The Tonight Show Band was the last of the Swing Bands. Was watching that night as usual. As a tenor sax player in jr high and high school, Tommy Newsom blew me away.

Truly one of the most moving renditions of this song. I wish they would have put this out on a CD. Doc, Tommy and Ed along with a wonderful string ensemble. I cry every time I hear it. It is so beautiful. A very touching tribute to Johnny!!! God Bless all of them.

A wonderful piece of music to begin with and probably one of the most moving arrangements I have ever heard. Such wonderful musicians that we were entertained by, courtesy of Johnny Carson, a comedian clearly in a league of his own.

Took the NBC tour when I was in Burbank...when you got to the "Tonight Show: set, one man was setting up his spot. Tommy Newsom. "Hardest working man in show biz" I shouted. Tommy nodded and smiled, then went back to his business. That tour was fantastic!

  • @SteveMickeyogi

Tommy Newsom looking at Doc doing a solo at around 2:52 is everything. This was a happy memorial, this show. I recorded this somewhere. The creamy sound of all the the strings are great, but Tommy and Doc sound like an entire brass section from a big band, their heritage. Wonderful tribute to Johnny...and a tribute to their talents along with Ed Shannessy (spel?) and kudos to Dave.

Wow what a song-and 2 of the best musicians. I actually shook hands with Doc in Aug 1975 after a Tonight Show (guest host Joey Bishop) in L.A.-luckily I did see Johnny, in Chicago doing a full stand-up show. All the same, RIP Tommy, and long live Doc. Hear this song again and just say "See ya down the road where we'll all meet again"

This performance on LETTERMAN and CBS, not NBC, … tells you ever you need to know about what a Troll Leno was as remains. He just won’t go away. Carson wanted Letterman, …and the planets were aligned for Conan. I wonder what we lost in the process?
