    Science has shown you need 6 hours to reconsolidate your memory, such as muscle memory. If you play too much you are probably interrupting those 6 hours, and because of that you don't really remember the lessons you consciously and unconsciously learned while playing earlier

    • @pleasecontactme4274
      @pleasecontactme4274 2 года назад +15

      yeah waking up during REM sleep worsens your memory; though i don't remember there being a correlation to muscle memory too
      but nontheless, sleep mad important cuz tired/sleepy eyes can easily make you bad at hr or dt

    • @inconnn
      @inconnn 2 года назад +1

      @@pleasecontactme4274 not really talking about sleep just time in general you need 6 hours to reconsolidate a memory. though sleep does has an important role in memory consolidation and reconsolidation.
      basically when you play osu the memory that tells you how to play osu (your muscle memory) becomes labile and can begin changing again, so you can learn to play better. then once you stop playing you have to give yourself enough time to take everything you learned and reconsolidate so that it becomes stable again (can't change until you use it again) id imagine that using it before hand can interrupt your memory and make you not really improve.

      @@pleasecontactme4274 no I'm not talking about sleeping 6 hours I'm talking about 6 hours between you end a session and before you start another session. though I'm not sure how much it really matters since sleep will give you that amount of time between sessions but it's good to keep in mind especially if you change something it can really disrupt your memory

    this is the exact thing that i see with one of my friends... he has a cycle of playing osu!.
    1) playing the game and improving fast (since he is fresh)
    2) seeing an opportunity and pushing himself to his limits
    3) getting tiered of the game (and even hating it) and feeling like he is getting worse
    4) leaving the game for a month or two
    5) repeat
    most of this is caused by his extremely competitive mindset that is really hard to change, he is doing his best to improve, sees huge progress and then stagnates because he becomes saturated and exhausted from not cooling down. his extreme competitiveness makes him always push himself to his limits and never letting go, causing him more harm than good. and it is evident from his play count graph and rank graph which look like spikes for a short time and then nothing for two months.
    while having a competitive mindset and pushing yourself is good and should be done regularly, you also need the opposite of cooling down and letting pressure fade and coming back to the game fresh. clear from the feeling of "getting worse" the more you play.

      about point 3, in reality he's getting mad at himself and just subconsciously masking it as hating the game (and that also explains why he always comes back (he doesn't really hate the game itself)). Try to convey this to him in an informative way as self improvement advice, he should relax more and give himself a break (physically and mentally) and try to be less harsh on himself. It can be hard and demotivating even, but it can be done.

    it has been months, I am legitly getting worse and worse over time. I gave myself enough rests, tried fixing my techniques, went back to the basics, tried to not think that I'm getting worse, playing songs that I like and just enjoying the music. I am well aware that improving can take a lot of time.I watched tons of videos like this, and I fully agree that everyone can improve and I've seen a lot of players improve even slowly, but once I start playing, the scores says it all. I cant beat my previous scores, they're not even close. I went like almost 1 star rating below compared to before. After a while I started playing offline, to take away the pp system from my thoughts, even honestly I don't care about pp anymore. Nothing works. I don't want to quit, I love this game. But right now, after almost half a year of degrading, it feels like I've hit a wall, and then the wall hit me back to where I was before hitting the wall. Every session I went through pushes me back further and further. Sometimes I put NF just to enjoy the songs in case I failed in the middle. 30+ days of playtime and I barely step on top 100k. Not to mention the amount of time I played offline. At this point, I'm not expecting any improvement at all, all I want is just to not get worse. This is nuts and it's driving me crazy. I can't believe this is happening. It's so fkn sad. Maybe it's my fault, maybe things just go wrong around me, maybe I'm just unlucky, or as eminem said, maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano. I hope no one will ever face this. Anyways, goodbye osu.

My skill has been degrading so much recently until i started watching ur videos...I do small practice maps everyday and i can say that it really helps...I take some time to rest, and the next day i will be a little bit better...the thing that i still need to get over is my problem where i always try to aim by myself instead of letting my brain take over. I really struggle with that problem... hopefully u can make a in depth video in the future about it.

    One of the things that helped my own mindset the most was kind of like, recalibrating what my idea of my skill level is.
    Most players develop a habit of forming an idea of their skill level around what maps are "farmable" and able to give you pp, but the pp system is designed to push your limits, not act inside them.
    But what is pushing your limits is exactly not what your current skill level actually is.
    What's a better indicator of skill isn't what's difficult for you and the scores that you are capable of pushing, but rather what's easy for you and what scores you are capable of guaranteeing.
    Basically, you haven't proven you are capable of an FC until you have actually FCed it, so don't make your idea of skill around a bunch of maps that are "FCable" in your head but you actually haven't yet.
    I started a personal goal for myself of picking a relatively comfortable difficulty level and FCing literally every map I have in that difficulty category, rather than playing for pp.
    This has helped my consistency and mindset a lot, I have a very accurate idea now of what I am actually capable of and also what skills and patterns I need to improve on, and at the same time you will improve before you know it when taking this kind of approach. Then when you feel confident or in tip top shape you can push for scores that are beyond your fundamental limits.
    This method also let's you practice everything, whereas pp farming usually lends itself to focusing on what you're best at and gives you a very narrow range of maps you end up playing.
    And since I make progress every session on my goal of FCing everything, it's a lot less frustrating than spending hours every day and only making progress when I am in beyond perfect condition.

    • @marquisewilliams3904
      @marquisewilliams3904 2 года назад +1

      I have the same mindset but with acc (since you can technically FC with shitty acc). Right now my goal is to at least 95% acc or S rank 10 maps within a certain local star range (say, 4.11-4.2). It’s an arbitrary number, 10 maps, but in my mind it also reinforces the idea that these kinds of passes aren’t flukes, and that my skill is actually good.
      I also prefer acc over FC because it eliminates Sudden Death nerves. If I miss one I don’t feel the irritating obligation to retry the map. I can try to make up for it with great acc. And needless to say, the higher the acc, the more likely you are to FC.
      I actually journal my osu! improvement on my profile: osu.ppy.sh/users/26601370

    I recently took a break for about a week and after a break I always have to get back into the right mindset but then I play better then ever. I try to take breaks when I notice that I am not playing as well as I could or if I am having less fun then normal. Also I try to switch it up evertime I load up the game. Sometimes I just play multi lobbies for 2 hours, or a 20 minute map I know I won't fc or even pass with no-fail. And perhaps the next day DT farm or some HDHR plays.

    i ALWAYS stop playing if i feel slight burnout. one really nice thing about this game is that you can quit whenever you want (unless you're in a tournament setting) so i really do take advantage of that. i've been on a huge break and haven't touched osu nearly as much yet i've been setting a lot of really nice no mod plays (i suck at no mod as i am most comfortable with HR) and have had high 200pp to 300pp chokes, keep in mind i'm only rank 80k. specifically for the people that put in a lot of hours and feel like what they're doing isn't working, i think the best thing you could do is take a long break to reset any bad habits you've built from over playing. when you are done with your break i think it's important to practice specific skills you're fundamentally lacking in.

      Many times the most talented players are the worst teachers, if you wanna learn about improving skill and ability/strength look to the people that dedicate to that like weightlifting programming coaches or any other sport

    • @flo7096
      @flo7096 2 года назад

      @@daniel1RM that is true. being a top player means playing the game as an instinct, it's all natural to you, you don't have a routine, nor a training regiment, you're just.. good at it. i know this question is going to sound stupid, specially because i'm a year late but, i'm having this exact problem and it's probably because i haven't played every single day like i used to, but now that i'm trying to come back a little more efficiently, i wanted to ask. should my pauses / breaks be 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours? and should they be completely away from devices and doing something like eating or exercising, or not doing anything at all, just sitting around. or can they be in devices, just not playing anything / playing a different game? (i hope this made sense)

    • @honmi
      @honmi  6 месяцев назад

      I understand what you mean with this question, and I've looked into this quite a bit myself. I think it's completely up to you, there's no "scientifically" or "objectively" best way / length to rest. as long as you're not pushing yourself too hard and practicing regularly (and even some extended breaks can be okay if you think you need them), you should be just fine. just take some time to experiment with yourself and see where your limits are (except don't injure yourself) and what works best for you

    yeah it's really better to turn off your brain when you're trying to fc something. Fun fact. When people fc something or hitting patterns that seems almost impossible for your current skill level, some players say "what the f*ck did I just do", "How did I do this", or anything that you felt surprised. That's you turning off your brain and letting the brain do it's thing. That's where most top players get their what people call it "clips". It really shows that when you trust your brain, you can really surpass the usual skill level you're on
    Everyone is good in osu. It's just that specific type of mindset is preventing you to become one.
