Still processing the closure of my shop just barely a month ago and seeing the final service of Sushi 1 reminded me of how it was the same for us then. Our regulars cried, people sent us gifts, we gave out some stuff around the shop as memorabilias, lots of picture-taking, and they stayed around till we cleaned up for the last time. Watching Musashi's parents reading the dedications reminded me of the joys and pains of keeping up a shop, so much so that I cried until this video ended. Thank you for documenting this. I didn't think I needed this as a way to comfort myself from what I thought was a bad decision. Merry Christmas to all 💚
I was crying the whole time watching this and I wasn't even there, I can't imagine how you both are feeling! Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey with us. Jasmine, you have a real gift for filming and editing in a way that evokes emotion and meaning. well done putting this together!
my first restaurant job was at a tiny sushi place run by a family that became my second family, and last service was so so bittersweet! lots of good food and stories shared, family and friends and every regular coming in to say goodbye. chef let me have the beautiful ceramic sake serving set i always talked about loving, and 10 years later i still have it and it brings such fond memories. to this day he still reaches out on the holidays to check in on me, and the few occasions i’ve been able to go visit the restaurant he works at now he always tries to comp my bill lol thank you for sharing this video, it’s so beautiful & brought back some beautiful memories 🥹
I cried a bit while watching this because Musashi's parents reminded me of my own my parents who risk it all and immigrated to the US. The video was very bittersweet, but at the same time it was heartwarming to see all the dedication and love that went into running Sushi 1 Congratulation to Musashi's parents on a well deserve retirement. Also thank you both for documenting this, it was beautifully shot and edited too well on pulling on my heart strings.
Jasmine it was so touching to see how emotional you are about musashi’s parents and the beautiful tribute you put together for them. As a child of first gen immigrants growing up in a family business, you really captured the bitter sweetness of the whole experience. Thank you
this video was captured so beautifully!! Good Iuck to Musashi (& Jasmine) on the next chapter. Wishing his parents a blissful and healthy retirement (and more sleepovers!).
Beautiful huge part of your parents chapter of their lives and thank you for sharing their story and memories. Although it may be sad, it is an adjustment to their lives to retire and figure out and establish a 'new' routine in their lives- I am so excited for your parents to run free and wild sort of speak with no structure of time - Lol. Wishing them all the best ❤
holyshit. I'm from Queens. i went here many summers as a kid visiting my Aunt and Uncle's small beach house. they retired back to Taiwan, I think it might be a vacation rental now, so we rarely went back. damn... had I known Sushi1 was closing, I would've drove out there to say goodbye. It was such a lovely neighborhood spot. I'm scared to tell my Aunt and Uncle its closed for good 😅. best of luck to Yoko and Kimi. thank you for the full bellies and memories.
Such a beautifully made video you two! I was very touched by all the emotions. It really captured all the love and hard work that Musashis parents have put into making this restaurant a special place. Happy retirement! 💐
Such beautiful homage to the restaurant. Great job capturing the last day and thank you for sharing with us! May Musashi’s parents enjoy their retirement!
Jasmine & Musashi! What a pleasure it was to have ran into y'all at ACRE that morning, and only to realize now after watching this video what an important day it turned out to be for the both of you and Musashi's family. Wishing his parent's a restful retirement!
I cant believe i was crying and i’m not even from America. I have worked in the restaurant world too, also in sushi and I know the feeling when a owner retire. Happy retirement chef. Stay busy and don’t quit!
I remember working the last day at my last job of a restaurant of 15 years. The feeling of my bosses success, seeing the line the last time, the low board full of 86s an signed by all the staff. Every dish was the last I'd make in that space and all the regulars. We drank champagne and celebrated. It's something special to see the finale of a restaurant and how for me at least like musashi also said that next step in our own journeys. Congrats to your parents and the next step for all of you!
The only other comparison for video style and approach that felt this way I can think of is Alvin Zhou. Hopefully someday you can collaborate. No matter the number of views, this was a really great video. Thanks for sharing.
@ 16:27 Musashi casually staring into my soul. Bro would be a great actor. Like a mob boss or some kind of psychopath character holy canoly. Poker face level 89
loved this video. Ioved hearing the stories and seeing all the thought you both put into it, especially the beautiful cake and guest book. happy, restful retirement to Musashi's parents.
I loved this story. Thank you for sharing i grew up with friends with parents owning chinese restaurants and they were sk hard working. Rarely took a break because a break meant closing the restaurant. Retiring is a huge decision and so hapoy for Musashi's parents
Congratulations on such a record and dedication towards delicious food. 29 years is nothing to sneeze at. Wishing you and your parents many blessings. ❤❤❤💐
This was beautiful, thank you so much from Australia for sharing such a profound and important moment with us. Your video had so much life and identity emanating from it, the history here is something worth writing a book about
I also come from a family of immigrants that own a small business. The dishwashing story was very relatable because I also had to help out the family business at a young age. Beautiful 29 years of journey and history, hope your parents enjoy retirement! They deserve it!
Beautifully told story. Congrats to your parents on their retirement and I hope they will be able to take a break, relax, and enjoy themselves. Wishing them nothing but health and happiness always. ❤❤❤
I work for a family owned Italian restaurant, and definitely understand the cycle of customer's lives and how meaningful these spaces can be to the community. We often hear about the ups and downs of people's lives while serving them their favorites. The restaurant I work for will celebrate 30 years next year 🤞 But it isnt fully known what will happen if/when the owners want to retire or something major changes. Really enjoyed this video, and am thinking I may replicate something similar if we close/they retire.
It’s a happy goodbye because this is fulfillment. Nothing was left on the table essentially, being able to close a door rather than having to close one is in my opinion screams success and fulfillment. Musashi’s parents had his support for many years and achieved so much. I feel Mushashi is going to grow and hone his skills, and be as accomplished as the foot prints laid before him as he leaves his own set of foot prints impacting others with his own imprints. Itadakimasu if nobody said it.
May Musashi's parents have a restful retirement ❤ how bittersweet!
