The nostalgia I have of this game. I remember when I first got it and like I had no idea what I was doing, took me probably a few months on and off of messing around just to beat one of the levels. Granted, I got this game when I was like eight years old.
Yeah, it was definitely not an easy game for a kid to play. I was stuck on the 3rd level for a few years as a kid because I had no clue what to do lol.
Yeah, I was the same. I had the game as a kid as well and the game design was pretty confusing but that's what made it different from other third person games on the n64.

But yeah without having some form of guide, beating it vanilla seems really hard, and even then it's trial and error I'd imagine.

I remember looking up secrets for a Ps1 game called Driver 2 back in the early days of the internet and the majority of the content I found was made up. Lol... I guess most of it was user edited. I believe the website was called Cheat Code Central. Not sure if it's still around these days... But yeah, in the early days we didn't have walkthroughs and things like that unless you had a pc. I remember trying to beat that one running guy in a race in ocarina of time. I tried over and over again for hours and days I'm sure to no avail. Later I discovered he's unbeatable.... All that wasted time! Lol

It's funny you mention that horse race in Ocarina, I remember that as well before I knew you were supposed to jump the fence and escape, I was like trying to find I think a gameshark cheat for unlimited carrots (only to find it wouldn't help) but in the process of doing that I found out there was supposedly a golden, winged Epona, that you had to have the gold cartridge of the game for (I didn't, sadly, making me think I was missing out but it didn't exist to begin with!) Another instance of a similar thing that may or may not be true, actually, there were supposedly some GameShark codes you could put in for GoldenEye that actually allowed you to go visit the island in the very first level, Dam. I forget, basically there was supposed to be a boat or something you could take over there. Maybe I was just younger but video games just had a certain magic to them back then. EDIT: Also I loved the DRIVER series of games. For some reason I thought that was PS2 but now I am thinking about the classic library of PS1 games again. My friend had the PS1, I had the N64, that's how we kind of were able to play games from both worlds. I remember beating MGS1 final boss for him. Good times.
I love that the music in the embassy is so dynamic, like you go in the main lobby/piano area and it is the score being played for the audience by the piano player, but as you get further away from the area it subsides and reveals the theme is still being played but more as an ambience and without the piano at all. The N64's audio capabilities were one of the things that arguably held it back especially in an era where PS1 games actually had what they needed to show video quality images and also achieve the same level of definition with the sound. THAT era of games was so different, it was still a debate as to whether "cartridge based games" or "CD/DVD based games" were the future. Miyamoto who is arguably the most important Nintendo personality that ever lived was a LATE convert to the disc thing, believing cartridges were superior until the Gamecube came out basically.
One reason why I still play N64 nowadays: No loading screens. Try for example Skyrim on PS3 - it is hell. You have to watch more loading scenes than anything else. But you're absolutely right, the N64 was inferior concerning to video scenes and sound files.

Dialogue for video games was often extremely funny, often on purpose, in the 90's. Like the Command and Conquer videos are campy and corny and hilarious on purpose. It was just the style back then.
Same, when I was a kid and like 7-9 years old, I couldn't figure out what to do man. Prolly wasn't until I was close to 10 that I somehow beat the level. It's a tough one and really trial-and-error-y
I cant get past the computer terminal . when i reach to the botton, on my way down but i cant reach the card slot .at that moment which button shall i press? .now i know i hold down the button Z and Right then i swing back and forth to slide the card reader .
An absolute classic and very challenging game! The embassy level was iconic for me - great music and it was just an enjoyable mission to play out. Not the most polished of games but it captured the TV series and movie well.

It’s funny how when your a kid you don’t realize it’s a bad game. It didn’t occur to me . As a kid, I thought the movie was awesome and anything spy related (especially Bond) was awesome. So of course this game is too. Ignorance is bliss. Haha
I remember waiting for this game to come out back in the day, both EGM and Gamepro as well as Nintendo Power magazines would show very realistic looking screen shots of the game and some of those screen shots were of course certain parts of the game, and there were some that weren’t. After playing Goldeneye for a year and having a blast with it, many of us that enjoyed the spy experience, were so hyped for this game. Sadly the game would get pushed back constantly from it’s original release date and every month in one of the aforementioned magazines, we would see a new screen shot or weapon of some sort to hype us up more and the developers would tell the magazines for everyone to just be patient and they were sorry, but they just wanted to give us the most realistic and bad ass experience as a spy, and the game would be out soon, only to be delayed again. Until finally, we got our release date, and the game comes out, and fans immediately didn’t like it because they waited very long for this and once they got their hands on it, they felt the game was half assed, glitchy, broken, ugly, very short, very difficult and very stupidly boring. When I first got it, I actually liked it and had a good time playing it, especially since there was some connection to the first movie with Tom Cruise, there was a lot of things from the movie in the game and I loved that because I am a fan of the movie franchise. I think the game was ahead of it’s time and I understand where the developers were coming from, they tried their hardest to give us an authentic spy experience and they were pretty damn close in my opinion.
I think I had heard something about the entire team being booted out and a brand new team came in to start over, or at least partway through to continue the game. I still enjoyed the game as a kid, but I can see how back then how bad it was lol.

Did you know that you could use the empty handgun in the CIA escape mission? Even thou empty you point it at that dudes head in the office and he'll open the final gate for you.
PS1 version had some woeful extra dialogue and the visuals looked more cartoon without the 'haze' the 64 version had. Also the music was different in a few places including the embassy level and it just didn't fit.
This game was good that you didn't have to shoot everyone. But the graphics and handling were poor and no multiplayer like Goldeneye. I'd give Goldeneye 9.5 and this a 7.5.
i used to wake up in the night sweating screaming at ''i think i singed my hair'' i spent a year on the first level. none of my friends could help coz they all got goldeneye
you know you can punch the guys at the end level ( credit level ) but then can kill you with like 3 punches. as a kid i tried to kill all of them xD but it was super hard back then cause you would have no save state no nothing if they kill you you have to play the last level again to try it :D
You can try to find a rom of it for the N64. Might be a bit difficult since Nintendo forced all the major rom sites to take down roms for Nintendo systems a few years ago. ...that or buy it on ebay used for $10.

As a kid with no Internet or way to buy guides this was THE MOST FRUSTRATING GAME EVER! it was so damn hard to figure out what to do it gave you very little direction and was so annoying. I dunno which is worse this or the star wars shadows of the empire. They both suk balls. It was like a whole different console going from this crap to Goldeneye and perfect dark.

Hey man, some of these levels made me toss my controller in utter rage and frustration. Or they were so hard that I'd have to take a ton of damage (like the Station or Ice Storm levels) and I wasn't about to sit there and perfect run everything haha. Sorry to disappoint in that regard lmao

I didn’t know people would actually watch this haha. And I think the health carries over between levels because if you complete all sections of a mission without dying, the game will give you a cheat code as a reward generally.
