to kill her the whole time, but the cannibalizing was part of a mental breakdown he had after killing Ethel. Hayden herself has said that she is planning to release two albums and one EP in the future. the upcoming EP is called “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You” and the two other upcoming albums are set to tell the tale of Ethel Cain’s mother and grandmother. she is also in the process of writing a book and possibly directing a film for the story. ❤ if you wanna check out more of her stuff, i really do recommend the Inbred EP. it doesn’t follow the preachers daughter storyline at all, and it’s a little more to your liking for sure!! p.s: i know what u mean by feeling a little uncomfy vibing out to the music, but remember that it is just a fictional story (even though things like these can happen). but there’s nothing wrong in appreciating the vibe of the songs lmao. much love!! ❤
just truly amazing self production - the way she's able to control a listener's emotions with a VICE GRIP in every song is astounding. she should score movies fr
Love this interpretation! Very thorough. I only listened to this album once because I found it very unsettling. I agree that it is allegorical, builds a whole world around a scary concept, and the listener is left to just sit with it and wonder what the fuck they just experienced. I’m still in that state weeks after listening.
Ethel is currently working on her "Ethel Project" which consists of 3 albums, 3 books and 3 movies- each one telling the story of the preachers Daughter, his Wife and his Mother
lmfaooo the jamming to american teenager and then getting slapped with the rest of the album 💀 this is my favorite album and i just fell in love with you 💜 also i had to turn off ptolomea the first time i listened to the album because it was giving me such bad anxiety
If you're looking for more music thats similar, I'd recommend her three EP's, Nicole Dollangangers three most recent albums, and unbecoming by vyva melinkolya. Both of them are very close friends of ethels. The demo for hard times was actually produced by Vyva, but ethel changed it last minute. She says she regrets this. I'm going to be honest here, I think Nicole and Ethel are the best lyricists alive. In ethels EPs, the first, carpet bed, is acoustic guitar ballads with simple vocals. Nobody talks about it but it's truly beautiful. Golden age is where she starts doing the background vocals (Gregorian chants). Golden age is alt rock (nothing too hard) with some trap influences and her dream pop vocals. Inbred is alt rock, a little harder than golden age, but nothing like ptolemaea. The production is closest to gibson girl. Inbred is my fave work from ethel aside from her unreleased stuff. For Nicole, my fave album from her is married in mount airy. Its her most complex and transcends genres. Nicole has very high vocals. Not like Ariana, they're more ethereal. Natural born losers was Nicole's breakout album. I believe it is ethels favorite album, she even has the name tattooed on her arm. Its alt rock, but not very hard. It's rhe most similar to Ethels music. Heart shaped bed is similar to married in mount airy. Its more complex than NBL, but less than MIMA. There's folk, folk trap, sorta expirimental (not too weird) genreless songs, and one metal song. The metal song does not have any screams or yelling or anything. Finally unbecoming by vyva. Its alt rock, again, nothing too hard. Very slow. All of these alt rock albums fall under the category of slowcore. Unbecoming was Ethels fave album of 2023, and MIMA was another one of her faves. Side note, none of these aobums are scary like ptolemaea. I can't speak for unbecoming, but Ethels and Nicole's work is dark. Most of Ethels EPs are more sad than disturbing. Natural born losers has some disturbing lyrics but uts well worth the listen. Nicole's other two albums are dark, but again, more sad than dudturbing. Last edit, this is little talked about, but Isiah doesnt eat her whole body. He made a meal, and you might be able to infer from the lyrics in strangers, but he gets food poisoning from her.
Yes! So here for you loving this - her music, though heavy, is so refreshing in todays music landscape. Incredible storytelling and atmosphere, & self produced. I hope more mainstream people take note of her
You vibing to strangers was so damn funny haha. I loved the side eye after “you’re so handsome when I’m all over your mouth” and then you just giving in and getting into it
Ahahahaha Gibson Girl was how I found Ethel. I had been looking for sexy pole dancing music, and after listening to a few songs on the @88DS channel, Gibson Girl came up on auto play and I was obsessed.
42:27 It’s song the same vibe as watching a horror movie; yeah characters are dying but you know it’s not real so you enjoy the thrill it gives off. In Ethel Cain’s album tho it’s not so much thrill as it is soaking in & appreciating the artistry of the storytelling thru music 🖤
She is like mazzy star, fiona apple, lisa hannigan, pj harvey, a bit of neko case wrapped in on singer/songwriter. Dark but damn how can you not feel the emotion unless you are dead.
I feel like some of this stuff happened to Ethel Cain. Sadly.. I just felt way way too much feeling when Ethel screamed "Stop" in Ptolemaeus. Like from my perspective as an SA survivor that "stop stop stop stop" hit me in my soul. Even if it was just a script and a character that Ethel made, some parts of it just hit entirely too hard for me to feel like they just made a story to make a story, you know. It's just so deep, and in the songs you can feel the hurt and pain. I love what Ethel Cain has done as an artist, especially with this album. 😭
LMAO THE DESCRIPTION. Also I'm fucking dying at the thunderstorm during the perfect time. Ptolemaea (when Ethel is being tortured) and August Underground (where she dies and yes that was the walking of the man who killed her at the end).
i heard american teenager and decided to fall asleep to the album not having heard the rest and i woke up to ptolemaea 😭😭 great album though my favorite of all time
ethel really fucked us up by going from a pop-y song to immediately a song abt being the reason why the person she loved, left. lets you down so quickly. like DAMN GIRL 😭
I love her but Hayden put us through whiplash this whole album, like we go from August Underground to Televangelism and we’re just supposed to be fine with it? 💀
If you like a deeper, more soulful and emotive voice like Ethel Cain, I SO HIGHLY recommend you react to Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood! It's a little too gorgeous
Loved this reaction ❤❤ I HIGHLY recommend reacting to her albums Inbred and Golden age. They are like half as long as this album and just so phenomenal ✨✨😍
Lmao your reaction to ptolomae was spot on, just pure terror. I don’t blame you for not being able to finish it, satanic ritual death hymns aren’t for everyone 🤣
If you're ever looking for another album to have a similar reaction to, I'd recommend "Sinner Get Ready" by Lingua Ignota. It's HARROWING. In some ways it's more palatable (it isn't directly about someone being killed and eaten, I don't know that any of the tracks are QUITE like Ptolemaea) but in some ways it's a harder listen (it's about the artist dealing with real things that happened to her) but it's genuinely one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Girl you need to get your playlists even more organized. I know you have a ‘reactions’ playlist but that’s useless. Should be divided by artist. Taylor Swift reactions playlist. Doja Cat reactions playlist. Olivia Rodrigo reactions playlist. If you have reacted to someone 3 or more times, playlist.
THE THUNDERSTORM DURING PTOLEMAEA HAD ME ROLLINGGG 😭😭😭😭 impeccable timing
LMFAO fr
LIKE 😭😭😭😭😭
NOT THE THUNDER RIGHT WHILE LISTENIN TO PTOLOMAEA LMAO GURL YOU GOT THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE 😭
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
it’s also all self produced which is INSANE. She is so inspiring fr
No literally… like when I saw that I said WHAT
i heard it was co produced by her and 2 others
@hadeurmom5796 indeed she did do the initial writing on her own but there is a producer credited as well
"I'm scared like will I be able to relate"
girl i hope not damn

She's also going to write a book trilogy and a screenplay for a movie trilogy.
Idk if she can direct but wouldn't surprise me if she does
Thank you so much for this context !!
@@SulySolanothank you for responding to this so I know you know now! So many reactors never acknowledge the context comments
Thanks for clearing up some of my confusion. I didn't understand how many guys there were. 🥸

Yes!!! It’s insane
She actually does movies scores, listen to her The God score here in youtube, it’s so haunting
THE THUNDER WHILE PTOLEMAEA IS TOO PERFECT
"the neighbours Brother came in a box"
Our girl: *squeaks* I love it😂❤❤❤❤
😭😭🤣
When I first heard that I thought it was “my name is mother Cain” and I was like yeah it is!
it’s like this album makes me wanna vibe but it also makes me sob, so I’m stuck here dancing with tears streaming down my face 😭
first of of all - LOVED YOUR REACTION!!!
Love this interpretation! Very thorough.
I only listened to this album once because I found it very unsettling. I agree that it is allegorical, builds a whole world around a scary concept, and the listener is left to just sit with it and wonder what the fuck they just experienced. I’m still in that state weeks after listening.
Omg thank you for this interpretation!!!
Hayden improvised televangelism !!
This album makes me remember just how underrated a GOOD ad lib is
YESSSS it’s heavenly
Im pretty sure Hayden also played all the instruments for the songs as well as writing, performing and producing the songs
That’s even more impressive omg
Trust me, the struggle of Gibson Girl being a hot song but also thinking about the meaning behind it is rough lol
NO TUCKING WAY YESSSSSS THIS IS MY NO 1 ALBUM OF THE YEAR SO FAR WITH OVER 1000 TIMES STREAMED AYAYAYYYYYAYAYYY IM SO HAPPY I LOVE YOUUU

The disclaimer at the end of Ptolomaea 😂😂😂😂 "Nothing on the artist... But I'm SPOOKED!!"
"Listen i'm not hatin on the song, i'm just scared shitless" 🤣

knowing that the creator of ethel cain is a trans woman raised in the south adds so much context and meaning to this story.
