- Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones has decided to turn down the controversial offer from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
She instead accepted a tenured position at a historically Black institution. Marc Lamont Hill, host of BNC's "Black News Tonight," joins "BNC Live" with Laverne McGee to discuss Hannah-Jones' decision. The award-winning journalist was not offered tenure after conservatives were upset about her creation of the "1619 Project" for The New York Times. After controversy and public outcry, Hannah-Jones was finally offered tenure, but she turned it down to launch a new Center for Democracy and Journalism at Howard University.

That's what I'm talking about!! Nikole didn't deserve them. F@#k them. I was devastated when I heard she wouldn't get tenured. Then I hoped they'd eventually get it, but she'd tell them "No thanks. I'M OUT! When I heard decided she WANTED to go to Howard, I cried. That's where we want her to be. Our legend Stephanie Mills says "I want to be celebrated, NOT tolerated!" Welcome to blackness & truth. I love it!
This is a HUGE get for HBCU and Howard U. Ms. Hannah-Jones is a brilliant leader and should be well respected at Howard U. Congrats. I will be trying to convince my son (10yr old) to go to Howard just to be in an environment with someone with the courage of a Nikole Hannah-Jones. This is a great decision and win for us all. She would have been lost at U.N.C.
Well let her lead folk outside of NC into destruction w divisive misinformation.
A conservative think tank reported on her labor dispute without her permission. She tried to maintain confidentiality. NHJ has handled the dispute with exceptional grace. I am happy she will be working where she is truly wanted.
Yeah! Not in NC.
👏👏 For knowing your value, Ms. Jones. UNC what a loss, you lost respect. resources, and your students trust!
Nicole Hannah Jones. Forever my Hero. ✌🏾
Never heard of that woman until now…
Didn't Marc Lamont Hill explain why she brought it to light. Why ask why she still walked away?
I agree wholeheartedly with Marc. Nicole shined a spotlight on who makes the decisions behind the scenes.
When work do us wrong, we are supposed to call them out. She did absolutely right. They should have done right the first time. He is absolutely 100% correct.
Well said Mr Hill. This needed to be made public. Black have to be better and work harder 😔
Umm, she did nothing!! UNC made embarrassed themselves!!!
I'm so very proud of her she's going to try and help her people @ HOWARD a distinguished historically black UNIVERSITY!
What's up with this interviewer??? She can't accept that Nikole Hannah-Jones had the power to turn down UNC! 🤦🏽♀️
I came to the comments because I wanted to see if anyone else felt the way I did about this interviewer/Host. Is she going to be a regular??
@@lizt.3176 I hope not!
NH-J was offered minimum tenure at UNC (which then yanked it away, and then with egg all over its face offered it again), and a fully-endowed full professorship at Howard. Which would you pick?
Good
I read something About 20 mil. Is Howard paying that much?
VERY GOOD for you, Nicole Hannah Jones!! You DESERVE better by going to where you'll be appreciated and respected!!
All the best in your future endeavors!! Sky's the limit!!!!💯
March Hill comment at 4:10 is a verbatim statement from the teachings of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad: Accept your own and Be Yourself!
He definitely has knowledge of self he’s quoted the lessons on many occasions
@@blazayblazay8888 He definitely has studied, but every so often he makes me question the principles he stand on. 1. He referred to Malcolm X as "queer", which is blasphemous, and 2. He has a tendency to always tie a discussion about Black people into a discussion about the LGBT community. The people I know with true Knowledge of Self would never violate like that.
@@muskegontribune He's a communist who also loves homosexuality and trans. He's a slave to white leftists.
now she know
I'm glad Nikole Hannah-Jones turned down that measly job at UNC. She will be a wonderful addition to the Howard University teaching staff.
Mark LaMoist Hill…a black male feminist. #sad!
Hebrews 3:13
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Benjamin Dauod that's an interesting observation. I wouldn't have ever noticed that but that's only because I personally don't look at mens lips but MLH fights for your rights to do so. That means that you my brother can look at all the men you want to and their lips because it's your right to do so. I applaud you Benjamin Daoud for noticing the two gentleman's lips and being bold enough to speak on it. Congratulations to the sister choosing to take her talents to Howard University

This is a great 'cultural nationalist' move/optics orchestrated by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
The block is getting hot for Moist Lamont Hill.
Marc Lamont hill got LIL Nas X lips. 😂😂.
🤣🤣🤣😭
Never noticed that and I believe you if you say. We don't look at other guys lips where I'm from. But MLH fights for your rights to do that so go ahead and look at all the men and and their lips that you want because its your right to. Peace
@@anthonyhill8584 MLH is a shrill
Obviously this professor doesn't understand what Howard is are doing with Phylicia Rashad.
Shirley Sherrod.
UNC, although initially ignorant, lucked out in the end.
Did Lamoist get tenure at Temple yet?
Yes he has tenure at Temple
That Professor been had tenure, lol🤣😂
