Hey Bundy! Thanks for this. Was changing my plugs and say oil in the third hole and knew that had to be done. Your video is the best one around here. No tacky music and clear instructions. Keep up the good work.
Excellent video. The sequence of removing nuts and bolts and explanation of the procedure easy to understand. Thank you so much. I'm recently retired and watch your videos to learn automotive works. This way I won't be taken for a ride by mechanics. It's good to be able to defend oneself.
My 01’ just crossed 200k miles on a 6 hour road trip. Noticed a misfire once I got back home and took her in for a diagnostic. Told me I needed a new valve cover gasket + tune up and wanted to run me up 1000$ Got the parts off Amazon (valve cover gasket, spark plugs) 70$ total and now my dad and I are gonna knock this thing out ourselves 🤙🏽 Great informative video and definitely a life saver.
I got 300k on mine - mechanic said I got rear main seal leak $2100.00 - I checked the engine compartment looking for oil and found it around the backside of the valve cover and on the left (passenger) side f the valve cover. Saw nothing at the rear main seal. At 300k - it's cooked and cracked no doubt. Thanks for this - it's save a ton. BTW: Toyota Parts does NOT include the two gromet seals and it's $31 - $45 depending on if you pick it up or have it shipped.
Thank you buddy great video I'm doing mine now lol only difference I had was mine didn't hav the full cover thing it had a little 3 bolt plastic thing on the front of the gasket it was definitely annoying tho lol
Was the timing chain a concern or recommend at all? Chain seemed loose...was there chain rattle heard on startup in this vid? If so, tensioner replacement could be verified with the cover off. The amount of RTV you put on seemed to be a lot! Think you promote leaking when you put too much on? Thanks for the video!
The 2 seams where the head and timing cover meet that need rtv. Have you heard if you don't rtv those spots you'll get an oil leak that looks like a timing cover leak? The dealer is trying to sell me a timing cover reseal and I found when I removed the valve cover no rtv on those spots.
@@bundysgarage Hopefully after I do the Valve cover job I won't actually have a timing cover leak. Would be nice if this was my leak all along. Thanks for the info.
So the gasket itself will not complete the seal efficiently enough? I feel like a gasket would be superior to RTV. Do they add RTV for this job at Toyota?
@@trevorbeeler3061 and that's why they leak just there...there is a depression formed by the join not being perfect between THREE surfaces...the timing cover, the head...and the valve cover gasket. The small "hole" formed at this junction is filled by the RTV. Job done....
Hey man, appreciate the video. My seal 100% faulty and probably caused my upstream o2 sensor to fail with the oil leaking. My question is: can you give me a link to the coil packs that come with everything I need? Terrified of getting the wrong ones, ones that just suck, or ones without grommets lol
Hi There, I saw a bit of oil on my ignition coil. The workshop told me I got leaky valve cover gasket. They replaced it today however, I didn't see new spark plugs in their invoice. Can they actually use the existing spark plugs? 🤔
Hello. My gasket was flopping around as I flipped it over to reinstall it, so it didn't sit properly. Now I have to do it again. I guess I need a better gasket or something to hold it in place?
A good video of a simple job... Consider whether you will ever do it again. If NOT, then pay to have it done and walk away from it and do not second guess! At 12:57, the 2 'tapered round seals' are new and installed, but which way are they 'tapered'? ....
Question. How much engine oil was your car burning from the valve cover gasket leak? I'm applying oil every 2-3 days :/ Imma have to do this. It's not my first rodeo. Maybe my fourth time doing this repair. Good thing I got this car instead of my old V6 Maxima.
If you see tons of oil coming from the valve cover and hitting the exhaust that’s when you know you are burning oil from the valve cover. But more likely is last of maintenance and the rings are worn on the pistons and oil is burning that way.
I can’t seem to get the valve cover back on and can still see the new gasket from the side of the motor but the bolts are tight what have I done wrong?
The gasket has shifted when you were putting the cover back on. Take it out of the groove in the cover an use a little glue to hold it in. let it set and try again.
If it's a 1zz the black part is the air intake manifold, the exhaust header is located behind the engine, highly suggest you becareful with the nut as it's a pain when they break without pulling the engine out
If I am planning on replacing spark plugs as well as valve cover gasket, am I better off taking the valve cover off and then replacing the spark plugs while everything is off just for efficiency? Thanks so much
Leave the sparkplugs in...far less chance of something dropping into the cylinder. Replace the gasket, button up the valve cover and THEN take out the sparkplugs and replace them. Now coil packs etc back on and you are done....safely!
So I have a system code sayin bank one is running lean, I’ve done everything possible and can’t get rid of it. Today I noticed oil leaking from the valve cover and it’s missing that bolt on the right side that you said was a 12mm. The car was given to me so I’m not sure what work was done before, but I find it odd that that bold is missing. Do you think the system code could be from a bad gasket since I can’t figure out what else is wrong with it?
What is the part number for the 12mm bolt that is ticking up? I discovered that this bolt is missing on my 2007 Corolla and could not seem to find a replacement bolt anywhere.
M6 1.0 x 35mm is the same as the bolt on the left. It's not a stud so the engine cover doesn't have anything to go onto but autozone has the bolts for less than 5$ I replaced the stud with the bolt yesterday. No problems but I don't care about the engine cover.
is there any other reason ONE of my spark plug wells would have a little oil inside of it after the gasket has been changed? The dealer said its just RESIDUAL OIL? I also found that they left one of ignition coil hold-down screws loose. I have tried pressing down on top of the coil as i tried tightening it.
