      A few years ago I watched all the Pixar films in the order they were made and I managed to hold it together during the opening scenes of Up and the ending of Toy Story 3, but this was the scene that finally got to me, I just really love how the film demonstrates that sadness has real value and being sad isn't anything to be ashamed of, it's really beautiful and not the sort of thing you hear in a lot of kids media

    • @mevb
      @mevb 2 месяца назад +4

      Well, it's like it's in the movie, without the other emotions, we can't be truely be happy as we wouldn't see the difference if we were happy all the time. Besides, that's not how life works. We can't always pretend to be happy when we really feel sad or angry on the inside and sometimes you have to let the pressure out to avoid a mental breakdown. Can't be happy when we face a mugger who tries to rob you, holding a gun toward you, neither can you be happy when you're upset at something that is morally wrong or unfair, or pretend that nothing is wrong when you don't feel any happiness.

    Thank you to the editor for pointing out that depression is not sadness. So many people use being depressed to describe being anxious, sad, stressed, afraid, emotionally drained, etc. When those are, in fact, not a form of depression, and it is causing the world to become desensitized to people who actually have clinical depression. Only about 5% of the world is estimated to suffer from depression.

    • @jaysuscrass9119

      disgust is synonymous in function to dissatisfaction- and in tandem with other emotion Disgust pairs with fear and anger to create most nuances of these dissatisfying emotions
      it's an important emotion to understand how it works
      -Fear and disgust together might save you from a dangerous and/or creepy thing.
      -disgust and anger/sadness will push towards action to shift a situation.
      -disgust and joy while polar opposites form repulsion to protect as well
      it's a major point of this movie joy doesn't magically fix things emotionally, negatives must be addressed in order to effect a positive change. She belongs as a character here she's just not a main driver narratively as a character but that's fine she's not a major factor of this story.

  • @MARYWTHER
    @MARYWTHER 2 месяца назад +145

    It's so crazy to me, watching this movie and seeing people hate on Sadness lol. I *hated* Joy at the beginning of the movie (probably because having lived exactly the same thing as Riley at the same age, it really felt to me like someone nagging at me being like "be happy, be happy, be happy dammit!"). She's smothering, pushy, bossy, she keeps forcing joy every time there's no place for it. It really is toxic positivity at its peak, Riley literally forcing herself to keep being positive, which is not a healthy thing to do at all. It's especially obvious when Joy would rather throw away one of Riley's core memories rather than accepting she could ever have a *sad* core memory. This movie shows perfectly just how some people just expect everything to go smoothly and happily, despite it not making sense at all.
    And no, Jen is actually right, without Sadness, Riley does lean towards depression. Depression isn't sadness, depression is being numb and not expressing your feelings, to the point of not even feeling them anymore. Riley repressing her sadness so much is what caused her to shut down, and to feel depressed. And the thing that's interesting is how basically everything about Riley is uprooted (her losing her personality islands). Her identity was linked to the things she knew. Minnesota, hockey with her friends, her friends, her home, etc. All of this has been taken from her, so it's not really her giving up on them, it's her dealing with the loss of all these things. Imaginery world is evolving, because Riley is growing up, yes, but she's also forced to grow up faster, because of all the things she's losing by moving away from everything she's always known. There is an underlying trauma going through Riley's mind, some kind of "shockwave" going around and changing everything. The whole process of metamorphosis Riley is going through in this movie, and how it can go both way, either really bad, or to a rather healthy place, is really well done and interesting.

    When Joy and Sadness are locked out of Headquarters, they get inside because Anger burns away the barrier - and Anger was triggered by Disgust. So maybe Disgust and Anger do have a useful purpose after all. I also like the insight that Joy goes through her own character arc; in some ways Joy is the real protagonist, she matures as Riley does.

    Pixar brought on two world renowned emotional psychology experts for this movie and it really shows. I've heard psychology courses use clips from this movie in their classes because it's so good. That's the most difficult thing of all, taking something complex and explaining it in a simple way. The movie is very good but the behind the scenes work is second to none. Absolute masterclass. Also a really good way for parents to talk to kids about emotions and stuff like that. The idea that we need all our emotions and repressing sadness is actually a really bad thing is the theme and sorely needed in our current society.

  • @demibeans
    @demibeans 2 месяца назад +9

    A lot of people took sadness as depression, but depression actually happens much later when Riley is on the bus. When all the emotions couldn’t control Riley, that feeling of numbness, that’s the depiction of depression. Sadness is just an emotion that helps navigate depression easier and that’s why she’s the one able to remove the “idea” and fix the controls. She helps navigate the feeling through the numbness and then all the feelings are able to come forward because of it. Sadness is not annoying, she was trying to make Riley feel the appropriate emotion that she was supposed to be feeling, what Joy was trying to repress the whole time. If Joy had given her the ability to do so, none of the things in the movie would have happened. Memories would just have been tinged with a bit of sadness and they would have been able to move on eventually. Repression of any singular emotion is the point of the movie. When you try to repress an emotion, especially sadness, you bar yourself from working through that emotion. Instead of learning to feel and deal with the spectrum of what it is to have human emotions, you can end up trying to force joy where it’s not meant to be and eventually those other emotions will leak out with a vengeance. It’s such a fantastic and emotional movie. Every time I watch it, it hits.

      exactly! joy represents toxic positivity through the majority of the movie. and sadness, while it CAN be an aspect of depression, is not what depression is. a lot of people who have never experienced depression don't realize that it's more like the absence of feeling, or feelings in a very limited capacity (because you can still experience happiness while depressed! you can still smile and laugh and have fun, but it's very surface level--best example I've heard and have personally felt multiple times is if someone who was depressed went to a concert for a band they love, and halfway through it's almost like you dissociate, you just suddenly feel like you don't really want to be there anymore and you're ready to go home, even though you were just screaming excitedly minutes ago). you can still get sad/happy, but for the most part depression is numbness, your favorite hobbies aren't fun/exciting anymore, you don't feel like going out, socializing, watching movies, playing games. you just feel aimless and empty. inside out does such a great job portraying things like toxic positivity and depresssion. i am cautiously optimistic for the sequel, which seems to be tackling anxiety judging by the trailer.

      Joy is pur main character as well as our main adversary and it's only when Joy realizes that Sadness isn't the problem but the solution does she finally learn to step out of her own way and achieve her goal and complete her arc.

      yep! there is no villain (reminder that villain and antagonist are not synonyms, all villains are antagonists, but not all antagonists are villains)! this movie is almost entirely internal conflict, with very little external conflict. so there's no villain or even antagonist outside of riley's head. you _could_ say sadness is the antagonist in the beginning (because of how we're presented with everything, she _seems_ like the problem at first), but joy pretty much becomes the antagonist herself by the 3rd quarter, so it could even be argued that she IS the antagonist of the movie. but overall i would say there is no villain/antagonist, just characters that have antagonistic moments. joy is the main character, and she has a really lovely arc/development throughout the movie. it's pretty hard to pull off a story like this, but it was fantastic. wouldn't expect less from pixar :)

    To me, this movie was an extremely powerful experience. As I get older, becoming emotionally attached to movies to the point of being moved to tears just gets harder and harder. I remember I watched this one in pretty bad quality on my smartphone for the first time, and it WRECKED me. I always feel a deep pain and sad feeling not just when Riley opens up or misses her home, but when the Personality Islands break down. It is so well directed and shot that you really get the sense that she is losing a significant part of herself permanently, and it will only get worse if the crisis isn't solved. Makes you ponder what stays with you from childhood to adulthood and what you just can't get back...😢
    It is one of, if not my favourite Pixar movie next to Wall-E when it comes to the overall message, music, animation, characters, humor and storyline. Pete Doctor is just a master of his craft (he also directed Up!)

    I feel like disgust is a pretty primal and important emotion. Seeing something like a rotting dead thing, or spoiled food, or sick looking person and feeling disgusted helps us avoid things that will hurt us. And it can sometimes go haywire in bad ways or not be refined. I think it was a fine choice.

    According to psychologists there are six core emotions: joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust and surprise, so Disgust wasn't really out of place here. Like Joy said "she protects Riley from being posioned, literally and socially". It's more to her than being disgusted of food that doesn't look appealing or knows are gross (like Riley hates broccoli, which I don't like myself but brussel sprouts I hate more and hummus even moreso) but being hyginic, such as in a promo video for wherever Riley should eat a grape that she dropped on the ground or not, or to be socialably accepted (like with Joy suggesting to talk to the cool girls but Disgust decides against it as she doesn't believe Riley being cool enough to socialize with them). Also, Surprise was consindered but he turned out to be too similiar to Fear so he was cut. Originally there would've been several more emotions than those five but there was just too many characters to keep track of so it was narrowed down to the five in the final film to easier follow what's going on.
    Speaking of jealousy and the teenage years, the upcoming Inside Out 2 will focus on Riley becoming a teenager and there'll be new emotions being; Anxeity, Envy (which is jealousy), Ennui (boredom) and Embarresment. According to the official full trailer, it seems the new emotions take over control and throw Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust out of Headquarters, with them trying to get back to take back control. Since we didn't see any other emotions in Mom and Dad's minds or any other characters in the post-credit scene, it can be speculated that either the other emotions disappear from headquarters or that they stay most of the time in background and only come in when they're needed. Personally, since logically there are a lot of boring moments throughout our lives and even in adulthood, we feel anxity from time to time, we feel envy over things even as adults and we do get embarresed over certain stuff, it feels like the direction would lean over to the latter than the former. One thing I speculate about that Fear and Anxeity will either be lovers or best friends as the old saying "fear and anxiety goes hand in hand" (even if those emotions are similiar, they're not the same, fear is what we react to potential dangers, like seeing a rattlesnake, while anxiety is that we are afraid of something that we imaginate MIGHT happen, like we get in trouble at work at think "Oh my god, I'm gonna get fired for this!", though it's not necessary the case) and that they have similiar looks, like Rex and Trixie are in the Toy Story franchise as they came from the same toy line. Wherever I'm right, wrong or partially right remains to be seen and I'm looking foward to it.

    I think what you might have missed is that every person has a leading emotion and that emotion is not just straight forward one. It seems to me that they have some other sides to them.
    So, we saw that Joy is Riley's leader for now. She brings new ideas, positivity even in the toughest situations, playfulness, plans, and hopes for the future.
    Sadness has true compassion and empathy - you see it when she helps out Bing-Bong when he cries - just by listening and helping him through his own grief. What I also liked about Sadness' concept is that you see that the core memories from Minnesota are becoming sad, because those are memories of something Riley has lost. She is grieving. We all have such memories. You obviously still refer to those memories as happy, but now that these moments are gone and cannot be repeated, they go to being so-called bitter-sweet memories.
    And now when Riley is growing up, her emotions and memories are becoming more complex.
    Also, the emotions in the Mother - did you see that her Sadness is leading the group? But that doesn't mean that the Mother is always sad. The mom's Sadness is picking up on the emotions of her daughter and her husband and through compassion and understanding helps to keep the family together.
    The dad's leading emotion is anger. But again, that doesn't mean he is generally an angry, aggressive guy. Anger's other trait, I guess, is the protector, the provider.
    Fear, obviously, has the full panic trait and fright, some planning for the future " just in case ". But as it was said in the beginning, it was to keep Riley safe.
    I'm not so sure about Disgust, though. I think she could have been a trait of Fear, or, just as Jen has said, be the emotion of Pride, or maybe even a healthy-level Selfishness. But there is a possibility that she will eventually evolve into something else or the creators will show us her other traits in the sequel, which is coming out this year!! Woo-hoo!! But so far, I would think that Disgust's role for now is to bring some irony, sarcasm, and humor into the group for now.

    The broccoli pizza is a joke about The Cheese Board in Berkeley, CA. They make one kind of pizza a day, and it's always vegetarian. Pixar headquarters are in Emeryville, not far from Berkeley. Pixar movies often have inside jokes and Easter eggs about local landmarks.

    "Disgust"
    Interesting takes of why Disgust maybe should not be in the main cast, although I wouldn't equal Disgust to Pride or Jealousy (which are some forms of more elaborated disgust towards other people).
    While we don't have all the reasonings why Disgust was left as a character (because in some of the first drafts, there were meant to be around 27 different emotions based on real interpretations of DNA and psychology), "Disgust" is (to an extent) a key element to our survival, despite the social contexts or the more complex meanings of the word (disgut towards people; disgust to situations we don't accept, even if we maybe open to them...).
    Disgust is a feeling of revulsion or strong disapproval that is both innate (linked to instincts we have from our animal side) and social teachings (about what we shouldn't accept, more in line with the objections you made). The thin is this: when we taste something sour unexpectedly, we tend to spit or want to puke (disgust); when we suddenly see something that appears slimy we tend to feel like puking (disgust); when we smell some specific aromas we tend to gag (disgust)... in all those cases, that reaction appears even when we haven't learned the meaning of all those elements (sour flavors may indicate poisonus things, slimy things may be rotten or poisonus, bad smells may indicate poison or rot), but we have the revulsion response imbued in our instincts to enhance our posibilites to survive (becuase we don't want children to overthing if something is poison or not, we want the kid to spit it right away or not even get close to it in the first place).
    That way disgust might be a specialized variant of fear or a secondary answer to it; of course, it can be argued that the expression of revulsion in itself is not fear (you don't have to feel fear to feel revulsion and recognize danger) and that's why Disgust is its own character (we sometimes feel disgust for no reason whatsoever to things that seem completely irrelevant or harmless, like the smell of some perfumes).
    But yeah, that's why Disgust is not comparable (at the level of instincts) to pride or jealousy: recognizing potential personal dangers through strong physical responses is not a trait learned from the group and, certainly, not a choice or a feeling of being superior or wronged by the thing that disgusts us (it's just a strong physical reaction by a primal fear that thing might be dangerous).
    Nice reaction and see you in the next one.

    Speaking as someone who has some issues with depression, this movie encapsulates it perfectly in multiple metaphors. Riley has literally forgotten how to be happy, the happy little girl is fading away, Riley can't feel anything, and particularly when the emotions can't make her change her mind (sorry, that's the best example I've seen of why suicidal people go through with it I've ever seen).
    I use this movie as a cathartic release valve. The more shit I'm dealing with mentally, the more I cry when we get to the third act. Sadness knows what Riley needs even if Sadness can't explain it. She knows Riley needs to feel this in order to move on. She's not able to heal until she faces it

    At one point Pixar identified 27 distinct emotions. But cut it down to keep headquarters from being too crowded, and keep each emotion having a distinct color to make it easy to identify each regardless of actual appearance just for the glimpses into other head quarters.

    I should remember this.
    Depression really is like "Sadness" touching every experience you get and had. But you dont really know which one of them is Piloting right now.
    Thats why "just be happy" doesnt work, cause happy is fighting over angry unaliving in the back over the mainbord. meanwhile sadness is panicking.
    And all your Bases decay and break, while HQ is burning.
    Cinema Therapy is great. Love all their Videos, also did Star Wars :^)

    I think Disgust is a more appropriate "core emotion" for Riley in her adolescence. This movie covers Riley up to age 12. Pride and Jealousy would be more appropriate for her teenage years but I don't feel they'd be core memories of a young child. Inside Out 2 enters her teenage years which also introduces more emotions :)

    disgust is synonymous in function to dissatisfaction- and in tandem with other emotion Disgust pairs with fear and anger to create most nuances of these dissatisfying emotions
    it's an important emotion to understand how it works
    -Fear and disgust together might save you from a dangerous and/or creepy thing.
    -disgust and anger/sadness will push towards action to shift a situation.
    -disgust and joy while polar opposites manifest as repulsion of joy, which protects from engaging with negative situations.
    it's a major point of this movie joy doesn't magically fix things emotionally, negatives must be addressed in order to effect a positive change. She belongs as a core emotion here; she's just not a main driver narratively as a character but that's fine she's just not a major factor of this story.
