  • This presentation provides a broad overview of tissue deposition of gadolinium, focused on the central nervous system. Preclinical studies provide evidence of the pattern and degree of gadolinium deposition across various agents, as well as some evidence regarding potential clinical and behavioral impact. Many clinical imaging studies provide indirect evidence of gadolinium deposition from T1 shortening, which varies substantially across different agents. Newer studies provide early, indirect evidence of washout. A number of clinical studies, predominantly retrospective, have failed to detect neurologic deficits. The syndrome of “Gadolinium Deposition Disease” is discussed, along with future areas for research and clinical management.
David F. Kallmes, M.D., is a Professor of Radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He completed his Fellowship in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at UVA.

I have a scientific background and I can tell you with near certainty that I am suffering from GDD after only one dose of Gadovist. I am fairly young, have normally functioning kidneys, not on any medication and other than the issue I was being scanned for (which was completely ruled out) I had no known health issues. Only a few days after my scan I started developing a host of debilitating symptoms that are common with heavy metal toxicity and that are routinely reported by people who claim to have GDD (new onset headaches, muscle twitching, extremely itchy and burning skin, pins and needles, bone pain, insomnia, among others). The symptoms were completely new, systemic and debilitating and have not resolved even months after the GBCA injection. A 24hr urine test more than 5 weeks after my MRI indicated gadolinium is still being excreted in my urine at a rate 40 times the reference range. It's pretty hard to deny that these symptoms could be connected to the GBCA. There are two main issues with the materials (studies) as they are presented. The first is that they are based on small populations of sheep or rats that have all (presumably) excreted the GBCAs as intended. They don't consider that there may be a 1:5000 or 1:10,000 rat or sheep that for some unknown reason had normally functioning kidneys but does not excrete the GBCA as intended. The gadolinium deposition and therefore toxicity is likely much higher in these people than in the presented cases. The other issue is a very obvious and really sad one - no one is actually talking to or studying people like myself who could be used to possibly prove a causation link between GBCA and GDD in some people. To claim there is no causation when you simply refuse to look is arrogant, ignorant and unscientific. If radiologists and researchers don't look into this issue, the issue will eventually resolve itself as people will simply start refusing the contrast all together. At a minimum informed consent of the patient along with explanation of benefit and risks is needed along with documenting the GBCA and dose received. As a scientist I am somewhat troubled by the arrogant way the material was presented and the equally arrogant nature of some of the comments. It would appear to me that many scientists have lost sight of what it means to be a scientist - to be inquisitive and to search for the truth.

I just found this after RUclips suggested it. David Kallmes moderates. It’s from 2 years ago. My curiosity tweaked by UVA in the Title. It concerns Me that so many unanswered questions leads the panelists to agree it’s safe and it all comes out eventually. No evidence of Harm is Not Proof of Safety.

These guys all represent the greedee industrie. Gadolinium contrast is poison. One injection Prohance in my perfect sporty nonalcoholic, nonsmoking body and it is killing me slowly. Mentally - feeling like a total morron and idiot for allowing and paying for it. Physically - skin allergy like symptoms, jointpain, muscle twitching, muscle wasting, kidney impairment, liver impairment - lets see whats coming next.

@@ia6472 don’t know yet. I am considering it. Nothing available in my country. So will get really expensive. Plus no guarantee that it works. Called them. That’s what they say. No guarantee.

You must always consider bias. "Professional memberships David F. Kallmes, M.D. Radiologist: 2013 Board Member: GE Healthcare's Comparative Effectiveness Research Advisory Board" GE makes Omniscan

Same! 20 yrs MRI’s with gas. Didn’t question until vein blown. Arm swelled 3x the normal size. Hurt so bad, even now 6 yrs later. I wish I had looked into this sooner rather than believe them when they say leaves body 24-48hrs. My 24hr urine came back 814mcg, 5 months after incident. Multihance used on me last 10 yr. Just diagnosed with fibrosing liver with atrophy. 5 years after. Haven’t done gadolinium contrast since. Beware & deny at all cases. I’m sorry you suffered too.

@@mamawolf369 I’m sorry for you as well. My cortex, a CSF tap along with a kidney biopsy show concentrated Gadolinium deposits … very I’ll to say the least
