The contrast between the energy and joy of the music and dancing, and the sadness of the man (main character) is overwhelming and powerful! I never saw the movie (Vengo), but I was trying to figure out why the man was so sad. Here is why: Caco is a proud, handsome man, head of a family, and very powerful in the local community. Yet he has been torn to pieces by the death of his beloved daughter. He constantly visits her grave, weeps silently at her photo and has transferred all his wildly protective love and attention onto his physically challenged nephew, Diego.
"The contrast between the energy and joy of the music and dancing, and the sadness of the man (main character) is overwhelming and powerful! " Perfectly described… Thanx
Man you are our saver from the pain of not knowing the truth behind this scene I love the way you described the main character and situation he lives in.
I watched it. Vengo is blood revenge between clans. You have it in Montenegro (vrazba), Albania (kanun), Kosovo (Albanian tribes again) and Scotland. It's eye for eye - tooth for tooth thing. In some cases never stops. A law keeps away from it.. A lot of male children doesn't get out of their houses if blood revenge is on. In this movie, the head of a clan wants to stop it. He's afraid that he'll lose the young man who's sitting next to him and who's hand he's holding. Sad, but good movie.

I remember watching this movie, about the harshness of relationships in Spanish gypsy society. It was a really touching movie. The music is of course incredible. You just wished you were there, singing in these circles! This song's theme fits with the film's plot (though, of course, flamenco lyrics are often improvised and put together more for their rhythmic quality than their coherence): Arrincónamela (Get Her Closer to Me) You will always be my most precious thing Having you is like beautiful things and my love is that of a friend Get her closer to me, corner her in for me, because I want one who is married, but if she is single so much the better Get her closer to me, corner her in for me You called me a criminal because I took that knife away from you I did it for your own good, so you would not end up at the military police station Get her closer to me, corner her in for me, because I want one who is married, but if she is single so much the better Get her closer to me, corner her in for me We don't sell ice here, as they do up there. What we sell here are Chinese oranges Get her closer to me, corner her in for me, because I want one who is married, but if she is single so much the better Get her closer to me, corner her in for me

The director of this movie appears at 1:40 at the left of the screen, the guy with the golden necklace and black shirt; he is Tony Gatlif, a French Roma born in Algeria. I watched this movie in 2001 at Cinema Colisée in Marrakesh, Morocco, during cinema festival organized by the French Cultural Center of Marrakesh, Tony was among the special guests of the festival. After the movie, we enjoyed a musical show animated by these singers and 2 of these lovely ladies (the last two girls sitting on the chairs from the right side). That was in the patio of the Al Mnebhi Museum. The spectacle was fantastic, the guitar guy (the one on the right) was very happy and promised that he will come back again to animate another shows in the future. I still remember too that I thanked the director of the french center, M Vincent Mellili, for having organized that show. That was unforgettably beautiful.

A lot of people saying they are proud of the Latin culture here and you have a right to be, however, this is gypsy culture and flamenco is just one of the famous dances we (the gypsy's) have created. Flamenco was created by the gypsy's in Spain but there are verities of it across Europe. Cardas is a similar dance... So yes it is Latin Gipsy but mainly Gypsy
Los gitanos de Rumania no cantan flamenco ni los de hungria ni los de Bulgaria ni los de ningún lado, el flamenco surgio en andalucia antes de que los gitanos llegaseis.
I am from Southeastern USA and would be classified as African American , however, my entire life I’ve had this crazy obsession with flamenco the music specifically, the folk music and also “gypsy” culture. So obsessed I felt that I had to hide it . I even wrote a story once about a man from Andalusia, even before I knew it was a place. This went on for years then a few years ago our family traced our DNA and boy was I floored when I found Iberian Peninsula on our genetic profile. All this time perhaps I was just tuning into to an ancient part of my DNA. ❤
Didn’t understand a word but loved the music with the song and all the energy with it...enough to believe that some languages are universal no matter where you’re from! :)

What a beautiful way of life! Everyone should live like this, good music, good company......this is the meaning of life!
I remember watching this movie, about the harshness of relationships in Spanish gypsy society. It was a really touching movie. The music is of course incredible. You just wished you were there, singing in these circles! This song's theme fits with the film's plot (though, of course, flamenco lyrics are often improvised and put together more for their rhythmic quality than their coherence):
Arrincónamela (Get Her Closer to Me)
You will always be my most precious thing
Having you is like beautiful things and my love is that of a friend
Get her closer to me, corner her in for me, because I want one who is married, but if she is single so much the better
Get her closer to me, corner her in for me
You called me a criminal because I took that knife away from you
I did it for your own good, so you would not end up at the military police station
Get her closer to me, corner her in for me, because I want one who is married, but if she is single so much the better
Get her closer to me, corner her in for me
We don't sell ice here, as they do up there.
What we sell here are Chinese oranges
Get her closer to me, corner her in for me, because I want one who is married, but if she is single so much the better
Get her closer to me, corner her in for me

That is amazing, this is a beautiful culture.
They know it's Gypsy culture, but Spanish Roma Gypsy culture is also part of Spanish culture now.

La pregunta es, ¿por que se asocia esta música a la tenia gitana?.
Ya que no todaslas personas en Andalucia se identifican como Gitanos

Flamenco rhythms tie my brain in knots, especially the hand clapping.
