In the UK we have a thing called a “toastie” which is a sealed filled sandwich which is toasted in a special grill. The grill seals the bread, and you end up with a crisp outside and a bubbling hot interior (usually involves cheese). I could imagine dropping those kombini sandwiches in a toaster and getting the same result. Might kick the flavour up a bit.
This is funny, I'm on vacation in Tokyo and just yesterday I grabbed some sandwiches at the Lunch Pack shop in the Tsukuba Express Akihabara Station. I grabbed 3 flavors, forgetting that each one had two sandwiches in them, basically buying myself a whole picnic for lunch;
I'd really like that as well! Most of these seems like they would be even better if toasted or lightly fried. I always do sandwiches like these in the waffle iron as it gets really crispy 😁
I grew up with margerine as well. Even today it's popular here. We always have a soy based margerine in the fridge. It's a bit more firmer then regular margerine but is just as easy to spread. In Japan as a student I had always a gew in my kitchen because it was an easy meal to tske with me when I forgot to make lunch. Now I don't eat much bread and could live with only noodles and rice, but I always have a few because my husband and daughter would rather eat bread sometimes. besides some sweet ones for breakfast I usually buy the korokke or menchi katsu ones. I would definitely try the kabocha gratin, chili taco and yakisoba. I remember my husband going to the supermarket alone one time. Always fun since he cannot read Japanese at all. He brought back a lunch pack he thought was ham and cheese, but it was ham and mayo. Tasty though, especially toasted.

These lunch packs always fascinate me. I'm afraid I'd go crazy trying all the savory flavors and have to start wearing sweatpants to allow for my expanding sandwich belly. 🤣 And what reasonable prices! If we had vending machines with these sandwiches in U.S. cities, fewer people would go hungry. Thanks for this, guys. ❤❤
So here is a question that makes me always wonder, how are some of those sandwiches not completely soggy when you get them? I make sandwiches for lunch and by lunchtime the bread is soggy no matter what I do unless I toast it hard first. I wonder if its just something different with Japanese bread?
I'd dearly like to try these sandwiches someday. On another note, a bit of trivia about Margarine, it was originally made to be used as a cheap feed for turkeys, it failed, and, Margarine is also just one molecule away from being a polymer.
Try freezing the sweet ones and then half thawing them to eat them. I find pocket sandwiches like that are good that way. We have something similar here and it comes with Nutella inside. I eat it half thawed after freezing it. That is when it is the best. The chocolate is still snappy and crispy but easy to eat. I love the honey and peanut butter one that way too. The peanut butter is snappy and crispy but the honey is just jellified. Sooo tasty.

Love their sandwiches .. the bread is so soft … prefer their egg sandwich than the other popular one which I find too rich /buttery

Since these are shelf-stable, are they loaded with preservatives?
They only last one day. Everything is fresh in Japan every day. Near store closing time perishables get deeply discounted.
