One thing to consider is that most rides will have already shut down by the time severe weather is nearing the park, so many of the cue lines will more than likely not be accessible. Another thing to take into account is that the employees are trained on where to send guests in the case of a severe weather scenario as the park has several areas marked as “weather proof” in the event something like this were to occur.

I was actually there during a flash flood! The rides were indeed down for most of the night, and we ended up evacuated from the flooding park. This was about September 2018 I believe. It was our first time going, too 😂 The water was knee deep in some places according to the staff who guided us out. They took the route with the shallowest water because my mom was in a wheelchair. We went about ankle deep or so, maybe a lil higher.

the likelihood of a tornado hitting Six Flags could likely be calculated using the frequency of tornados touching down in Arlington, the average distance traveled of a tornado in Arlington, the total surface area of Six Flags, and a specific length of time like the next 10 years or 20 years

    Good video!
Some insider info from when I worked in Ride Ops YEARS ago. You are for sure correct that the park has severe weather procedures in place. Typically there is a combination of Phases (I, II, III) for proximity of lightning and Codes (A, B, C, D2) for storm severity that are issued through radio dispatch and park/ride phones to crew. If I remember correctly, Phase 1, lightning reported 10-15 miles of park perimeter; major roller coasters shut down including tower, sky coaster, Superman. Phase 2, lightning 5-10 of park perimeter; large flat rides, midsize outdoor coasters close. Phase 3 lightning has been reported less than 5 miles away or in the park; all outdoor rides stop operation. Code A, moderate to heavy rain heading to park. Code B strong storms with the potential of strong winds heading to park. Code C severe storms with hail damaging wind heading to park. Typically Code C starts park announcements of the approaching storm advising to seek cover. D2 is a tornado. All park employees are asked to head to designated shelters and ask guests to follow them as they head to the shelters.

    • @jonmartinez2467
      @jonmartinez2467 4 месяца назад +3

Again this was years ago so I’m sure a lot has changed. Like you mentioned in your video the park will preemptively close early or even the day before bad weather is forecasted. But back then SF would stay open no matter the weather so we would experience many phases and codes during storm season. D2 was only called once during my years there and it was legit intense. It’s one thing to try and get to safety it’s another trying to do it while corralling stubborn guests.

@@brody8647 significant debris and flood damage from the storms that blew through that morning. There was no way the park would have been able to clean up in time as well as have rides operational for park opening. Also keep in mind that people who work at the park also live in DFW, so if you recall how bad the damage was throughout the Metro; and people without power, there would understandably be a lot of call outs from those people affected.

I'm both a tornado and roller coaster enthusiast so this was very interesting. The only thing though was that you kind of underestimated how powerful ef3 tornadoes are. Most buildings in the park would be badly damaged and the wooden coasters there would be destroyed completely. These tornadoes destroy well constructed homes, so a giant pile of wood would be demolished. Also an EF4-EF5 isnt impossible there either, just hasnt happened yet.

@JBThrills While this is a good video and you did point out potential safe zone I must note something as a SFOT ride operator. For every ride when a new Team Member or employee is trained, one of the things that they are told about and tested on to earn the certification for that ride is the closest weather shelter. Also we are instructed that when severe weather occur we are to make our way to these locations and encourage guest to follow us to seek shelter.

Six Flags New England has been hit by a few small tornadoes around EF1 strength. I was in the park for one of them. In line for Joker 4D freespin and these announcements started playing for a tornado warning. They closed the rides, and sent everyone to either leave the park or seek shelter near the food areas, games, or bathrooms but those areas all crowded super quickly so I left and as soon as I got in my car and started driving away back to CT, I saw this huge anvilhead cloud and a rain wrapped twister moving into the park. It didn't damage many rides because this was closer to an EF0 and there had already been an EF1 the previous month that permanently closed several other rides.

This is good info. As a former Six Flags Houston employee (security), knowing where to go in such an event is important because you never know when something harsh will come at you out of nowhere. A good example is earlier this year(2024) during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Weather was cloudy and light rain was expected. Lots of people came for the carnival rides. A local news channel was making a live report from the location when the rain hit. That rain soon turned into hail. LOTS of golf ball sized hail! There are videos on RUclips on this.

That's why I thought having a new theme park in Oklahoma would be a bad idea, because I thought Oklahoma but when i did some research, Texas gets hit by 136 tornadoes than any other state in tornado Alley every year. I don't know if it's just me but Oklahoma keeps getting the bigger ones. El Reno, and Bridge Creek, but it's just me. However there hasn't been any theme Parks that have been hit by any tornado in the past decades especially by a F5 which are the most violent tornadoes on record. So I think it's fine to build a new theme park outside of Tulsa.

And when it comes to New Orleans closure, there are a lot more factors than just the damage. Six Flags had been going through a bankruptcy, and were cutting costs all over, New Orleans was a victim of that. Over Texas would be a completely different situation, of course the fact its the OG park, as well as the fact DFW is a huge area, and they might still see value is fixing up the damages if not too severe

@9:27 Katrina did not make a direct hit on New Orleans and the town only had tropical storm force winds. Katrina made landfall further east in Mississippi after crossing the Miss river delta south of New Orleans. The flooding in New Orleans was just from storm surge up the river into the lake. So with that being said, an EF3 tornado would have wind speeds pretty much 4 times worse than the winds experienced by the park in New Orleans.

Crazy how we just had a severe thunderstorm in Dallas yesterday, there was also a tornado warning and flash flood warning. The area where I'm at specifically was hit the hardest, a tree was knocked down and a door was also ripped off because of the strong winds.

I went to six flags yesterday, the titan was shut down due to the tunnel flooding, and the texas giants line was short as ever. 7 days ago, a really small tornado touched down in my front yard at midnight

Of course, we all know that you would just go to the bathroom with a lot of walls around you. I mean it’s not like they got a basement somewhere in thepark where an average Joe can just walk on in to take cover like that’s gonna happen I mean am I wrong?

Frontier City took a glancing blow on June 13, 1998. It was on a Saturday, park full of guests, and from eyewitness accounts; it was a chaotic scene. Luckily the tornado hit the parking lot and adjacent areas, thankfully sparing the park of a direct hit.
It was also a F-1 / F-2 tornado, and not a violent or large tornado.

As a Texan, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding, and tornado warnings are a common occurrence in the spring and summer. I heard tornado sirens going off two times, one while it was pouring down rain. If I ever visit six flags, I hope not to face this situation.
I’m also from a state that’s in tornado alley, so the threat of tornadoes is not new to me.

Man if that happens then god help the people trapped thier with that monster of a tornado :O Im talking possibly hundreds of injuries and a few deaths. And imagine all the top rides all destroyed or in pieces scattered all over the property and some end up in other neighborhoods through them being carried somewhere else :O
