Just found this video and LOVE to see a Dr. who lifts weights! I've been lifting for 25 years and am experiencing this same type of pain. Many thanks for your service in doing this video for us!
After my fall from motorbikes, I have a wrist pain and TFCC tears, I consult couple specialized dotors which cost me 100 euros for 10 minutes taping on his computer and I cannot ask any questions about my pain. But your 5 minutes of videos may explain my problem. Thanks for sharing !
Comment from a guitar player! Thank you for this great video. I have this issue currently in my strumming hand for the guitar. I was shocked by the absolutely incredible pain that I had for two days which basically immobilized my hand, but then quickly went away to a large degree. My physician diagnosed this issue EXACTLY the way that you did. I found your MRI image and your drawings extremely helpful in further describing the condition. I am in the process of rest and getting back into playing (and other activities) slowly and with common sense in terms of duration of play, etc. etc. I'll also be looking into a proper brace that helps my right, strumming hand maintain proper positioning and extension. Thanks again!
I have issues with this type of tendon strain aswell, be it around the elbows from the gym. But especially from the guitar. I gave myself awful tight forearms and inflamed tendons like discussed here, from trying to keep up with James Hetfield from Metallica's playing! Not practicing properly to the right, slower metronome beat to build up the pace and relaxation of the arms when practicing. I went back to the start, and have eliminated most of the pain asfar as the guitar is concerned.
Take care of your fretting hand as well!. I hurt my pinky 😭 in 2 weeks of exercises until it developed trigger symptom... Now I completely stopped practice in hope to cure it.
I was diagnosed with ECU Tendinitis in March and I received about 6 cortisone injections over a 10 month period. I use the ice on my wrist but I am still in alot of pain. Thank you for this video, I feel relief to know that I am not crazy. Because sometimes you feel like your going through pain episodes alone. So to see a Dr. discuss your issues gives me relief.
That is a ridiculous amount of cortisone shots; one shouldn’t have anymore than 3 in a year! They cause tissue damage &/or tendon rupture. Better to try PRP & certainly hope rehab has been in place the entire time. No shot is a fix.
Wow, litteraly have been dealing with this for ever and i can fairly say i know alot more about ECU tendonitis than most doctors do. Very informative and put together really well, youtube needs more truthful content like this!! Thank you

I once went to the doctors when I first did it but they didn't know what it was and neither did I but I knew it wasn't normal. They didn't do anything and it's been like 5 years or something. @@chandnisaifi5063 I had a surgery and it actually made it worse, i'm currently in the middle of trying to see them again for another one. Try and ask a doctor to refer you to a specialist, like an orthopedic, if they're any good they will recognise it instantly like the one I went to did. Since it's a rare injury the average doctor won't pick up on it so I really do suggest pushing to see a specialist for this reason. I hope you're able to fix it.

Have played a lot of tennis and squash my whole life and have been lifting weight for the last ~8 years. For the last couple years my wrist pain varies from almost non-existsant to non-bearable. Have tried many things but nothing seems to help except play less squash and tennis :( Also avoiding some exercises in the gym. I have no expertese but I think I have the second option (from the three that you showed). Have tried different different braces but haven't tried the wrist widget yet. None of other braces helped at all but well I will give this one a shot aswell. When I went to the specialist he just told me to not play tennis or squash..
Hello. I'm from Latin America. I have the same condition. (extensor carpi ulnaris subluxation) mine was a little more advanced, the tendon jumped outward, and I had to stop working to get it back into place, it took 8 months, that's right, and it was horrible. And I had to rehabilitate myself, because the doctors only told me to rest. It is best to stop activities, where you continually use your hands, and do small exercises for your hands (tendinitis). There are many videos, also use heated towels, use buckets wrapped in towels. Use wrist support and a good diet. I can't find videos in Spanish where they diagnose these cases.
I use hammers a lot at work, hitting metal repeatedly and I also work out with lots of movement around my wrists to strenghten these parts. I had real bad pain whenever I move my right wrist in certain ways for the past couple days and this explains exactly what I feel! Thank you for this informative video, I'll rest my hand for a while as much as I can.
Thank you a lot for this. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. I recently had this happen boxing and was wondering what the heck was going on. Now I know and will seek treatment. I wish your office was in Vegas.
Thank you so much for helping me understand my pain. I arm wrestle and have terrible pain in that exact area when i supinate. I will give it rest and use the brace you suggested. Again thank you good sir
This super niched video is very helpful. I have tendinosis in this tendon and a 1mm tfcc tear. Not sure if it’s from computer gaming, boxing, pull-ups / pushups, or tattooing for a living. It may be a combination of all of them. But it’s a real pain in the ass of an injury that nags all the time and this really helped me to understand what’s going on beyond the explanation given by the doctor that examined my mri results. The tendon coming out of that groove when I supinate and pronate explains why I’ve had that clicking in the wrist for years. Thanks for putting this up with such a clear explanation. I have the wrist widget already and was wondering if I am doing the right things to help it recover on its own before considering surgery if it persists.
The tfcc tear wasn’t the primary source of my pain. It was tendenosis in both wrists. Most likely from overtraining on a heavy bag. Sometimes I would do 6 rounds back to back. I had my hands wrapped properly and have pretty good technique. But between training at home on my bag and 3 or 4 times a week at the gym, I over did it. Ended up getting steroid injections in both wrists. My wrists feel better at rest now but get sore if I do certain exercises. I’m slowly rehabilitating. I think my boxing training might be over or somewhat limited at the least. Haven’t trained in 10 months. It sucks. I’m getting back into weights now and feel like a stiff, telegraphing fat ass. Rip.
@@AlexMartinez-oq8xu read above comment. The thing that helped me the most was massaging the tendon near the ulna perpendicular to the forearm. Like across it rather than along it if that makes sense. With tendonosis the fibers heal all spaghetti like, and massaging helps to break up the scar tissue that stiffens all that up and it helps it heal more normally when u do that as far as I’ve experienced. Hope that helps 🥊
I dislocated my ECU tendon and have a tear in the sheath.. It took me a year to get a proper MRI done and now almost a year for an appointment with a Hand and Upper Limb clinic doctor.. beyond frustrating. It's almost always sore, and when I am at the gym it's basically all I think about when doing upper body exercises. Besides surgery, is there anything you can recommend to strengthen this at all and what exactly are these injections ? I wear wrist straps very tight and only curl with an ez curl bar but still am always sore, it has 100% hindered my life for the past two years. Edit : I wish I found this video earlier. You literally described EXACTLY what I did.
I noticed the snapping every second while I was crocheting. I’ve never noticed my wrist snap so much before. Thanks for this super helpful video, I just bought the wrist widget and hopefully it helps!
Thanks for this video, Dr... It was very helpful. In my case, i dont feel pain unless my tendon pull out of the ulna's tear. I believe if i use this wrist widget, it will stop and i could work normally again! In Brazil we dont have any video like this
Great video. Woke up one morning after working arms to wrist pain. After several weeks it was still there so decided to splint it and rest. Much better
Ten years ago when this problem was bothering me a hand surgeon gave me a steroid injection without ultrasound guidance. It sure helped. The problem went away. But it's back again. The ulnar nerve is somewhere in that area. I wonder how risky it is to do an injection without ultrasound.
On the money. I’m a right handed golfer that also does a lot of straight bar curls and reverse hammer curls. Every once in a while one of those activities pinches my wrist so hard I can barely pick up 10 lbs. Usually a few days rest and Advil makes it go away .. only to return if I over do it again or hit an iron shot fat.
I think this is what I have too.. my right wrist felt like a sprain for months and it still bothers me, and now my left wrist bothers me this way. It hasn’t stopped for you yet??
@@niyaathul8131 turns out my sprain was a tfcc tear and my left wrist was just tendonitis. I fixed my tendonitis with @ the tendonitis expert on RUclips, check out his channel. I still struggle with TFCC pain though
What about the FCU? My pain is on the elbow. It flares up sometimes if I do a heavy pull day at the gym. I take 10 days off with ice and it goes away for a few months. This is going on for years.
My pain started with the wrist while using my driver in golf and moved up my arm. Wrist, lower arm side of elbow, tricep side of elbow and then shoulder. My physical therapist started me with light stretching, and eventually progressed to some light strength training. Be patient and don't do too much early on. I would see a good physical therapist
@@kurtg9684 I have fixed mine with stretching the flexors. Also I do strengthening of the flexors and extensors. But I feel like the stretching was what have eliminated my 20 yo pain.
great info but i disagree with the part about stopping use and resting. instead getting bloodflow to the tendon by doing high repetition very low resistance movements daily will allow the tendon to heal. resting it and never using it will restrict bloodflow and ability to heal naturally
Tennis player here. Guess I'm just another stat 🤣. This comes from my 2 handed backhand. At the bottom of the stroke, my hand is fully supinated. That's where the pain is. You motioned like it was the 1 handed backhands that might aggravate the injury, but not quite 😜.
Interesting. I was born with some sort of defect on both wrists. Ever since I was born, whenever I supinate my wrists I the tendon would slide or pop over the bone. It doesn't cause any issues in daily activities since I was born like this, but if I over do any exercises it starts to get a little bothersome. Now that I've progressed to the point where I'm trying to do extreme movements for planche training, it's really become a bother.
Thanks very helpful! I’m having an MRI scan tomorrow because my consultant thought I might have damaged this and a few other tendons in my wrist. I’ve been playing the clarinet since i was about 8 or 9 (now 15) and I’ve been having pains in my wrist for like the past year or 2 now but only just realised it could be something like this. Hurts whenever I write or play now so hopefully it can be treated ASAP :( Edit: it’s is this :( I’ve worn the tissue away and am getting a splint fitted soon if it doesn’t mend itself I have to have an operation
@@abhikdebnath876 I’m having it some time between May and September. The hand surgeon I saw a couple of days ago wants it done and healed before I got to collage because I’m studying Music further and it won’t be much help if I can’t play anything 😂

nice explanation doc. Could lift a very heavy load(hand in supination, fingers open) just once injury the tendon? Its more possible to be an tfcc injury? The most of my pain is in supination.
I had tennis and golfers elbow with ulnar surgery. Now my nerve in inside of elbow is super sensitive and I can not use a mouse or keyboard without pain to wrist to elbow. Plus I just had major surgery for a ruptured rotator cuff

Hi. Thanks for the video. If you resume activity during the healing process, does this set you back in the healing process? If yes, then by how many weeks?
I injured my left hand 10 years ago, while i was doing chest with dumbbells i twisted my wrist and felt a lot of pain... i stopped working out for some months and avoided heavy weights. Everything was of, no broken wrist... but after some years i stared to work out heavy with a z bar and felt the paint again while doing the same movement you demonstrate. Now i cant even hold an olympic bar or catch a fast ball in baseball without feeling pain in my left hand :( i hope i dont need surgery after so many years
Thanks ver much dr , you helped me a lot understand my pain , but I have ECU tenosynovitis since a year , is heat is useful in my case? And does the wrist brace will be useful?
I've been using a splint and ice it twice a day. Anti inflammatory gave me horrible tinnitus so had to stop those. Tried collagen powder but it upset my stomach. I stopped playing violin, doing weights, knitting. I'll be teaching ASL for 7 hours a day, five days a week starting next month so I need this better! It's still painful. Yes, I do sleep with the hard brace on. Yes, I've been to the doctor who said it was tendonitis (he prescribed the anti inflammatory). This has been over a month now (I'm sure it was all the violin playing during strings camp). Any other advice?
what is the name of the area were you have red in this video. I hurt the arm hitting a heavy bag. Been looking for a home remedy to heal the area preciously were you have the red mark on your arm.My wrists are fine. Any suggestions please. Thank you very much. Skip
I'm trying to figure out why I have this sudden pain... went to sleep and then woke up the next morning with a weird wrist pain when I moved it a certain way. And why I apply pressure it's a painful soothing feeling. Day 3 when I would squeeze I heart crunching noises today is day 6 and it's sore pain is not as bad but I also have a high tolerance so I might have gotten used to it. But when I move my hand in a certain direction or try to lift something I definitely feel my weakness in that wrist.
I think I have a problem that cause my tendon to hurt. I punched someone while moving my wrist over to the left with my right hand and instant felt pain on my tendon ( big ball on your wrist) and felt it to the other side of my wrist below. It was 2-3 years ago and idk what to do
goalkeeper from soccer here, i think i overtrained myself (i train 2-3 times a day) and it manifested into this intense wrist pain I felt after a training that basically left my wrist immobile for 3 days. now, i’ve rested about a week and I was wondering if (assuming i feel little to no pain now) it would be safe to continue training with tape around the wrist for stability? thank you!
Please help. Did anyone on here have ECU subluxation or snapping over the ulna bone and actually fix it with conservative treatment? If so, what worked to actually make the tendon stop getting jammed over the ulna bone? Was it wearing the wrist widget for a couple months straight, PRP, rest for 2 years, splinting for 2 months, physical therapy, strengthening, stretching, massaging, etc.? Any feedback would be appreciated. And yes I've been going to multiple specialist doctors but nobody has the answer. I tried resting, splinting for 4 weeks (but it was in the wrong position ulnar deviated, didn't know at the time), wrist exercises, and nothing has worked yet. I had MRI and it didn't show anything in the results relating to a subsheath tear or anything. Surgical options don't seem great.
I do believe I had this. All the information you gave adds up. One question though, so when my wrist got injured, the bone that sticks out on the outer side actually started sticking out a lot more. Is there an explanation for this?
i have it in left side on left hand from controller games years ago but its only in the palm muscles on pinky side the wrist pain is very sligh in comparision making it hard to use keyboard with left hand a bit scared for sure hope its treatable
I've been diagnosed with Extensor carpi ulnaris tendinosis, not tendonitis. Have you got any tips on treating this. It's been hurting on and off for years so I'm assuming it hasn't been caught early. Does that make any difference to the treatment?
@@Rocketos I was told to rest it and then strengthen it. In the past I got a wrist splint with the metal plate inside. What I used to do is wear it when it starts hurting and then take it off when it stops hurting. Decided to wear it more or less everyday even after it stopped hurting for another few weeks and that seemed to have helped a lot in the longer run. And after that period, I got myself a few resistance bands and an adjustable power grip exerciser. And slowly working my way up with them things. Still can be sore every now and then but been much better than the last few years. Just remember to wear the splint on anything strenuous you'll do
@@Rocketos main thing that made the difference for me was wearing the splint for a few weeks longer than you think is necessary. My forearm, wrist, and hand muscles on both arms have experienced significant wasting, while the rest of my body has seemed to remain normal. I play a lot of Golf and do a lot of typing at work. The seemingly most affected muscle is this one. The top of the wrist has basically gone down to the bone and the outside muscle of the forearm (left side of left forearm) looks almost concave. The weird thing is I can still do basically all my daily activities like typing and playing guitar without much pain at all. To any experts on this matter does it sound like an injury related condition or maybe something else?
@@lostprophet69420 that's what I still lean towards, but I never experienced any kind of pain after the initial period where I lost my muscle mass. All the doctors I've seen about it have basically said "go to the gym lol." Meanwhile I'm at the heaviest weight I've ever been with a low body fat %. So I don't think it has anything to do with fitness.
Hi. So I'll be honest, I had banged my wrist on an iron railing for some reasons a few months ago(5 exactly). My wrist swole and it had pain but that swelling and pain subsided in a week. Now again since last 2.5 months, this pain triggers every 2-3 days. I visited a clinic and the Dr wrote a lengthy prescription and suggested to wear a wrist brace. I did that religiously but its been nearly 1.5 months again, this pain is all time intense. Is it possible to get rid of this pain without getting the injection ? Please suggest 🙏 Warm regards - Lovely, India
When the tendon tears can it cause a limp? I have Ehlers danlos and my doctor thought I had a cyst there but I have pain up that part of my arm and now it’s going into my shoulder… and now the other side of the wrist is hurting too! Like it wasn’t hurting too bad but now I can’t lift my pillow or hold my phone at all. Before just my two end fingers were going numb and I had pain up that side of my arm. It all changed last night.
I forgot to add they tried to look at it with a scan at the same time remove fluid but none came out.. so they just injected me with the steroid to see if it would help but it just make things worse.

had a fight with a lawnmower.. backfired while pulling cord, it pulled me instead.. messed my ecu up.. feels alittle better after 3 days.. but when it jumps over the bone it hurts. My question is will it heal?
I'm wondering the same thing, I've had it for 8 months. Doesn't hurt has much as it did before, but it still hurts. Splinting did nothing to help, just made it stiffer and weaker. Strengthening and stretching seems to help a bit, but the tendon still clicks over the bone when I do palm up and ulnar deviation. And palm up and wrist extension as well. Any knowledge would be appreciated
how long do you think someone should wait after ECU tendonitis/subluxation before they can return to tennis? I had my injury on feb 27, 2020 and as of may 29 i can supinate and pronate with no pain, however, there is a very slight pain when i play tennis, which usually goes away after taking a break.
@@bamboola09 well its been a long time and i can say im about 100% healed. Some things I'd recommend is to wear a cast where your wrist deviates to the radial side so your pinky and ulna are almost making a straight line (see this pic if you're confused: www.dacbaseball.com/wpcontent/uploads/2019/01/ulnar-and-radial-deviation.jpg ). Another thing I'd say is to invest in a Wrist Widget. If you've been struggling with ECU Subluxation I bet you've come across this item across the internet but it really works. It keeps your TFCC intact while also holding the ECU tendon in place allowing for healing. Icing the area also helps as well after physical activity. Whereas stretches go you could try isometric band stretches with your fingers and affected hand with rubber bands to allow more blood flow to the torn ecu subsheath and more healing. Id say you should do Isometric strengthening after substantially healing (being able to supinate and pronate with no pain or "popping"). Even after all this, the key to getting your wrist back is patience. An ECU subsheath tear sucks to have and takes well up to 6 months for your wrist strength to return. I wish the best for you and your recovery man. You're gonna make it.
Where are you ? Finding real PT, and doctors to actually help you heal is very hard. They want you to put a ball on wall, and you know the bullshit. I’m in OC Calif,
It is the exact problem i have in my wrist! Due to playing squash , it's been four months and it has healed 90% butit has stopped their for 1 month , how much time does it usually take? Pls respond
Yah, the triangular set of bones on the ulnar side pf your wrist is a killer w/ dumbell pull overs (for upper back), straight bar bicep curls, 1-arm tricep extensions (behind your head), even bicep curls when you dumbell supinate. I had one set of steroids shots already. Wrist wraps help a little. When you ego lift, you end up lifting a miniscule weight. Kind of embarrassing. Lol
Hello im currently having this issue so im keeping my wrist in a brace for the next 4 to 6 weeks but i was wondering if i could play games on controller during this healing process
@@Bandana928 after the 6 week bracing which i had actually cut at 4 weeks because i was feeling really good. I started doing light wrist strengthening exercises for 2 weeks then started adding mobility exercises on top of it and as of today i do not have that issue anywhere near as bad. i also cut back a lot of sugars and carbs, not sure if that had any real benefit but im under the belief that it did so im gonna continue doing it. Get yourself a wrist workout bag (things to squeeze and things to open) then look for mobility exercises. And be respectful with the weight you use for all these things, not worth trying to ego “lift” or in this case squeeze and open. Just go nice and light for high reps until you’re comfortable moving up in weight

How r u now?
Help please..
@@Bandana928 Maybe go to a doctor. That would be a start instead of begging random people on RUclips,
Thanks a lot, I've been getting lots and lots of pain due to competitive armwrestling and now I have a video for it thank you a lot I learned today
Has this gotten better for you ?
How were your results?

Did you actually get a tattoo of your ECU? That's dedication!
Super helpful. Exactly what I have after doing to many biceps curls. Now off to get a wrist widget for this. Lesson learned :-) thanks
did the wrist widget end up helping at all with curls?
the wrist widget is a great brace. It keeps my tendon from popping out. I highly recommend it
I dislocated my ECU tendon and have a tear in the sheath..
You literally described EXACTLY what I did.
i have it also but could u tell me what should i do , i'm using heating pad few times
I noticed the snapping every second while I was crocheting. I’ve never noticed my wrist snap so much before. Thanks for this super helpful video, I just bought the wrist widget and hopefully it helps!
Hey, how are you now? My wrist is clicking every second when I just slightly move my hand
How is it now
Thanks for this video, Dr... It was very helpful. In my case, i dont feel pain unless my tendon pull out of the ulna's tear. I believe if i use this wrist widget, it will stop and i could work normally again!
In Brazil we dont have any video like this
Thank you for a very informative video on the ECU. I definitely relate and will look into a wrist widget for some relief.
Great video. Woke up one morning after working arms to wrist pain. After several weeks it was still there so decided to splint it and rest. Much better
Thanks for the good information and the wrist widget may the Lord richly bless you
Ten years ago when this problem was bothering me a hand surgeon gave me a steroid injection without ultrasound guidance. It sure helped. The problem went away. But it's back again. The ulnar nerve is somewhere in that area. I wonder how risky it is to do an injection without ultrasound.
Excellent video. I found it very helpful. Just injured my wrist in this area.
This was very informative, thank you.
Thank you for this video! It's exactly what I have, & this video confirms it!

YESS!! Answers.....thank you. "Wrist Widget" got it
Tennis player here. Guess I'm just another stat 🤣.
This comes from my 2 handed backhand. At the bottom of the stroke, my hand is fully supinated. That's where the pain is.
You motioned like it was the 1 handed backhands that might aggravate the injury, but not quite 😜.
excellent video! i loved the drawing on his arm!
I have the same problem brother what to do???

Hi. Thanks for the video. If you resume activity during the healing process, does this set you back in the healing process? If yes, then by how many weeks?
would the tendon settling across the bone represent itself as a "clicking" feeling?
Thank you for a video, but how can i treat it, and should i skip my upper body workouts to recover ?

The seemingly most affected muscle is this one. The top of the wrist has basically gone down to the bone and the outside muscle of the forearm (left side of left forearm) looks almost concave. The weird thing is I can still do basically all my daily activities like typing and playing guitar without much pain at all. Hey @Joe The Foe I’ve been having the same issues, find anything helpful here? Looking for recs on stretching, strengthening etc.

Lol

@@Bandana928 after the 6 week bracing which i had actually cut at 4 weeks because i was feeling really good.
