  • From humble beginnings in Mao's China, Li Cunxin has gone on to have a long and diverse career as an internationally-acclaimed dancer with the Houston Ballet and Australian Ballet. His bestselling memoir Mao's Last Dancer, which was adapted into a 2009 feature film, follows the story of his defection to the West. Today, Li heads the Queensland Ballet as its artistic director, and works to create new opportunities for the next generation of dancers.
Season 4 of Makers Who Inspire focuses upon the experiences of migrant and Asian-Australian creators and was assisted by the South Australian government through Carclew.

I just finished watching Mao's Last Dancer and I am so pleased to find Li happy, successful and teaching future gifted generations of "athletes" how interpret the beauty of Ballet.

Wonderful movie. This man honors his parents, his wife, his children, China, America, Australia, and represents a good example for other men. I was really moved by his strength, love and dance.

What a beautiful artist and human being. His story touched me enormously as I too came from communist country for a visit and stayed in the free world.
I could understand what he was going through and had tears in my eyes watching Mao's Last Dancer and posting it in my ballet groups. The actor and real
Li look so similar, what a great choice it was, he portrayed him so perfectly. One of the best films I have seen in a while.

I watched his movie, read the book. Deeply moved. What a great human-being. Would love to fly to Queensland one day just to watch Li's work.❤️

I like the fact that he is so accepting, so open, accepting of all different cultures. After all, we are all humans, despite different looks, skin colour and culture.

Truly an inspirational and beautiful man. Thank you for your contribution to the beautiful world of Dance, the sacrifices of yourself, and your parents will not have been in vein, they have provided us with a great gift. The pain, associated with loneliness and insecurities of a young student, can crush the aspiring dancer, but most dancers learn how to be very tough and brave, this character shows now with your nurturing, and generosity for your dancers. Queensland Ballet is a beautiful company, truly a representation of It's current Artistic team.
I'm very happy you had good people looking out for you on your journey, as a ballet boy Mum, I understand all too well the stresses you go through being separated from your child, and I cannot imagine what your Mother was feeling, my heart truly breaks each time she packs that bag of precious goodies before you head to school, and when she sees you for the first time at the Ballet, wow, that's powerful, my heart breaks, and bursts with pride all at once, it never fails, I burst into tears.. the same as I did watching my own Son for his debut. I always need to watch the movie alone, it shows me in the raw.
    Thank you ❤

@@AM-zn8wx If you could remember what his memoir says, you would have noted that he would have been refused the freedom of choice to return to the US if he had agreed with the Chinese authority to return to China. The Chinese not only did not recognise his marriage to a US citizen-they kidnapped him and held him in their consulate in hopes of changing his mind about staying in the US. That was why he decided not to return to China.

China is where you get the best training for ballet, Gymnastic,....in Asia , or one of the best in the world. No denying.
You should appreciate that Mao government which gave equality to anyone to be brilliant.
I agree that you choose to stay in U.S for your career as ballet dancer that you hope you could go further , explore new world . And just say so. Nothing else.
