    Another interpretation of the song title would be "Don't Bring Me Down". Background: Summertime for Finns is the joyous counterpoint to the gloom and depression of the dark winter. There was a disagreement with someone the day before and the person she had that with is "harping on" about it all the time, and getting her down. The summer so far has already been half awash with rain and the attitude of this person is bringing her down even more. She can't ask the rain to go away but she can ask the gloomy other person to smile (turn up the corners of the mouth) and see the good things rather than harpi on about the past which cannot be changed. "Drop" in English is an active been and only the subject (the person doing the dropping) can do it. There proper interpretation would be "Don't cause the mood to fall" or, more succinctly, "Don't Bring Me Down" (i.e. create a bad atmosphere and make me depressed).

    Ahaaa! So happy you drew that one out! :D
    I thought the puhekieli would be fun/useful to get a better feel for how words are shortened (or stolen from English), and it's a happy-sounding summer song. Though the weather's gone cold again, but that's kind of what it's about anyway.
    Now I feel bad I didn't watch and thank immediately: Thank you so much for taking the time to do that! Smiling.

    Do more of these please. One of the most daunting aspects of Finnish for me is the difference between kirjakieli and puhekieli. Additionally, it's helpful to have an insider's understanding of slang and usage.

    Great idea! Really educating :) looking forward for more !!
    Andd also i kinda have a suggestion (?) - maybe if u already said smth once, you dont need to repeat it several times, i mean, if the same words/phare is mentioned several times in the song, you dont need to translate it several times (like "mul on" was a little bit overused in this song ahah soo you could've just skipped it after secord time it appeared)
    Hoping what i wrote makes sense haha xx

    I like this video. I learnt a lot. Don't be afraid of tempo, because you write stuff down and I can pause the video when I need to. Very good! Very useful to see puhekieli translated to kirjakieli this way!
    P.S. If you are looking for improvement, add the essence of the song at the end of your analysis. I didn't know this song, and my latest impression is it's about dolphin's, which of course it is not! That was only one line, but being one of the last, it stuck ....
    EDIT: I just listened to the song. No need to add "essence of the song". It just is ..... a song. Thank you very much for your translations, I learnt a lot!

    This was so random. I was looking for finnish songs, and I came across this video. I clicked on it because... why not! Then I see the first song mentions Costa Rica which is where I am from and then I learnt there is something called Puhekieli, is it like a dialect?

    • @KatChatsFinnish
      @KatChatsFinnish  Год назад

      Wow what a coincidence! I have a video that explains it in more detail, but puhekieli refers to spoken Finnish as opposed to the more "formal" Finnish that you see written down and spoken in more formal situations :)
