I tweeted Lori Petty the other day about The Poker House and she tweeted me back! This film is so amazing! It's very deep but it is totally worth a watch! I'm a massive fan of Jennifer Lawrence and this was one of her best roles! :D
Completely agree, and it was her first lead. I have always said she should have gotten at least an Oscar Nom for The Poker House. And anyone who read Winter's Bone will tell you, she WAS Ree Dolly so perfectly she deserved an Oscar for Winter's Bone.
My first viewing of this film, disturbed me tremendiously. I could sympathize with her shooting both the mother and boyfriend (pimp). I feel a lot of respect for her choice. Her strength was outstanding. Having found out at the end that this story reflected Lori Pettys life as a child, was shocking..and having watched her movies early on she always had a special place in my actors list. She dazzled me in her role with Patrick Swazy, Keane Reeves in the movie Point Break. And Free Willy. Kudos to you for your courage to go on and stive to over come with dignity,.
Perhaps you have some misconceptions about rape. Rape is, actually, a violent act that can cause severe internal damage. Did you not notice the blood? It's hard for men to conceive of the pain involved because their anatomy is completely different.
Thank you Stephanie. I was able to write directing to Lori Petty. She responded quickly. Unfortunately, I've experienced similar situations. Yes, rape is about violence and domination and more. Some rapists are so adrenaline fueled they don't feel the physical pain until later. I was the only woman who got away and hurt my would-be rapist. The first question I was asked by the police: "What were you wearing"? This was in 1999 in Baltimore, County.
Selma Blair played her mother and did an amazing job. Actually, I think her part was more difficult than Jennifer's. Great move. Tragic. I loved the scene near the end when the sisters were singing to an 8-track and it stopped, like 8-tracks always did.
It was. Not beat her til she's dead violent. But he forced himself inside of her as she screamed and thrashed around. That is the definition of violence.
Lori Petty. Remember her as an actress. Nice to see her directing. I like her honesty and directness with the interviewer. Maybe I'll investigate her films with more interest.
Over the last month I've seen Silver Linings Playbook & snippets of other films she's done, along with many, many interviews. This girl is amazing in every sense of the word. I'm sure many are impressed by her external beauty, & of course that makes sense, but she's so natural and enthralling when she speaks & acts that I hardly notice her external appearance anymore. Hollywood is a narcissistic place that's dehumanizing. Amidst all that, this girl is a great breath of fresh air & positivity.
Lori Petty, thanks for sharing ur brace story n ur resiliance.. We ALL need to be brave n compassive so this kind of abuse will end... Love Jenn too :)
I love Lori Petty. We need more women in Hollywood like that. Unconventional beauties not the same - and no disrespect to Jennifer Lawrence intended - old blonde girls who all blend together.
i saw this movie and i was so moved first of all because im basicly like agnus that is pretty much my life just modern day and i actually believed her that she was this girl forced to grow up to soon forced to find out just how cruel the world is and just how much life sucks we are just alike but thats not a good thing and those of you who have seen the movie know that :(
Just watched the film, not too bad I guess, rather tragic story, as a fan of Lori's movies I had no idea this was her child hood, the feelings you get watching this are very real and upsetting,I looove JLawrence but sadly I never want to watch a Woodbine movie again.
Last, but not least, male anatomy isn't all that different from the female one, we are two sides of a coin in the same species. The human being also takes pride in its ability to understand and create, which roughly translates into imagine, the ability to grasp things we don't precisely get because they don't exist, or we haven't seen/experienced them yet. And believe me, some of us males know the specific pain we're talking about here. Rape victims aren't exclusively female.
Oh, and when I said the bathtub scene (right after the rape scene) was more violent, I made a clear mistake, sorry about that. From 15 to 16, big changes, I definitely see that now.
I absolutely love Jennifer. She's such an amazing actress and she's doing very well. The Poker House was a very touching movie and very moving. The only part that was harder to watch was when she was being rapped... other than that the movie was just out Of this world and I jut love Jennifer Lawrence all together(; but yet again.. Dost everybody?(;
Lol wow. Nice. "I was born in the 90s!" Sums it up perfectly! Haha wow. Thought she would mention she came along much later! Didn't know this was based on a true story! Wow.
Jennifer looks good and shes wearing white and you know that when you wear white it makes you look bigger then you really are. But she looks good in white.
Nowhere in Lori Petty's biography does it say anything about Council Bluffs Iowa or that she played basketball. Born in Chattanooga Tennessee, graduated from North High School in Sioux City, Iowa where she worked on the school newspaper. Her Father was a Pentecostal Minister but there is no record of her mother working as a prostitute or of her being raped by her Mother's black pimp. Her sisters also refuse to comment on any of what Petty asserts as the facts of her life. Based on true events? Sounds made up to me...

Lauren Bramley I watched years ago and totally is the best movie of Jennifer ever made.
Completely agree, and it was her first lead. I have always said she should have gotten at least an Oscar Nom for The Poker House. And anyone who read Winter's Bone will tell you, she WAS Ree Dolly so perfectly she deserved an Oscar for Winter's Bone.
I’m a massive fan of Jennifer Lawrence too man

Lori Petty shot down the interviewer's stereotypes real fast
Sure did. I thought I was the only one who caught that
immediately! And you can tell it's coming from her tone, I love it
@Aaron R Espinoza I wrote that 6 years ago lmao
@Aaron R Espinoza 🤣 all good
so this is based on Lori Petty's early life?? This is traumatizing :o How was she able to write/relive those days of misery? :(
I write for a substitute of tears.
fab4--yes, amazing she came through all that. Strong lady.
Her mother did become a recovering addict later.

I cannot get over Lori's eyes...what a traumatic experience, poor thing. She is stunning.

"Poker House" was loosely based on Lori's own experiences of violation in her youth.

I swear when i saw this movie, i couldn't hold back my tears. it was just... its terrible how that happens to people.
It was. Not beat her til she's dead violent. But he forced himself inside of her as she screamed and thrashed around. That is the definition of violence.
Remember Tank Girl... I would have never guessed this happened to her. She seems so well adjusted.
I thought that was tank girl from her voice and short hair🤔
i met Lori in Omaha when she was doing graphic work. She was all over the board. Good for here she did something.
How many times have you heard people say Jennifer carries the movie? Such an amazing actress!!
Lori Petty. Remember her as an actress. Nice to see her directing. I like her honesty and directness with the interviewer. Maybe I'll investigate her films with more interest.
"I was born in the 90s, ok?!" Gosh, you've got to love Jennifer.
Lori's voice -- still so pure and feminine!
i did and its only likke 1 minute long but i LOVED the end wen her and her sisters were in the car singing!
