      Dear Lucy, maybe i'm wrong...please make me right if i'm making some mistake, but, when it come to single words, this and these have different sounds. but, in quick conversation is almost impossible realize this difference because the two words become equal sounds. so, i think that i realize the difference by contexct.. but this, that , these and those are very confusing for us from Brazil.
      this/esse, essa, isso, este, esta, isto
      these/esses, essas, estes, estas
      that/ este, esta, esse, essa, isso,isto, aquele, aquela, aquilo, que (que is a conjunction)
      those/ estes, estas, esses, essas, iaqueles, aquelas,
      believe it, we get ten words for that.

    • @sarahpanda3252
      @sarahpanda3252 6 лет назад

      kronos trinta Instead of "make me right" you could say "correct me". Also, no. You hear the difference in even fast conversations. It's still this little "i/e" sound where you can get the diefference from.
      I found these papers.
      I found this paper.
      Apart from the "-s" after "paper", which is a help for plural and singular, the "e" sound in "these" is a very deep, long "e" sound. Like Lucy said in her video, the word "this" is pronounced in a very different way and the "e" sound here, [Which is spelled through the "i" here], is shorter and sometimes it sounds as if there is not much attention paid to this sound.
      Sorry, I hoped I could help!

    • @kronostrinta4117
      @kronostrinta4117 6 лет назад

      yeah..actually i almost never watch british videos. but in american conversation is really hard realize this difference. the two sounds seem equal. and that sounds like dzet but sometimes the t souds like d.. it's very crazy

    Here's how I learnen these 4 words:
    this - point the finger on your nose
    that - turn the finger away (as if showing someonene's nose)
    these - point the finger on your eyes
    those - turn your fingers away (as if showing someone's eyes)
    That was very useful before, but now I don't use this method, because I know when do I say "these" and so on (brings a tear to my eye☺)

    Lucy, I'm Englísh so not a foreigner student but I really enjoy your videos, brushing up on my knowledge etc. etc. This video reminded me of why and how we use this, that, these and those, I'm so relieved I get it right without remembering WHY!! 🤔
    You're fun and such a good teacher, thank you.

    • @rezza2507
      @rezza2507 6 лет назад +1

      So both Lucy and Season .Appreciation are native speakers of English. Both of you are Brits, aren't you?

    • @xylemfielding682
      @xylemfielding682 6 лет назад

      Season .Appreciation said "I'm English" so this person is almost certainly from England, which is one of the three kingdoms on the island of Great Britain. So yes, I would say they are both British. Also, Season .Apperciation draws a dichotomy between people who speak English and "foreigners", which is not how it is normally conceptualized in the US. In the US, foreign people very often speak English (if they are from England or Australia or Scotland), foreign people are simply not from the US.
      I am English by descent (my ancestors were in England about 100 years ago), and I speak English, but I wouldn't say "I'm English so not a foreigner". If I went to England, I would be a foreigner in England, although I do have family there. I am their American family, visiting from abroad. I am not English when I am in England. But in the US, if someone asks where is my family from, I can say "my family is English" or even "I am English", but I am not a foreigner in the US because I was born here and I am a US citizen. My father was not born here, he is a citizen now, and he used to be a foreigner. He will always be an immigrant, but I think he's not a foreigner anymore.
      It's kind of funny if I am with UK family and they speak before I speak, because my hair and eyes match perfectly, I am obviously related. My last name matches and also is a very strongly English last name (not even Scottish or Welsh, it is from England specifically). Then I open my mouth and I'm American. Boom, surprise.

    recommendation: I would love to see a video about phone calls or email communication. Expecially, how to be polite, how to request documents or information politely (I admit, I need it for my job - office, accounting, invoices,...). For example my colleague told me, that when I send an email "could you please explain why..." I am suggesting that they have done something wrong and that I am being rude. Is that true? Why? How to say it better? Or could you explain more about "culture" in phone calls? British people are always asking "how are you?" even when they have never met me, or sometimes they do not wait for an aswer and continue - is this your way how to say "hello"? why are you asking when you do not want to know the answer? :D Or British people often reply to my email "thank you for your email" - even when I am informing them about something unpleasant.

    • @rezza2507
      @rezza2507 6 лет назад +1

      A glottal stop is a type of consonantal sound used in many spoken languages, produced by obstructing airflow in the vocal tract or, more precisely, the glottis. the symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is ⟨ʔ⟩. Using IPA, this sound is known as a glottal plosive, isn't it?

    Even I don’t know her,

    Is she a weird girl?
    I don’t think so.
    She just lives her life like
    “Enjoy and have fun today, it doesn’t matter what is gonna be tomorrow.”
    You can see only smile on her beautiful face. She is never in sorrow, she is the brightest star in the universe.
    Is she a little crazy?

    Hi Lucy!! I love your videos and I think you are really good at teaching English. Your videos are helping me to improve my pronunciation and my vocabulary.
    I have seen most of your videos and I would like to ask you if you could please make a video (or videos) talking about the ways of talking, seeing, seizing and walking. There are so many ways of doing these things and some of them are difficult to differentiate. For example I have a HUGE problem with peep and peer. I hope you could help me with this.
    Amo tus videos, no solo porque aprendo sino también porque me divierte verlos. Varias veces me dormí tarde por ver tus videos. Creo que lo que vos haces es una de las mejores maneras de enseñar otro idioma.
    Estoy en mí primer año de traductor público de inglés y la carrera es mucho más estresante y difícil de lo que creía. Sin embargo tus videos me recuerdan lo mucho que amo el inglés y el español y me dan ganas de seguir estudiando.
    Mucha suerte en todo. Por favor, no dejes de hacer lo que estás haciendo. You are really good at it and it seams you love it 😁💕

    Hello, I'm Brazilian and I wanted to ask for advice on where to start studying and practicing English from England, since I'm from northeastern Brazil and here we do not pull both "r" and "t", because of that I identified more with English of England, plus the comprehension of each syllable within a sentence being easier to understand. In my opinion. Your accent is beautiful.

    Hi Lucy,
    Please make a lesson about the usage of ONLY.
    I would like to have a clarity about the usage of ONLY, because it gives a different meaning based on the positions.

    Hey Lucy, i have a video request for you: can you do an example video of long and short vowel sounds in British English? and can you explain how long a person is supposed to hold a long vowel sound when they are pronouncing a word that has one in it?

    • @xylemfielding682
      @xylemfielding682 6 лет назад

      "This" and "these" actually have different vowels, it is not just the length. (This is true in the standard British English accent and also in the General American accent.) "This" has a more back vowel. "These" has a more front vowel. Here is a minimal pair with each vowel: *Bit* versus *beat*. The "back" versus "front" refers to the place of articulation, which has to do with where the tongue is. In theory, long versus short vowels will not change the meaning and it doesn't matter how long you make it.
      In practice, Lucy's advice was very good for native Spanish speakers, because Spanish has a vowel very similar to "these" (and "beat") but Spanish lacks the vowel in "this" (and "bit"). Coming from Spanish, you can make yourself understood if you emphasize that "these" has a long vowel and "this" has a short vowel, even if the two words are using the same tongue shape. A native English speaker can make both words unambigous with both long and short vowel sounds.
      My advice would be: "Make *these* sound as long as it needs to sound for people to understand what you are saying." With practice, it may get shorter and shorter as the vowel sound gets articulated better.
      Unfortunately, when talking about how English spelling maps to English sounds, the words "long vowel" and "short vowel" have a totally different meaning. I advise never, ever paying attention to this meaning, it is confusing. (I will give an example so you can recognize the meaning that is confusing: Some spelling teachers will say that "fat" has a "short A" and "fate" has a "long A, due to the silent E". I think this terminology is misleading unless you are a native English speaker who primarily has trouble spelling correctly. In phonetic terminology, "fate" has a diphthong, so it is two vowel sounds side-by-side, and "fat" has just one vowel sound and it is different than both of the vowel sounds in "fate". I don't have the IPA memorized, but here is a gloss of each in enPR: "fat" /fat/ versus "fate" /feit/. Neither word has a long vowel. Also, there is no such thing as a "silent E", there are only English words and broken rules. So many broken rules, too many to count. "Silent E" implies that the written letter E corresponds to a spoken sound, but it doesn't. Not in English. The E at the end of "horrible" is only there because somebody thought "horribl" doesn't have enough vowels. Guess what? The /l/ phoneme in the third syllable is actually the third vowel, or it's as close as that syllable is ever going to get. Adding an E is just a lie. To be more accurate, nobody added the E to the spelling. The original Latin suffix is -ibilis or -ibile and it's just been dropping letters and sounds as the centuries passed. Spanish did something very sensible and removed letters and sounds at the same time. English couldn't be bothered, and removed the sounds and letters haphazardly at different times. French also likes to remove sounds but leave behind the letters.)

    Hello Lucy,
    I really like the way you teach english and from the day I found out your channel I improved with my listening and speaking skills at first and also (of course) grammar and vocabulary.
    I “bloody” thank you for all the effort you’re making to make the english language in everyone’s hands. The sole suggestion or even recommendation is to do a video concerning funerals and all the things relating to it such as the place we put the dead and also if you can make place for phrasal verbs in it
    I really appreciate your work. (A “colossal”(if it is correct)thank you Lucy) 🌹

    I just can't stop loving your accent! I've never loved a British accent as much as yours (maybe just the Queen's) maybe because your pronunciation is so clear. Your English lessons have always been very useful for me, especially the ones about phonetic and pronunciation (last year I made a specific course about English phonetic at my foreign languages University in Florence). Regards from Italy!
