About KMA…
Formed in February 2007, KMA provides children with safe transport, a nourishing meal and caring adult supervision while they are introduced to the magical world of music. Mastering a musical instrument is stimulating and learning to love music is healing for these children who come from, and live in, abject poverty and trauma.
KMA is a music school with a difference, where we use the healing power of music to provide a structured, safe and stimulating space for children to spend their afternoons. In addition to music lessons we offer opportunities to perform, go on outings and local or international tours, meet and engage with music professionals, as well as receive hands-on homework support, a warm and nourishing meal, safe transport and access to an on-site social worker. Here, children are listened to, in a safe space, without judgement. Our pupils have the opportunity to set goals, to dream and to thrive, despite the circumstances that they were born into.
Our psycho-social support programme includes food security, music therapy, mentorship and leadership programmes and ensures all aspects of the child's well-being is addressed.
Our programme has won numerous awards, our teachers are some of the best in Cape Town and we offer tuition in an exciting range of 23 instruments. Our children grow in confidence as they regularly take turns to perform in small groups and on the big stage. Our funders recognise the impact and frequently invite our pupils to perform at festivals in South Africa and abroad.
