We hope you're all doing well and doing the best you possibly can during these unprecedented times we're all living in these days. The Coronavirus has impacted life in unimaginable ways, and the fear that has emerged from the unknown has had some even more negative consequences that could be more dangerous than the actual virus itself. Unfortunately, some people have resorted to harassment, bullying, hate speech, threats of violence, and more.
We have been sharing our lives on and off of our boat for nearly 5 years, and we do so with the intent of putting more positive energy into the world and have never, nor will we ever, do anything that puts lives in danger or promotes hates on any level. We hope you enjoy our content, use your best judgment and do your best to keep you and your families safe during this difficult time in our history.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. We anchored near you last Thursday night (Grand Banks 42, Xanadu, with yellow bootstripe) and were surprised to see you in the South Sound. We live in Olympia and have been social distancing by cruising the local area for a few weeks. We are taking this seriously, since we are in our mid-seventies, but not at the cost of our humanity. There are numerous good anchorages to share with you. Swantown Marina still has guest moorage and you are welcome. Grocery stores are nearby and you are welcome to use one of our cars to shop or run errands. We live a short walk from the marina, and I’m happy to deliver a car for you to use if you need it. Let me know if you would like to share contact information.

Wow. Hearing this now, in 2023, is a stark reminder of how bad things were early in the pandemic. Fear is a powerful thing that caused many to resort to hate uncertainty, and others to widthdraw into isolation as a protective measure. Sorry you had to endure anger and hatred directed on you in such a vile way. It's rather ironic for me as I have found your channel just recently and enjoy your content as an escape from the toxic policitcal environment in the US. Rather than watch the news and the crazies, I tune in hear you and other RUclips channels with calming and genuinely human endeavors. I'm grateful for that. I do believe the worst part of this pandemic is it's ability to turn inherently good people, who intention is to protect their community, into arrogant, scared, aggressive ass holes. You are not putting anyone in danger by spending 95% of your time completely isolated. It's sad how people have truly turned against their good nature during these times. We need to love and support one another. These threats come from a hideous place inside us all that is being surfaced through a mostly sensationalized fear that comes from lack of rational thinking during extraordinary times. My wife and I had a vacation trip booked to the San Juan Islands in 2021. We’ll I hope they enjoyed harassing you guys because that’s 10 grand they will never see. I showed my wife your video and we can cancelled the trip, we’re going to Grand Cayman instead, they appreciate visitors.
I was on a smaller island in the San Juan’s last summer walking my dog on leash and some ducks walked across the road. A lady drives by and says “ Hi! Nice dog. Did you know those ducks are half tame and if your dog chases them, they might put him down?” Then we saw her in her yard a while later a few hundred yards away pruning trees. Just got a weird vibe there. They indirectly threaten to shoot my old dog cuz he stared at a duck? Wow.

It's sad the state of the world has come to this. I've watched and enjoyed your videos from the start, there are so few trawler channels on RUclips and I appreciate you allowing us to come along on your adventures. There are always a few bad apples who feel the need to comment, most likely those jealous of anyone enjoying life, but when they turn to threats to your person I feel it should be brought to the attention of the local law enforcement. Sadly comments such as those can sometimes cause certain individuals to act out. Better to be safe than sorry.
Thank you so much for the video. It was well done. We live and cruise on our boat full time, and your video was timed perfectly for us. We have given up our moorage in Everett starting May 1st. Our original plan was to circumnavigate Vancouver Island this summer and head to Mexico in the fall. Of course, now we do not know what the plan will be but we will be staying in sound somewhere instead of considering the San Juan's.
Oddly enough, as I write this in real time on April 19th, we are anchored right next to you in Blakely Harbor. While we may be the closet humans to you we feel totally safe. :)

The South Sound has been fantastic and we highly recommend you stay and investigate the various anchorages from here on south as well as Gig Harbor. People are getting outside responsibly, waving from their kayaks and in good spirits overall. Best to you both as you embark on your next cruising journey 👍
Love your channel. Especially appreciate all the "how to" stuff. These people that threatened you are afraid. Scared people make bad choices. Dont assume it's just talk. These threats could escalate. I'm pretty sure these are criminal, local and possibly federal. I think you need to report it to the authorities. Be safe!

So sorry to hear that you received hate mail like that. People react out of the norm when subjected to a barrage of fear that constantly comes at them. Thank goodness this has somewhat subsided now. I could feel your pain watching this video. The truth is that the vast majority of the evil mail that you received was likely from a very, very small group of people. The vast majority of the American population are incredibly warm and welcoming people - this from a Canadian that has traveled to the States many times over the last 45 years. Forget the negative comments and simply carry on. You are sending out warm, positive messages that we all (small # of exceptions) appreciate!! Stay safe!
I saw some of those comments on the previous video you posted, and said to myself here come the trolls. Unfortunately all social media apps has this sort of behaviour and it will never be eradicated. These particular comments shows people who have absolutely no clue as to what is happening at the moment. Your decision to go afloat at this time is one of the best forms of containment not only helping you but also helping everyone else, including those are whining about you. Ignore it.

Sorry for the a holes emails. Shawn I feel for you working on the water maker, I can remember working on our boat back in the eighties, and screaming swear words at the boat designer’s. There should be a law that they have to work on the systems they design and see how they like it. Keep up the videos love you two.
I have lived on the Kitsap Peninsula for 40 years and am saddened at the deterioration of the culture in many areas. As others have said those threats are a felony and should be treated as such. I urge you to take them seriously but bring law enforcement into the picture. They need to be reminded that we are a nation of law not vigilantes.

Interestingly, when one questions individuals in many of these organizations, they are astoundingly ignorant about the topics which they profess to be against. I imagine you will see the same IP addresses over and over again. Ordinary, decent people love your channel. For example, boating and the water are not my thing. Not in the cards for me. But here I am, absolutely loving your journeys and stories, latching on to your great life on the water, not least of which includes great courage of your convictions. Keep following your dreams. We are privileged to be able to follow your dreams (for some of us, when we should be following our own dreams -- procrastinators). The very best to you!

We were going to plan a trip to the islands this summer. Going to take our business elsewhere this year after your video. There are plenty of friendly places still excepting guests (with proper restrictions) around Puget Sound. You don’t deserve that treatment. You guys were social distancing and doing everything right. I am so sorry that people are so fearful that they have let that fear become paranoia toward others. It is easy to go down the blame rabbit hole and to hide behind a screen to act out toward others, even innocent mislabeled as enemy others. I don’t think releasing fear in angry tirades really is a healthy release for anxiety, but I understand wanting to defend home and health in some form, but believe that there must be a better way. AGAIN, exceptional job explaining and demonstrating your Nordhavn 43's systems. I hope to purchase a Nordhavn as soon as possible, subsequently I've bookmarked all your videos! My dad has a 40' Marine Trader trawler on Lake Michigan which he recently sold. On June 6 we are setting to deliver it with a route taking almost 90 days from Traverse City, MI to St. Augustine, FL. It will be our last journey on a boat which has been in our family since 1983.
I truly am sorry that you're both going through the hate and harassment. You're doing the right thing by staying on the boat. Some people can be awful and tend to say things on social media that they would dare not say in person. If you need help please reach out.

If it was not for the border restrictions that are in place and the 14 day quarantine I would also be glad to offer you a port of refuge from the haters where you are and a vehicle to use while on shore to get your provisioning done in our little hamlet of Sooke Vancouver Island. What you are describing, with all the care and the intention to isolate yourselves out there, getting then such hate mails and worse, makes me feel really ASHAMED and yes, ANGRY towards such inhumane People who act that crazy! If someone threatens me in such a way, I call the Authorities, even if they do not act upon, I would never stand down to such a bigotry. That is so UNAMERICAN! I would make public all those E-mail adresses and send all these hatemails to as many as possible Agencies, Touristmarkets and even Airlines. One day Corona will be over, but the bad and even criminal behavior of these Bullies not. I WOULD NOT FORGET THEM. When things are over, I would turn things around and visit them with international Journalists. Sailors or Boaters anchoring out and minimizing their footprints have done already as much as somehow can be done. To threaten them and telling WE WILL HARM YOU AND YOUR BOAT is simply speaking a declaration of WAR. I understand that you must be quite, as you still are there. But I must not. Any person working on a Ferry has 10000 times more contact with Asians, with folks from around the Globe then you do. These Folks are so much out of Controll. I would not forget that. I live with a woman who was a teenager in Germany during World War 2. She says she is seeing the same behavoirs that led up to the Nazis taking control of her country. The islands while filled with "nice" people are also breeding grounds for tyranny. The voice of dissent is often crushed. The worst part is that's where many who felt differently about the world went for peace. Now it's a rage chamber... Just a reminder Islanders, you don't own it anymore than I own Seattle.

Even we in Switzerland have been taken, without any consens our Rights, given to us and fought for hard and paid in blood! Switzerland has no more free citizens, our national voting results have been in the past 20 years not been set in place, because what we Swiss voted and won, is going against the rules and point of views of the EU and their illustrious Human Rights for Criminals and Murderers coming from the ranks of the Illegals, Africans, Arabs,and most of all, the Islam. Our Governement just past 6 month prior to Con19 a new and vefy bad Guncontroll by which they want all of our weapons back. Then came Corona. Coincidence? @@whileysea thank you for the reply. The woman was my mother in law. She was very candid about her life and experiences in Germany as a 12-16 yr old girl during WWII. She lost 4 brothers and was never told what happened to them. Was a war bride an immigrated in 1959. To her credit she was filled with the most love I have ever seen.

@@whileysea cheers to you Rover. Can you keep a secret. The US is on a lockdown stay home order. Just like Freedom we left our home base a week ago in our small RV fuel prices are down 60-80%. I am driving the country. We are keeping to ourselves. All the parks and campgrounds are closed. We are still staying there as we are self sufficient. In 1800 miles I across I90 I have counted 5 RV's. Suffice to say it is the trip of a lifetime. I will respect others, especially those freightened but I will never give up my liberty for tyranny or terror. Bless you and your countrymen.. Some locals in the San Juans have a lot of animosity towards whom they consider outsiders. Over 30% of the homes are vacation homes with housing prices now driven up to the point that some locals need to live off-island and commute via ferry to service jobs on the islands. The Coronovirus has just given these disenfranchised locals a new target of those now staying in their vacation homes or on their boats. You're abiding all state laws in social distancing - you're being quite responsible. Please keep the videos coming.
I've long lived with the understanding that in a crisis, some people display the best of humanity and some do not. Clearly, what you've experienced is completely uncalled for, even under these circumstances. We will get through this, but we should also never forget.

Your response to the negativity was well thought out and certainly more mature than what prompted it. You expressed your respect for the persons who made such threatening comments. I would though be sure to share copies of those threatening comments with the appropriate enforcement agencies with jurisdiction over that area. Threats of that nature should not be dismissed without investigation. This crisis has brought out the best in most people and has showcased the worst as well. Continued best wishes to you both!

I have contemplated a water maker for years, the horror stories of maint, replacement parts cost and availiblity, plus initial system cost, along with high energy needs to run high pressure pumps it has always kept me from going there... but my interest continues....

I wake up each Sunday in anticipation of a new episode. I usually take a look to see if it’s up, then I have my coffee go downstairs to watch in my TV room. I find your vlog to be both educational and entertaining. I recently purchased a 2020 Ranger Tug R 27 and can’t wait to get out on the water. I have a slip just waiting for her but delivery has been delayed. In the meantime I enjoy watching your videos. I have seen them all. I am deeply disappointed by the behavior of some of the people on San Juan Island. Friday Harbor was number one on my destination list but now I am not sure. Wow... San Juan sure has changed. Used to be higher than average intelligent people that lived there. I used to have a place there in the 80’s. Western Washington State’s politics apparently has leached northwest WA. Sad... commentary of things are a’changing..

The "thumbs up" ratings and the number of positive comments speak for themselves. I know it's hard not to take it personally but this is an interesting example of how seemingly normal people can become crazed when things are out of the ordinary. We have a couple traveling in a large RV that we watch and they have experienced some of the same reactions. Hopefully this will all be over soon. Take care of yourselves and the pups.

Shawn, have you pulled out the data sheets for the spectra, lately? Membrane performance is benchmarked at a ???% salinity seawater at 70 Deg F. In the winter with 50 deg Puget seawater our 48"/24 Gph rated unit has all it can do to produce 17 gph. In the summer anchored in front of a stream outflow it zooms to 28gph. With your future cruising plans suggest adding more redundancy to the electrical power sourcing and more membrane surface area. Great videos!!! And we will be having great troubles returning cruising to previous levels with 14 day quarantine as the only resource. More testing both antibody and virus investigation is necessary.
And I would continue to "respect their wishes" even after this is all over and never set foot on "their" island ever again. If I was a company that supplied the island with anything they needed I would also inform them that my company was also respecting their wishes and would no longer furnish them with their needed supplies. In other words, if they want to be isolated then by all means let's make it a TOTAL isolation from everything...

Been watching you two for awhile, but my first comment. As others have said, ignore the haters. I love that you took the high road with your response. As a long time cruiser, I always try to be very sensitive to people whose home waters and shores I visit. Sometimes, there is just no way around ruffling feathers. The negative karma will come back around in due course when their tourism dollars dry up because nobody wants to go there post COVID.

Hey guys, sorry your experience has had such negativity pointed towards you. I go back and forth on how i feel about this situation all day long. I am the Harbormaster up here at Deer Harbor Marina and i can tell you that the number of people who have run to Orcas for refuge is really alarming. We have zero hospital beds with a lot of permanent residents who are in the high risk category.
I have had some heartbreaking conversations with some boaters looking for a home throughout this, i took in a few before the county shut it down but i had to turn away a lot more. I have also had some frustrating boaters who just assume we are ok with housing everyone on a moments notice during a pandemic.
The comments you received were obviously way out of line and i am sorry you were subjected to them. These are not the feelings of all the island residents i assure you. We’re all in this together as humans is my belief.
I do believe though most boaters are safer at home where they can actually quarantine easier. Boating can be tough when you have to rely upon a marinas services to survive. You guys look to be very self reliant with a water maker and generator but even you were needing come ashore every other day.
Currently we are open but in a limited fashion with hours and employees. This only compounds the problem to be able to help boaters unfortunately. Anyway, i would love to discuss more if you would like. You can call up here, or just stop by next time your in the neighborhood. Maybe a free ice cream would smooth things over?🤔😎

The offer was really more about talking with someone who makes a living serving boaters in the San Juans. Nothing will excuse those terrible comments made. I just thought maybe we could exchange stories from both sides. Ice cream was just a bonus.

Realizing the medical infrastructure is limited in the San Juans, medivac still operates flights to Bellingham or Seattle. If people take the necessary precautions as mandated by the CDC, the risk of COVID19 transmission is significantly reduced. The other issue is WSF still provides service to and from the islands and that is your lifeline to the mainland for food and basic commodities. As we are doing in Seattle, we are staying home and wearing protection when having to go out for groceries and other essential needs and keeping the six-foot-rule. I'm assuming that's being done across San Juan County.
There will always be "mean" people. You guys bring joy to your viewers at a time like we are living in. Thank you for that. You are always welcome to North Carolina. Please keep the videos coming.
Love your videos. I think it would be important for you to take whatever evidence you have on these people sending messages and turn it into the local authorities. These types of people need to learn a lesson. You can stay wherever you want--including the waters near the San Juan Islands. I'm sad that you made the decision to leave but I understand it.
