- This summer was my first time growing sugar baby watermelon and it’s been quite the experience, possibly due to the climate?

Great video. I’m growing sugar baby watermelon 🍉 and a few other melon. Pray I have a great harvest in July, California Zone 9b😀
Watermelon has a curly tendril where the fruit was connected to the vine during the growing process. If the watermelon is ripe, the curly tendril should be almost completely dried out. If the curly tendril is green, the watermelon was picked too early and is not ripe.
When the tendril closest to the melon is dry thats a good way to know.
Absolutely!
Thanks for that tip 👍
@@gofigure4920 7 is WAAAYYYYY too much. Trim it down to 2 maybe 3 if you are planting vertical
I agree. With hand watering you get to check your plants on a regular basis.
Ohio neighbor here! Zone 6b! My first sugar baby plants are looking good this year. Thank you!
in Fayette county ohio. My first year growing and my babys are looking fine! next year i need to plan better cause they have taken over my garden. My new fav hobby!
You convinced me to trellis these this year in Houston Boss. Keep up the good work ✌Love
I hope mine grow over here in Louisville! I heard that the stem gets brown when it’s time to pick them, so who knows! I wish I had the space to grow the crimson variety… Thanks for sharing your harvest with us! 🍉🍉
I grew sugar baby watermelon for the first time last year. They are really sweet. Unfortunately, my watermelon didn’t fully ripened. Several things…planted them a little later than I should have, didn’t get that hot summer heat, and basically just ran out of time. I needed a good 30 more days.
Great job!
I love how you trellised the vine. Those vines can take over all your real estate. New subscriber and I am looking forward to going through your content.
I’m a “dirt and water” type of gal too..I mean things have been growing since the beginning of time without fancy, expensive “organic matter, mediums” etc. 🤦🏽♀️
Man that looks insanely good
First time seeing your videos today. Great job!! Well done! I will certainly be watching.
Last year was my first time growing sugar baby watermelon. They were so good!
Yes!I had my first crimson watermelon and it was ripe, sweet n juicy.I couldn't believe it being my first time.Im going to harvest one of my sugar baby this weekend, here in South Florida,we have been getting so much rain everyday for about aweak,I lost 3 crimson they split.🙏
great video, its amazing what God gave us. Just watching your fruits and vegetables grow from seeds is priceless
I have crimson sweet growing now. They just popped up over the weekend! I can’t wait to harvest them. You just made me order sugar babies! I can’t wait to plant them
i planted some last week and they sprouted and so excited. thanks for this video!
Good video man! Typically the field spot (yellow colour) comes from growing it on the ground. It won't come if they grow up a trellis or fence. I did some a couple of years back and although small, it was super sweet. I'll be doing some again this season. You earned a sub!
Thanks for subbing !
Thank you for this video! I’m growing them for the first time this year.. hopefully I am able to harvest some 🙏🏽
How'd it go? 🤞🤞
Thanks for sharing! This is my second year growing them. First was successful. I too water manually and appreciate your dirt and water approach. Good luck with future plantings!!! Keep filming! 😊
Very nice video! The way that juice dripped I knew that melon was gonna be sweet 😊🌿
Crimson sweet are my favorite as well. I'm considering growing sugar baby this year as a space saver since we have moved and my garden is much smaller.
Amazing looking crop. This may have convinced me to consider growing vertical melons, I did not know this was possible.
What a great looking watermelon! Awesome job.
Thanks you
No fertilizer. Just love ❤️
Hand water to have a personal relationship with your plants.....YES thought I was the only one!! I just cant do drip even here in new mexico because if all you have to do is flip the water on you dont spend enough time in the garden and things get out of hand, and you definitely dont get to witness the story of every little seedling.
We are in Westfield, Indiana! This is our second summer growing sugar baby watermelon. They didn't do well last year. Hoping to get at least one good melon this year! 🙏
Westfield? We definitely need to link up
They look perfect. I'm I Sydney, Australia and I'm going to try to grow them this summer. Hopefully the possums won't get to them like my pumpkins be cause I live right alongside the bush
I plan to grow these next spring/summer. thanks for the video. especially for weighing the watermelon so I'll know how strong my trellis should be.
Awesome! It looks so good! 😋🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉 I'm growing sugar baby watermelon as well! I'm excited for them to grow. Thank you for sharing
What a wonderful garden! I just picked up a small seedling of Sugar Baby at the garden center today. I know it’s a little late to plant, but I’m looking forward to growing them for the first time too. :)
Thank you for sharing this. I just planted some a week ago.
The yellow spot you were looking for comes from the melon resting on the ground. You had these growing vertically. Watermelons are heavy feeders when it comes to growing them. They need a lot of water in the begining and towards the end you water less so they retain their sweetness.
Nice job, that watermelon looks so good and sweet I can't wait until mines are ready to eat.
Dang! That looks so good! Nice job! 🍉 oh and hi from Detroit
Hello from Indy!
A beautiful black man with a green thumb. Ohhhweeee! Great video, never even heard of that type of watermelon 🍉 before...actually, it should be obvious that there are different varieties but 🤷🏾♀️
My Crimson Sweet died off early but I'll check them out again since you like them so much. I must not be watering enough.
Hello, that Waterman is so lovely!
Thanks for sharing!
I have a few sugar baby seedlings growing in my garage under my makeshift grow lights and plan to plant out them by a trellis once the nighttime temps warm up a bit. Are you growing them again this year? Curious how you trellised them. I love the idea of vertical gardening. I also see you didn’t support them. Did any snap off or were they ok? At nearly 10lbs, I’d worry about them falling off! Thanks for the great video!
You can support them with a stocking. It will stretch as the watermelon grows and support them along the way on the trellis
That is a beautiful melon! I'm going to try sugar baby this year.
Thanks very much from Libreville Gabon
The yellow spot is made from the underside of the melon sitting on the ground. Yours is not on the ground.
I had mine sitting on grass and no yellow spot.
Man I want to do some of these. If growing up a trellis, how tall does the trellis need to be, and how much space do they need between plamts?
Beautiful harvest! Thank you for sharing.
Nice job! I have Crimson Sweet and Sugar baby planted now in Fl zone 10b. I also have 7 more types planted for trials. Your Sugar babies look very uniform in size which is quite impressive. You do not get the yellow belly on yours due to not being on the ground I assume!. My best Sugar baby was 20 lbs with subsequent melons being smaller. How often do you move your watermelon patch? Most authorities wait 5 years to re-plant in the same spot. I am waiting till the 4th year to re-plant in the same spot with watermelon.
It looks so delicious.
Thank you for your video I have never grew watermelons before my 8 year old son wanted to and I was always curious if we could grow them I'm in Canada on the east coast so our growing window is pretty short but were given it a go I will sub your channel because I'm interested in watching and learning from someone that knows what he is doing. All the best.
I see you trellis your watermelons, that's what I plan on doing this year. How far apart do you space them? Thanks
Great video 🤩keep up the awesome work Soil Brother 👍🏽
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to give it a try my first time out here in Kansas we'll see what happens
New subscriber here! Love your channel❤️❤️❤️
I just came across this channel and really like the videos, could you please show how to made the trellis for the sugar baby watermelon, I have limited space to grow, and a strong trellis would work perfect❤
I'm in Mid-Texas. I've tried for about 4 or 5 years to grow Watermelons 🍉....the rodents are good to watch and eat them! 😢 they don't leave me one! I've put out rat 🐀 traps...I've enclosed the melons with plastic, fabric and even vertices, everything you can think . what do you suggest?
How many melons do you get per plant? I have two on my single plant right now. Next year I have to plant more of them!
Ah. Now I’m excited to try my hand at these.
I love sweet watermelon! Do you think that the Crimson can be grown on a trellis too?
I do but it will need to be supported.
I like all watermelon I'm growing sugarbaby n Charles gray down n ga
I'm growing watermelons for the first time this year (Crimson Sweet). I'm in northwest Arkansas, so a warmer climate and likely a slightly longer growing season. When you say, "the yellow spot", do you mean the ground spot? I'm unsure why that would be expected to appear on a trellised melon, since it doesn't touch the ground.
If the melons do well this year, I might try a yellow fleshed variety next year.
I noticed you didn't have them in a sling. Have you found that the vine is strong enough to hold the vertical melon without a sling? Thanks for the video! I'm growing, cantaloupe, watermelon, and yellow melon on an arbor!
Yes, the vine was more than strong enough to hold them without the sling. The bigger varieties may not do well without a sling
@@SuperHumanGarden great to know, thanks!
The vines are out of control. Can I cut them to keep them in the garden box?
I'm thinking about buying this variety.
Is it just as good as the Crimson?
To be honest, the Crimsons taste better to me.
I'm planting sugar baby for the first time, also first time grower,I need all the help I can get .😊 What kind of soil do you use
For the watermelon I use a combination of native soil, compost and sand!
@@SuperHumanGarden Thanks!I just spent so much money on manure, blood, bone meal, some white powder stuff and miracle grow.Well now I know better🙏😊
New subscriber here ... very nice watermelon!
Thanks for the video. This is my first yr growing sugar babies..I have 3 growing right now. They look beautiful..How often should I water them? 3 melons on 3 different plants trellised in SC zone 8b.
Usually if its 85 degrees or above I will water a little everyday. Under 85 I will water every other day in the morning. If it rains a lot I won't water for a few days.
@@SuperHumanGarden Thank you for responding...I think I've been doing right ( fingers crossed)😅
Did you mix any limestone in the soil growing the watermelon, or did you skip that?
Are these in pots with wood trellis ?
You don’t use any fertilizer? I would like to try that too. Great video!
great job. enjoyed your video
Look delicious, thank you for sharing
Do you fertilize at all? I'm new to gardening I live in miami older folks say you can throw a seed in the yard down here and it will grow but the internet with their info 🤕😵🤷can you grow stuff without fertilizing it
I didn’t fertilize them last year and had a good turn out with just mixing a lot of sand, but in previous years I’ve used chicken manure to fertilize but I think the most important aspect is the sand from experience
How much spacing did you give in planting since you trellised?
I’m probably getting a late start but I’m trying this.
I just planted my sugar baby seedlings last week. They grow pretty quick once they get going.
i grew some 2 weeks ago and so you are not too late.
Oh that looks so good. I just picked up seed. Do you use a trellis? I’m in zone 5b and this will be the first season trying to grow more of what we like to eat.
Yes I do use a trellis! I’m in zone 5b/6a myself. I’m in Indianapolis
@@SuperHumanGarden I’m about an hour north of Champaign, Illinois. We’re supposed to get down to 26 and possibly flurries tonight so I’ll be working on potting up my seedlings instead to have a plant sale in May.
Lol I’m in 5b as well! Planting tomorrow
man i’m tryna get our sugar babies to grow like that
Great job.
New subscriber from Ghana.
Please can watermelon be planted in a waterlogged area ?
The place hold a lot of water whenever it rain's.
Is it near sand?
Nice! I have a 28’ row of them planted. How many melons did you get per plant?
Hi Jonathan I saw your comment.I plant my sugar baby n crimson in tires,8tires 23 plants from seeds,I have over 18 nice size watermelon as of June 7.I just harvest one of my crimson and it was sweet n juicy! And this is my first time growing melons😁,I still have many small one's the bees are busy over here.I lost 3to spliting.
Nice I’ll holler back when I get a tally on mine.
@@jonathanlong8682 how many did you get?
New sub here
Very informative thanks sis..
Hello dear: 1 plant can keep how many fruit ?
How are your trellis set up
Does this watermelon climb like cucumbers?
Yes
Thank you for sharing.
You wouldn't have the yellow spot because it was not on the ground. The yellow spot appears on fruit where it is touching the ground. If on a trellis like your fruit you just picked,, you have to look at the closest tendril to see if it is dried up. If it is, then its ready.
I hope mine comes out nice and sweet this is my first time
Great video!! Just subscribed
Thanks for subscribing
Why is mine yellow, is it not ripe?
Thanks
nice looking watermelons my sugar baby watermelons wont get big.
Guess i will try sugar babies this year
You said "yes it's sweet" but is the flesh crisp and juicy ?
Yes!
💯😋👏🏾👏🏾
I don't go by the. Yellow spot I go by the tendril
Good 🍉
Subbed 🌱
The yellow spot should be from sitting on the ground and yours were not.
