I was born in Basildon, and I am back there now. It has always been violent. Back in the eighties, it was the most violent town in England, most of the shops in the town centre are shut now, like most town centres, it was a nice place to grow up though.
Some southerners have the nerve to complain 'it's grim up north'. They conveniently forget places like Basildon or Dagenham, Bracknell, Luton and Jaywick exist.
Medway, any London shithole, Croydon, Portsmouth, Slough, Margate, Bristol... Whereas the north has Chester, Halifax, Harrogate, York, The Wirral, Durham which are nice places. And Manchester is great
I remember the railway station being built in the 1970s, used to watch it take shape from day trips out to Southend as a kid..... In the early 2000s i drove evening bus services around town (when the red buses were used) and never felt threatened at all, in fact it was better than driving the 474s around Canning Town, Silvertown & North Woolwich!
I've lived here 60 years . Its so run down now , worse than ever. Hardly any shops open now not worth a trip into town. There's nothing to do in town either. With Asda closing soon we wont even have a supermarket. I would love to move out of the area.
I used to go shopping here in the early 1960s. In those days, the shopping centre was very modern and convenient. There were plenty of places to park and a good variety of shops. It's a pity that it seems to have been in decline for the best part of sixty years!
Yeah I've lived in Basildon since 1993 and it's fine and you're right everywhere of this size with the similar mix of social and private housing would be pretty much on par. There's plenty of positives and if you went out with your camera in the middle of summer and avoided shooting the odd pile of crap here and there - which is inevitable these days, you could easily paint a different picture.
Basildon was the first town I lived in the UK when we arrived to the UK in 1991. I was 6 years old at the time. My mum and dad worked as doctors in the hospital and we lived close by. I remember shopping at Eastgate and loved going to the Toys R Us near by. Although we lived there for only a year before my parents got jobs elsewhere I will always have fond memories of the town and my primary school Lee Chapel.
You missed the fact that English is only the 3rd most commonly spoken language in Basildon Town Centre on any given day. My brother was sitting on his motorbike waiting at the traffic lights and 3 foreigners tried to steal it from under him in broad daylight!!!! You needed to go mob handed to be safe on the Five Links Estate at one time, but the same was also true about the Mardyke Estate in Rainham (now demolished, rebuilt & renamed, but now English is rarely heard there now). Just saying as it really is.

Interesting. Basildon is a bit of a shithole but in all my years of going there, no one has so much as even looked at me the wrong way. I've not felt unsafe there ever. I would have thought Harlow or Dagenham were worse.
Well well, I left Basildon in1973 It looked much better then. All the shops were occupied. There was no rail station. It was kept reasonably clean and tidy. It looks like leaving for Australia was the best decision I ever made.
I don't think its actually the people in Basildon, most thieves operate outside of their living space, people don't thieve from places they live nearby because people easily recognise them. I see a strange pattern here, hospital gets bad rep, new hospital opens... Where have I seen this before? Oh yes, Oldchurch Hospital went downhill and shortly later Queens Hospital opened - that got a pretty bad reputation shortly after as surrounding hospitals closed and the staff with the most complaints just moved to Queens!
Certain parts of Basildon are way worse than others, and you'd never go there if you didn't live there already, and I think it's those places that bring the overall place down. The overall rating of the hospital by the CQC is actually 'Good', I was there today in fact!
Basildon is no worse or better than a lot of other places in the UK since Thatcher and 14 years of tory rule . I lived in Lee Chapel North as a teenager ,and found Basildon to be a nice place to live

Compared to London it’s great. The parks are beautiful and plentiful. Basildon lacks decent jobs and pay which is why retail is suffering. Crime rears its ugly head when poverty is widespread. Solution is better paying jobs and more work availability. Needs a complete investment to rebuild many areas to be more beautiful looking especially east gate and west gate. Transport needs improving and better roads and pedestrian access on the duel carriage ways as the bridges aren’t convenient or adequate. I’ve lived here for 4 years and I’m always looking for solutions that would improve the area. Apart from the above I love living in Basildon.
It's interesting to see a positive perspective on Basildon. I'm looking at moving to Basildon, specifically Noak Bridge. Do you think it's safe for a family of black immigrants? Are the schools diverse enough? Thank you.
I used to train at a gym in the town centre in the evenings. Never had a problem with car theft (also had a worthless car, which probably helps) Other than that, it's a terrible place and I will be glad if I never step foot inside it again
