Yep, oil in a bucket of fine sand not only cleans but sharpens shovels, rakes and garden tools. Love what you are putting out ! Thanks. Oh, I use the less toxic vegetable oil to control mosquitoes.
Growing up, we put fence posts in a 55 gallon drum half full if used oil. Then we built a fire around the drum. This caused the oil to thin out and wick into the center of the posts. You could literally watch the oil creep up the post as it got hotter. Posts treated this way lasted 20 plus years, and in South Louisiana with the abundance of termites, this was a long lasting post treatment.
I will have to see how to heat the oil. I've placed it on the bottom of all the supports for the cabin, and bottoms of any fenceposts etc. It DOES wick up but not like you are describing. :)
Morning Nikki. I always keep my used motor oil to quench steels as well as use it to coat my forged items to keep the rust off. Also brush some over a new weld to keep the rust away. Used motor oil can also be rubbed into leather boots or shoes to soften the leather and help make them water resistant. Don't forget oil cloth, used motor oil mixed with linseed oil will waterproof canvas tarps. Another use is undercoating vehicles and tractors, you do need to reapply every 6 months or so, but will slow down the rust.
I knew there were other uses, and thought of you both when I talked about using it to quench metal, and that you would have some great additional tips :)
Good morning! I'm so glad that it was helpful! I found it interesting that you can still buy heaters that run on used oil. In emergency/disaster, chances are you will be able to drain some oil from cars. Now they need to have A/C's that run on used motor oil lol
I save mine, but I always am running out, bc I use it on all the wood posts for anything i build lol I need to get a hook up with a oil changing place. Especially knowing I can buy a heater that will run off it.
I didn't think about it here on the farm. I'm pretty frustrated that wood peckers and ants eating up the regular treated post so old oil may be a solution. As a kid it was common for the county to spread old oil on county dirt roads for dust control. It was almost like blacktop. Plenty of old oil here on the farm that is mostly used for starting brush fires and lube for hinges etc. Used hydraulic/trans oil is in oil cans to lube where you want cleaner oil. Common past practice was put used oil in Diesel fuel tank. Old gas tractors, heck yeah.
Awesome, thank you! Check out some of the other videos I've done, there are a lot of ones on subjects I haven't seen on YT before, but I found interesting and researched :)
Very cool! Well, now you know a LOT of other uses for it. Matter of fact I used some today on a stump of an invasive tree I've been fighting for months lol
The older H-45 Military tent heaters will burn used motor oil. My Grandpa "aquired" a couple of them when he came back came from WWII and used one in his shop and one in his pole barn during the cold Missouri Winters, the one in the pole barn didn't get "Blazing hot" but it kept his tractor and other equipment from freezing when it gets negative fu(k this outside.
You can purchase heaters now that will run on used motor oil, which I thought was a great tip, as in an shtf situation, you might be able to get car oil :)

Good morning Nikki , I uses old oil for my posts for my dog pen . It helps keep the wood bees from chewing on wood .

"I see your thinking with your dipstick Jimmy! Whack!"
Hi Nikki pretty cool, I learned a few new things thanks
Awesome, I'm glad I can still show people things :)
I collect my used oil and take it to a recycling outlet.

Morning Nikki Great Job
Thank you!!

I use drain oil as bar oil in my chain saw.
👍 Great information Nikki 👍. I have used motor oil for most all on your post 🏕️
Thank you! It's good stuff...I need to get a hook up with an oil change place bc I'm forever using it on any wood to keep termites away lol
Grandfather undercoated cars in the thirties to fifties. Grandmother used it for mosquitos in her rainwater barrel.
I'm hearing that owners manuals for cars in the 20's-30's suggested using the used oil to stop rust on the sheet metal.
Very true. But back then they didn't understand that the oil could end up with junk in it that would actually cause rust. :)
