Great insights. Especially appreciate how you point out the compositional demands of the music absolutely requires exceptional musicianship. Their astounding talent as musicians is so wide-ranging and so deep they leave me in awe every time I listen to them.
Thanks for another great reaction and breakdown for Band-Maid. You just saw two different sides of the multiple sides of Band-Maid. And you absolutely would enjoy going to one of their Okyu-ji (what they call their live concerts, which translates to "Servings") as it is amazing. You'll be jumping, clapping and singing without a care as you experience the Maids in action. Their energy is through the roof. You'll leave the show with a grin on your face and have Band-Maid live withdrawals for a month or two, but hey, it's so worth it! For the next song, try the Official MV "From Now On", a kick 🍑instrumental. Or "Onset" Official Live, another kick 🍑instrumental. In this one, you can see MISA (bass, The Barefoot Assissin) do her slight of hand move. "Moratorium" Live is also a great piece. "Puzzle" Official Live and then find "Puzzle" Acoustic Live and do it as a two-for reaction. Two completely different feels for the song. Awe heck, get a dart and let fate take you on the journey. It's all good, just some better than others.😂 Keep rocking! PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
There is an interesting story behind "Black Hole". According to Akane, Kanami asked her how fast she could drum. Akane said around 190 bpm. Then Kanami went off and wrote "Black Hole" that peaks at 220 bpm! So Akane goes and writes the drum patterns for the track. She wrote 7, for the band to choose which one. She labelled them: 1. Easy 2. Comfortable 3. Normal 4. Possible if I work hard 5. Tough 6. Painfull 7. Hell Akane said "Of course, the band chose Hell"!
Great analysis! The "lady guitarist who does the backing vocals" is Miku. She founded the band, is the main spokesperson, writes most of their lyrics, and sings lead vocals on some songs. She didn't know how to play the guitar when the band started and was taught by Kanami (lead guitarist).
These two songs together provide a great introduction to the broad types of music Band-Maid creates. Great reaction and insight into the songs. Thank you and looking forward to the next one.
A guy who absolutely gets it! Excellent reaction and discussion about these incredible Maids. For people who really understand rock music, as you clearly are, it’s clear that Band-Maid is a very special act of which only a few come along every decade who make music at this remarkable level of composition, arrangement, instrumentation, orchestration, songwriting, playing, performance. We are lucky to be alive during the Maids career and to savor and bask in their incredible music! I doubt I’ll make your live stream - a bit late for this old EDT time zone rocker these days. I know you’ll have a blast hearing a great deal more of the Maids. If you do do another reaction before that, I suggest you do 1 or 2 of their slower tempo songs -“Daydreaming” - OMV - do the music video 1st - it’s stellar. - “Wonderland” - OLV - increíble Saiki vocal performance with a beautiful composition. Take care and rock on 🤘🏼🔥🎤🎸🥁🎼🎶🌎⛩️🇯🇵🙌🏼😎✌🏼
Great reaction and analysis. I like to think of these two songs as bookends of their music; grooving/midtempo classic sounding throwback rock and frenetic, chaotic, speeding to disaster speed rock. This was the first time these two songs were played live (due to the pandemic, the album was released in Jan. 2021). Also, Black Hole had a secret lyricist, the famous British metalhead Stephen Hawkins.
Saw them once live, and was amazed. I really want to see them again, even if I have to travel to Japan. It's sad that due to COVID, they did not get to tour as much with that album, it had a lot of great songs.
You don't know the half of it yet mate...Acoustic concerts, hectic tracks slowed down, Miku learned guitar on the job and now has her own signature model...and now singer Saiki has been learning and debuted piano...on her own at their biggest 10th anniversay gig (as in the Hate video) sang and played slow simple arrangement of 'Choose Me'...captivating the silent huge audience. What a lady 👌❤. The studio MV of 'Choose Me' is worth checking out and my favourite/most played song is 'Dice'...MV for marvellous studio arrangement 💪🔥🤘🤘🤘 Miracle band...how so much talent with perfect temperament came together 👍
Great Breakdown, Band-Maid’s main composer Kanami has a classic music background and uses this influence in her compositions. Each band members contribute to the song and each member challenges themselves so it’s not an ordinary song structure. The more you listen the more you see and appreciate this work! 🤘🕊️🦍🥷👸🏻👀PO!
The woman who does the rhythm guitar and backing vocals (Miku) is the band founder and little ball of energy. She went into the Japan Open Poker Tour in 2022 and was leading the board, although pipped at the end by another player -- she came second. She is not to be underestimated! Miku writes the lyrics. She selected Kanami (lead guitar) who recommended Akane (drummer) who recommended Misa (bassist). Miku also selected Saiki (lead vocals) -- instead of hogging the vocalist position for herself (yes, she sacked herself because her voice is "too bright" for hard rock -- but she does do some great solos, like Sayonakidori and Rock In Me). She took up guitar some time after forming the band, mentored by Kanami (lead guitar and band's composer). Miku is the spokesperson. She does standup comedy ("Omajinai Time") during gigs -- and encourages the others. Miku did a great job building her dream band. She is outstanding -- I think she energises the band with her eccentric brilliance. Band-Maid is five very talented people, but the starting point was Miku.
It's nice to watch someone who can appreciate and talk about what's going on musically. They have never stopped pushing themselves and it's just so awesome to behold.
You haven't heard all of Band-Maid until you have heard all of what Band-Maid has to offer. These two songs probably book end the extremes of the band's song list. I say probably as some songs are totally genre busting, and they have also done a full acoustic set too. In 2014 Kanami (Lead guitar) starts teaching Miku (Backing Vocals) how to play guitar and within 7 years she is playing rhythm guitar to Black Hole- genius. Looking forward to you live compilation. Nice reaction, thanks (UK).
Man, wish I could hire you to explain Band-Maid to some of my clueless friends :) BTW, Miku, back up vocalist and rhythm guitarist, also does most of the lyrics. For example, the lyrics for Black Hole, which indeed are multilevel, both very cosmic and very personal.
Great reaction. You put into words quite eloquently why most of us love Band-Maid so much. If you want to increase your viewers, you may want to check out 3 other bands that have a huge reaction following like Band-Maid. The Warning (Mexico Hard Rock). Lovebites (Japan Thrash/Powe Metal). BabyMetal (Japan Loli Metal). I understand your motivation from watching your live streams, but I'm just saying. Thanks for the 2-hour stream. I'll be there.
This performance is a little muted on the energy of the performance, since it was a live stream during Covid. At the time it was like a gift from heaven. The audience was the camera operators and the crew. This is a band that takes the energy from the audience and multiplies it. I have seen them live and they are amazing. Even when you can't be at the show they live stream 1-2 concerts a year, and somehow each performance seems to outdo the last one.
Don't want to get on *Kanami* -bad- Mincho side when she is composing a song..... 🙂 Don't want to get on *Kanami* good side when she is composing a song..... 🙃 Just enjoy the ride 🤪🍺🤩
I think Kanami is too sweet of a person to have a bad side. She approches everything with the mindset of "I will try my best", which she says quite often.
WARNING! (maybe your next B-M song?) It's bad MANNERS to stop listening to Band-Maid because you'll feel starved for musical excellence and joy and fall into a BLACK HOLE of emptiness... probably! 🤔 Sup SpideyHands! Check out the produced OMV of Manners, if you can. 🕸
Once you've crossed the event horizon, .... um. You're gone, in the most brutal way possible. Hahaha. I'm not sure, but the ladies were able to study certain aspects of objects called "black holes". Huh. It's not easy... But the music somewhere really gave back something of what the ...um. "black hole". The rotating "black hole". Yes, I know. This is just a formulaic, metaphorical, parabola. :D
Great insights. Especially appreciate how you point out the compositional demands of the music absolutely requires exceptional musicianship. Their astounding talent as musicians is so wide-ranging and so deep they leave me in awe every time I listen to them.
Manners is the calming influence to Black Hole's controlled chaos & the equilibrium is restored.🙂
Ahhh, I'm feeling the equilibrium now... 🚬 🍸
Everytime I hear Black Hole I am happily reminded of DocLoco’s comment that it’s like reading Alice In Wonderland in 3 mins.
Haha. I'll have to remind him of that :)

Excellent review and analysis! Thank you! Really. Thank you for giving BandMaid the respect they deserve!
Liked your analysis.

By the way, the rhythm guitarist is the lyricist and also the band founder. 😊
