  • Spider Vs Spider and only one will survive. See the awesome methods a Redback spider uses to capture, kill and eat a Wolf spider. I use time-lapse video to show the way Redback spiders feed. It's all ugly and very scary stuff. This is week 2 of my amazing Redback spider Terrarium thats quite amazing to watch.
RUclipsr Beanmeister22 had the idea for this Terrarium. It's decorated with a CAT Bulldozer toy, Thomas The Tank (Wooden Railway) and Star Wars Millennium Falcon (Hot Wheels Diecast). This Terrarium has garden soil and other garden bugs that were in the compost heap. It's a fun and inexpensive home for the most interesting and deadly pets I have ever had.

The Redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders. The adult female is easily recognised by her spherical black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side of her abdomen and an hourglass-shaped red/orange streak on the underside. Females have a body length of about 10 millimetres (0.4 in), while the male is much smaller, being only 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 in) long. Mainly nocturnal, the female Redback lives in an untidy web in a warm sheltered location, commonly near or inside human residences. It preys on insects, spiders and small vertebrates that become ensnared in its web. It kills its prey by injecting a complex venom through its two fangs when it bites, before wrapping them in silk and sucking out the liquefied insides. Male spiders and spiderlings often live on the periphery of the female spiders' web and steal leftovers. Other species of spider and parasitoid wasps prey on this species. The Redback is one of few arachnids which usually display sexual cannibalism while mating. The sperm is then stored in the spermathecae, organs of the female reproductive tract, and can be used up to two years later to fertilise several clutches of eggs. Each clutch averages 250 eggs and is housed in a round white silken egg sac. The Redback spider has a widespread distribution in Australia, and inadvertent introductions have led to established colonies in New Zealand, Japan, and in greenhouses in Belgium.
The redback is one of the few spider species that can be seriously harmful to humans, and its preferred habitat has led it to being responsible for the large majority of serious spider bites in Australia.

A couple of tricks you might want to bear in mind:
On the lip of the tank, get some baby powder and mix it with some distilled vinegar. With a cotton swab (cue tip) apply it to the lip. About 2cm in height, all around the tank. This will prevent the spiders from getting to the mesh ontop of the tank.
If you want to capture night time lapses, invest in a red light. It will disturb the spiders less when recording their nocturnal habits.

That "stick spider" is actually called an Ogre-faced Spider (or by it's scientific family name, Deinopidae).
They prefer to hang from things (like the ceiling of that cage), and actually make nets from their silk that they hold with their four front legs. When a insect passes below them they will stretch the net over the prey and tangle them up with it.
I should also mention that they have much better night vision than a cat or owls, so that light might be blinding it.
Pretty neat stuff, don't you think?

Thought this was interesting. Great video! ---- Spiders are not miniature vampires; all species, as far as we know, digest some solid parts of their prey. What makes it especially interesting is that the digestion process begins outside the spider, where anyone who wants to look can see how it works. Put a medium-sized insect in the web of a large orbweaving spider in the garden. You will see the spider bite the prey, wrap it in silk, wait for it to die, then begin to eat. As a first step in eating, the spider will literally vomit digestive fluid over the prey. Then the prey is chewed with the "jaws" (chelicerae), and the fluid is sucked back into the mouth together with some liquefied "meat" from the prey. The spider repeats this process as often as necessary to digest, and ingest, all but the inedible hard parts. What is discarded afterwards is a small ball of residue. Spiders other than orbweavers may eat the prey's body but discard some of the wings, legs, etc. Spiders with very small (if strong) jaws (such as crab spiders and cobweb weavers) make small holes in the prey and vomit their digestive fluid into the prey's body, the end result being a hollow shell with some or most of the muscles and internal organs digested and sucked out---- Whoa! -Rod Crawford

The daddy long legs is a definite predator of redbacks, the reason for the long legs is to wrap up redbacks and other venomous spiders without having danger of being bitten while wrapping up the catch. Also that long legged spider is a web casting spider and it will be eaten by the redbacks. The web casting spiders are interesting because they throw a net of webs around their prey

      introduce its webs to fire.
introduce some of its natural predators into its home.
      just introduce it to something.

Spiders licking their feet is a grooming mechanism.
Also, amazing tank dude. Holy shit you have you're own ecosystem. I saw the lady bug feed. Truly amazing stuff you film. Very educational.

The "Stick Spider" in your enclosure is an Ogre-Faced Spider. They have an unusual hunting strategy among spiders... They cast a pre-spun net of silk over prey using their front legs, wrap it up, then feed. They have excellent eyesight, unlike the Redbacks.

i know i'm late to comment on this video and i know you've already tried introducing a whitetail spider in there in week 7 or something like that but if you want to see something kill a redback , then the whitetail is the best bet. The only thing is you'd have to introduce both spiders in a clean container rather than this fully webbed up one .
If the redback doesn't have time to settle down and web up the enclosure , then it's a bit more vulnerable . I've seen whitetail spiders kill web weaving spiders while outside of their webs before and it's amazing to see .They're like lions going straight for the jugular . There is a video somewhere on youtube showing 1 whitetail kill 4 spiders one after the other , all 4 were bigger than the whitetail in size but all 4 were web weaving spiders with no web to call home.
