- Me, Ryan, and Matt sent it up North to hike up Huntington Ravine this weekend!
what an experience, the trail had some really exposed and steep parts but as rock climbers we handled it no problem.
I’ve done the Mt Washington summit about 5 times.
1 time we took the Lionhead trail in mid May
Because of all the snow in ravine. .
3 times we took Tucks and 1 time we did Huntington ravine.

Fun trail, as you said, manageable. Wife and I took our 11 year old twins up on a nice summer day. They had zero problem. First winter ascent for them was 6 years later. We generally only do it in the winter these days. In the winter you do not actually follow the trail, but pick an ice/snow gully.
The key on Mt Washington, no matter the trail, pay very close attention to the weather. If the weather might be bad pick another day, or at the very least an easier trail. Coming down Huntington in particular in the rain is dangerous, and being caught in a lightning storm is seriously bad news. Getting caught in a white-out, super high winds, unexpected ice, all really bad.
Play it smart, have fun.
Great advise on watching the weather on this mountian. I hiked up in beautiful warm conditions one year and just an hour later it was freezing and hailing.
That's pretty impressive that you hiked up Huntington with a pair of 11 year olds. I have yet to do a winter accent but I think I've finally accumulated all the correct gear needed to make that happen.
@@ChrisGranata Yes, unfortunately we have people die up there almost every year, and not always in the winter. In an above freezing but cold rain with high winds one can get hypothermia very quickly without proper clothing and rain gear.
Some of the winter gullies are very modest in difficulty. You mentioned being a rock climber, while the skills are different, and you want both ice and snow anchors, it will be well within your abilities with a little practice. And it is a lot of fun.
@@ChrisGranata FWIW: I am getting old I guess, memory is not what it once was, my wife tells me the kids were 9. They still wander mountains with me, so all is good.
Yup! I’ve been snowboarding many times at Tuckerman ravine, I think I’ve only actually snowboarded the ravine a few times, simply because of the insane weather. Washington is a place that commands respect and if you don’t give it you’ll get hurt.
My favorite trail ever!!!! The pine forest after Tuckerman was beautiful!
This was one of my all time favorite hikes.

That is one insane hike. Far far out of my comfort zone of climbing rocks for sure haha. Pretty epic scenery as always
It definitely had a few really exposed spots. Need to be comfortable with every move your making.
There's alot of easier trails up also, all have great views.

That was one tough climb! I enjoyed the video, since I'm an old fart now and can't do much walking, but I appreciate being able to watch your young folks hiking in the mountains.

Super cool! I’ve been snowboarding up at Tuckerman Ravine many many times, have yet to venture to Huntington! My wife and I are hoping to take Jewell trail up next weekend with our dog. We’d like to do Mount Eisenhower and Washington in 2 separate hikes, so we’ll be hanging out on the western side of the mountain. I love the Whites, but as other people have said, I respect them.

Great video. Unfortunately not alot of good videos of huntington on youtube. I'm 57 from Jersey and have never done such an extensive class 3. I am contemplating it but that section at around 8 minutes into the video concerns me.

Yeah, that section just after the 8 minute mark was really comitting, and i think we were going the easiest way too.
I only started hiking this year but I managed Ammonoosuc Ravine in May. I felt like an absolute daredevil going up in the rain but POVs like this are really humbling (but motivating!). I'm definitely still a way's away from doing Huntington confidently, lol
I can't imagine being up there if the weather suddenly turned.
All three of us in this video are avid rock climbers. So this hike/scramble was well below our comfort level. The climbing sections felt easy, but I could imagine someone with less experience not liking a few of the harder sections.
Awesome vid, Chris - brings back memories! The climbers are on the Northeast Ridge of Pinnacle. 7 years ago, I and two other climbers parked up top and hiked down the Huntington Ravine trail to rock climb the Northeast Ridge of the Pinnacle. But there were already 3 parties on it when we got to the base of the climb so we made our way over to the Henderson Ridge and climbed the 4 pitches back up.
Glad you enjoyed it. This was one of my favorite hikes ever. I hope to someday get the chance to climb the route I saw the climbers on, it looked really awesome.
Really enjoyable. Have you tried switching off of the wide-angle lens for close-up shots, like when you were scrambling the steeper stuff? The distortion that the wide lens causes can be a bit nauseating.
@guest6423 I've been using GoPro cameras for years, so the wide angle lens doesn't seem to bother me or make me nauseous at all. I guess I've just gotten use to it.
Around what time in the video did you find the wide angle lens to be annoying? I'd like to go back and rewatch it.
I'll try to remember to change some settings on the next hike to see if that makes any difference.

Its a tough trail. But anyone in decent physical condition can handle it.
Not sure when you filmed this, but my buddy and I would have been on it in mid-ish August and did the same route. We're both from Connecticut, and I had to do a double take. Wasn't us that you encountered- I'd have remembered talking to 3 dudes, plus your weather was nicer than ours.

I wanted to go this way I'm glad we didn't from what I said to you in the other video I commented on . But the trail we took was pretty dope but I will do this one most likely summer time ish . I wish I could send you pics of our trip pretty crazy we also went a bunch of other places that were pretty cool . Good job tho

I want to do this trail with my girlfriend soo bad. But I am afraid she may not be able to handle it. She is 5 feet tall and not a great climber. She has trouble with high stepping and pull ups. When we did the chimney on katahdin, there were a few spots I had to basically reach down and lift her up by her hands. This and the colden trap dike in the Adirondacks are the big scary hikes I want to do sooo bad but I’m afraid for her and I don’t want to cause a full blown rescue situation.
Yeah, this doesn't sound like the best trail for your girlfriend to join you on. There is a few different pretty committing sections. You'll want to recruit some capable homies for this one.
Last time I was up there the summit building was a old shack with two monster chains holding it to the summit. that looks like a new building
The original building IS still up there. and the chains STILL hold it in place. but yes, there is a newer bigger more modern building with a museum in the basement also there now.

As long as your comfortable with a little exposure this is a great hike.

Glad you didn't. I went up when the rocks were a little slick and it was tricky - just regular hiking boots. Something grippier would have been better.
Just did it last night, didn’t know it was the hardest trail and it was raining all night, we started at 330 am and got done at like 7. No experience and didn’t prepare. Scariest night of my life

Well done guys, the only scarier trail than this one is the "knifes edge" at Katahdin.
I can't wait to do The Knifes Edge. It's on my bucket list. I'm sure I'll get up there eventually.

That might be the GoPro wide angle making it look steeper.
We did alot of reading about the hike beforehand and honestly we thought it ended up being easier than people had said.
But the three of us having climbing backgrounds definitely helped out.
Were thinking of either doing the Knifes edge, or the presidential traverse next... have you done either of those.

@@ChrisGranata Nice. I just started the T 25 in NH and am doing Mt Jefferson (Caps Ridge and Castle) in a few days.
Wish i could do that but i dont trust myself with my bad shoulder.
A good alternative would be the Lions Head Trail, or Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Both are great trails that don't require scrambling like on Huntington.
@@ChrisGranata What about the Boott spur trail? Is that a good decent one to do. I figured the tuckerman one I would decend down on.
@darthkillerhog Boott Spur is a good trail too. It's slightly longer than the other two. You get the steeper terrain over with quicker and spend more time above treeline on that trail.
@@ChrisGranata Ah ok, thank you for the information! I'm doing Washington in April. Doing the smaller mountains like waumbek first this month just prepping myself for the big one never done these hikes before.

Did you have a hard time finding the yellow markings? Did you get off trail at some point?
there was one point where we stopped paying close attention and had to stop and look for a marker to make sure we were still on the right path, if you keep a close eye out for them they're easy to spot.

Hell yeah! Great job boys. I did this back in college. Great climb! IMO if you didn't climb it you shouldn't be able to stand and pose with the summit sign! Thanks for sharing! Also nice to see a couple guys just out hiking with regular gear. Tired of seeing all these RUclips hikers with a couple thousand dollars worth of hiking gear just to walk in the woods.

around like 8 mins in it sounds like your SOUL is leaving your body.. Man I dont know if I can do this.. I'm 280lbs.. I've done some crazy shit, but this is beyond my limits probably ... I think I can do it, but I know I'll be dead physically for at least 2 weeks lol
Thats right around the mark where the trail gets a little more serious. You picked right up on that. We thought the slab was gonna be the hardest or craziest part, turns out, it was not.

Yes! The big slab part was pretty easy. Some of the parts after that were very exposed.
What month did you make that trip?

I want to do this hike thsi summer, but those steep exposed scrambles really put me off. Is there a trail that goes up but is less exposed?
Oh yeah, you should look into either the "Lions Head" trail or the "Tuckerman Ravine" trail. Both of those trails are great, I would suggest going up Lions Head and down on Tuckerman. I have Videos of BOTH of the others trails too, they're like 3 years old tho and not as exciting lol.

If you have some climbing experience my favorite trail to take would be to go up Huntington Ravine and come down Lions head.
If you don't have any climbing experience I would recommend going up Lions Head and coming down Tuckerman Ravine.
@@ChrisGranata I grew up hiking hiked a lot of new England just never mt Washington. my grandfather always challenged me to do it but I never did. hungtington looks like a great adventure.

@@ChrisGranata years ago, a friend asked me to go hiking with him. He didn't tell me where we were going. I had good Cardio, and no experience. We went up Huntington and down tuckerman. Huntington scared the crap out of me, but we made it. :o)
