97 Grand Prix GTP starts up then dies. How to check fuel pump resistor

  • I show in this video how to check the fuel pump resistor. I do this by removing the fuel pump "relay" (believe I say fuses) and bend the 1 terminal out of the way. This puts the fuel pump in high and if this works then your fuel pump resistor is the problem. Thanks 4 watching. I hope this will help someone out there.

      After I changed my resistor which was located inside the passenger front wheel well, I ended up charging the fuel pump to, n then that issue was not longer a problem. Thanks to Pontiac under your rear carpet, they have a removable access panel, which the fuel pump is located right under. I figured it was fuel or spark issue. You could also check your fuel press on the fuel lines. I can’t remember what the supercharged 3800 fuel pressure should be off the top of my read.. hope this helps

    Thanks for the video! Direct and to the point, helpful. If anyone is watching this nowadays Am curious, if when you all say "resistor", you actually mean relay. trenton moos my Grand Prix GTP would not start at all even if I tried starting it repeatedly. Not sure what your problem could be exactly but, could be that when you start the car repeatedly or turn the key on repeatedly it primes/pressurized the fuel in the line which is why it starts.....so, with that being said could be a fuel pressure issue. Did you try putting a fuel pressure gauge on your fuel line and seeing what kind of pressure you have? If so, does the pressure hold, or does it drop? Hope this helps you out.

    Hey! I have a 2003 GTP Grand Prix and I've been having the same issue. It fires but then putters out and quits. I changed the filter and same thing happens. I'm going to give this a try when I can, and if this isn't it, could possibly be the pump? I have pressure to the engine in the fuel line, but maybe my pump is wearing out?

    • @2001pontiacta
      @2001pontiacta  5 лет назад

      Sterling Glover when you checked fuel pressure to the engine make sure while your checking the fuel pressure and the engine is running that it is holding a good steady pressure. Make sure when you changed the filter( guessing you mean fuel filter) you have it installed the right way. Should have an arrow showing the flow direction(I’m pretty sure the lines are different in size so you can’t hook it up backwards)? Make sure your lines are tight, could be sucking air. Hope this was helpful.

    This brought back some memories.
    Back in ~2005, the best I could find on short notice was details on how to hot-wire the relay to achieve the same effect. By then, my lovely '97 GTP had over 230K hard-driven miles on it.
    That was the _second_ time the fuel pump resistor had failed on that car. The first time it failed, my mechanic replaced it, and had several choice, erm, _descriptive adjectives_ to describe the process.
    You know it's a bad design when there were shops selling resistor-relocation kits to move it out from the chasm behind the battery to someplace more serviceable. You've got the dogbone, the washer fluid reservoir, the battery, and I forget whatever else in the way to get to it.
    IIRC, around 2000 or so they moved to a solid-state controller that managed the fuel pump more actively. I forget now-it's been too long. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can pipe up with details.
    That car was a hella fun car. The engine was built in my home town (Flint, MI). I drove her hard and loved every minute of it. Except, of course, when stuff like this popped up.

      Joe Zbiciak yes I always wanted one of these cars when I was younger, sporty and supercharged!! I always like how they look so wide too! I bought this one with a blown motor and 198,xxx on the odometer. After dropping about 3K into the car with motor, gaskets, fuel pumps and sway bar, sway bar bushing, the list goes on and on. I had enough when I had lost low bean head lights, tried many things to fix it with no solution. So a sold it for 500$ bucks! Hates to lose all that time and money but sometimes you gotta know when to throw In the throw. She was just a beater as she was rough, nor body wise (rusted) just cosmetically.

    That's a relay not a fuse , and a fuel pump resistor if its located on the inner fender or fire wall , can be tested with a meter on ohms without having to damage the relay by bending the leg !

    • @2001pontiacta
      @2001pontiacta  6 лет назад +4

      JOGO in my description I do correct myself and say that I called it a fuse when it is indeed a relay. Yes you could test the resistor to find the defective part. For people who don’t have a meter to check, this is a cheap easy way....

      @@2001pontiacta that's definitely a wild temp fix, I tried so hard to track down why it wouldn't start! Already suspected fuel pump due to gas gauge not working/needing sender unit for the pump. Car was on side of roadway miles from home in threat of being towed, '00 Grand Prix GTP, took a few long walks to & from to check on it & seek the issue, was blown away when I bent that prong and it finally stayed running/ didn't shut off. Going to order a new relay & fuel pump in a few days when I get the $ 💪

      @@2001pontiacta hey brother, today I put a new fuel pump in, drove to get gas, forgot I had new relay to put in, installed it at gas station, car did same thing, would start and shut off after a second.
      Put the old relay with bent prong back in, she started and stayed running, so odd!
      The relay issue only started a few weeks ago around when I first messaged on here.
      When I got the car a year ago, the gas gauge & digital readout would both stay around full tank but when needed gas the low light would come on & guage drop to empty, telling me to get fuel even tho gauge wasnt working. Low light was helpful. After installing new pump today the gauge is stuck on empty with low light on, got more than enough gas in it.
      Tomorrow I'm going to take the new pump out and inspect the arm and float, if I can't find the issue going to put the old pump back in and see if gauges atleadt do what they we're doing, giving me somekind of readout & not stay stuck on empty.
      Before I took the old pump out, gauge stayed stuck on full but dropped to e when It was low how it should as far as low gas reading & light, put the new pump in and it's just stuck on empty now with light on.
      Crazy shit. I don't think it's related to the relay issue, that started not long ago at all, gas gauge been funky since I got car a year ago, and got worse upon changing the brand new pump today

      The problem is the resistor is bad. The resistor if my memory serves me correctly it's mounted inside the passenger side fender in front of the tire. Since the supercharged engines use a 2 speed fuel pump i.e. high speed for start-up and high throttle. I got a fuel pump resistor kit from a GM dealer which was I think like $80. And they require you mount it on the firewall also gives directions on how to locate the original resistor wires. When this happened to me I was beating my head against the wall because there was no RUclips videos on it back in 2008. Dealership really didn't even knew it existed but then found the part no.

    • @2001pontiacta
      @2001pontiacta  6 лет назад +1

      From my understandings, yes. That points the problem towards the resistor. Bending that prong puts your fuel pump in high speed. With that being said, I would definitely start by changing the resistor. It’s gonna be much cheaper then starting with say changing the fuel pump. Believe o purchase my resistor off Amazon or eBay and think it was under 50$ bucks. Hope this helps. Your resistor on the Grand Prix (at least on mine which was a 97) are located on the frame behind the passenger side inner fender well. Not a hard job, good luck!

      I’m not really sure how long this will fix the issue.... I guess for a while if I had to guess, since it’s just putting your fuel pump in high... I would recommend replacing the fuel pump, and or resistor so it’s repaired properly. Last thing you’d wanna do is be left somewhere on a road/highway with a tow bill on top of this bill....I always start with the cheaper repairs first, try your fuel filter, then go from there. I again would recommend replacing all the fuel related parts. Thanks for the comment n hope this is helpful.👍

      Jamarcus Edwards is it overheating? I would check, coolant, thermostat. Make sure the coolant is flowing, run the car, when it’s cool open the radiator up(take the cap off make sure it’s circulating).

      Jamarcus Edwards it’s still stalling out? Do you have a gauge to hook onto the fuel line to see if your losing fuel pressure?

    Maybe a bad fuel pressure regulator

    my car does this i have fuel in the line it cranks then dies

      J Rob Did you check the pressure in your fuel line while the car is cranking? Your line might get pressure but, then lose pressure after you crank the car. If you have done this, I’d say you definitely have a fuel/fuel pressure issue. Might be your fuel pump? By what your telling me if sound like the car is being starved for fuel. Again I would try to monitor the fuel pressure while trying to start the car. I don’t remember off hand what the GTP fuel pressure is supposed to be. Hope this helps

    Where is the fuel pump resistor?

    • @2001pontiacta

      on my 1997 Grand Prix GTP it was located on the frame/body on the passengerside. Inside the wheel well. You will have to remove your tire, inner wheel well. If my memory is correct its only 1 bolt/screw that its attached with. If you need to replace it, don't go to the dealer or parts store. Much cheaper online, think i paid like 25-35 bucks. Its not a hard fix or job. hope this helps.

      Yes, like stated a few comments above try your fuel pump resistor(located on the passenger side front frame part if you wanna call it that. not a hard fix just have to take off tire, inner fender well. or try the relays. Start with the cheapest parts first. the fuel pump resistor is cheaper online(ebay,amazon etc.) hope this helps you out.If none of these work, make sure the fuel cable is connected, sometime its dumb thing like that too.
