  • The Allen test can be done to determine if your hand's blood flow is normal. Generally, this is done in preparation for a procedure that could impair blood flow in the radial or ulnar artery. The health professional drawing your blood will apply pressure to the arteries in your wrist for several seconds during the Allen test. The blood flow to your hand will be halted, and your hand will turn cool and pale until the ulnar artery blood flow is restored and evaluated. In this video, Dr. Marcelo Guimaraes performs a live demonstration of the Allen Test and explains how it is used to evaluate a potential radial candidate and collateral circulation of the hand.
