Great White Sharks Seem to Be Around Humans All the Time: Plus a Ground Breaking Study Using Drones

  • In this week's episode, we examine a surfer and great white shark encounter near shore in Southern California. We also take a look at a monumental two year study conducted by Cal State Long Beach Shark Lab that utilized drones to see how close white sharks get to people.
The research, conducted by graduate student Patrick Rex, used aerial surveys of the nearshore ocean waters along 26 beaches of the Southern California coastline. Rex found that although there were always people in the water, juvenile white sharks were only seen at two “aggregation” sites. (Juvenile white sharks tend to “aggregate” in groups along the near shore before maturing and becoming more solitary individuals).

I am shocked how calm those surfers/boarders are, how they just don't seem to be afraid. If that was me (even knowing sharks leave us alone most of the time and watching this channel for a long time) I know I would be panicking and swimming in instinctively - which would not do me any favors!! Great vid as always thank you.

I'm the same way. As much as i like and respect sharks, i could not go in that water despite knowing i would probably be fine. Steven Spielberg really did a number on me as a kid with the movie Jaws, that lasts to this day. If any good came from it, it was understanding the power and influence of media on us.

I surf frequently in SD. It's normal to see lots of animals in the sea( GW's too ) doing their thing. Be calm but hyperobservant just like you would in bear country. There's nothing wrong with being afraid. Use it as guide but try not to let it cheat you of worthwhile experiences. It's hard. 😊

Its great to see the locals here are comfortable knowing the sharks are around and stay calm around them . This channel has some of the most stunning photography of white sharks, well done sir 👏👏

maybe it's not just about being stealth predators, but also about not actually being interested in eating humans, but in murky waters and bad sight conditions being less fortunate in telling the difference before the first test bite.. which can already turn out bad enough for a comparatively small human as we know

    • @wolfen210959
      @wolfen210959 Год назад

They are not and never have been mindless killers, they usually have a very good reason to bite people. Either they are hungry, or they are trying to get you out of the area they are feeding in. Occasionally there can be mistaken identity, or even accidental bites, but those are also less common than some people would have you believe. Most of the time, as Carlos clearly shows, they have no interest in us. Of course some sharks are more aggressive than others, bull sharks for example are extremely aggressive and are known to have the most testosterone in their bodies than any other shark.

I root for the bull, the bison, the snake, the shark, the bear. These people have serious thinking disorders. Twice, in the past few months, sharks ate people and the rest had to listen and watch. No one was by the shore, no one had any help, nothing anyone could do.
It is not likely, but it is significant. That's enough. My goodness. 9 out of ten people who mess with wild animals will be killed or seriously injured by them. It's not a guessing contest.

This channel really is an eye opener. I suspect (or, if my memory serves me right, has been hypothesized on this channel before) that the local juvenile GW’s in California grow up used to humans and therefore don’t see them as prey when they are adults. In less human populated waters that may not be the case. If the sharks can no longer find enough of their natural food, that might complicate the matter.

I wonder if there might be ways to develop some sort of shark tourism that is safe for both sharks and humans and the surrounding habitat. Like a floating pier with a plexiglass walkway or something. Or a gondola that goes out on a cable from the beach to the ocean. I've wondered about the same for areas in the Salish Sea frequented by killer whales. People have a great desire to get close to wildlife and it puts both humans and animals in danger but there seem to be few alternatives to places like zoos. In southern Africa, you can go to parks where there are waterholes that attract wildlife in the dry season - you can sit on benches and watch wildlife from very close without disturbing the animals. Maybe something like large "blinds" in Yellowstone - log buildings with an opening all the way around from which to view and photograph wildlife. A volunteer could be stationed in each blind to keep people from being dumb. Without such opportunities, the dispersed nature of human recreation continues to shrink habitat for wildlife that is sensitive to such disturbance. Again, in Africa, there are parks where you can't leave your vehicle, thus keeping both wildlife and humans safe and confining disturbance to the road ensures that animals have predictable access to areas undisturbed by humans. In those parks the wildlife is habituated to cars and you can be very close to the animals. We need opportunities like this more than ever in a world where social media sites monetarily reward people who disturb animals in the wild to get video clicks.

Unfortunately I disagree, mankind has changed the behaviour of every single species that we have encountered, and not in a good way. We have successfully wiped out most predatory land animals, and it's only a question of time before we get all of them. I believe that only marine biologists should be interacting with marine wildlife, and only for scientific purposes, but you can absolutely guarantee that if there's money to be made, then some human is going to be doing it, no matter if it is legal or not.

Unfortunately we've been getting whale carcasses washing up too. Obviously that brings the sharks even closer. What worries me is why so many deceased whales are showing up. 3 were on my shark watching and alert app just the other day. 3 in one day!! Different beaches but close proximity. It's extremely alarming. I hope the researchers and marine biologists find out why it's happening asap.

I love our Aussie waters. We have sharks by the shit ton because, with them being protected, they're thriving. Excellent outcome imo.
I accidentally kicked a tiger shark that had been directly under me while swimming in our Swan River where Tiger and Bulls are seen frequently (part of it is the bulls' breeding ground). If the shark wanted to, it could've bitten me as my kick would've been provocation but it just continued on its merry way. I have nothing but love and respect for these beautiful creatures.

Sharks are amazing, and like almost all the big sized marine predators are not really a threat statistically. You only need to watch and learn to understand this. But ppl are losing the respect a bit too much. Ppl should know how dangerous can be a 3 metres great white if its reacts agressive in a forced interaction. Even if an attack is rare to happen. Those beauties are fast, strong and fit out formidable weapons.
Forcing situations like this one we are not doing anything good for sharks. Specially ppl who love sharks should have that in mind. Just because we all know the bad news travel fast, and sharks still have that bad reputation among many.

And unfortunately if something did happen to this person the shark would have been demonized and thats terrible. We always need to respect all wildlife regardless if they seem "tame" or adjusted to human interaction. I just feel terrible for the wildlife that gets blamed for incidents that could possibly have been avoided. Anyway thanks for these amazing videos.

This surfer's encounter with this juvenile shark is what could, very well, get him seriously injured or killed by a shark. This shark is giving him a false sense of security that may not pan out well with another shark or, better yet, a hungry one!

The narrator is right..sharks don't want to have anything to do with people..unless of course they're either hungry of curious..in which case you may still get bit since they're curiosity is satisfied by biting things. There's only one sure fire way to protect yourself against sharks and that's to not be in the water with them.

I'm from Montauk and also an avid surfer. As many know montauk is the fishing capital of the world and the same place the wr great white was caught that inspired jaws. Many of my fisherman friends have told me they're seeing way more sharks than ever. And more species that aren't usually here. They pull up at least two bull sharks a day now they say.

I like the idea of a good number of juvenile white sharks around. They will frighten off bull sharks, which are more dangerous, Bull sharks will take a bite out of that thing in the water.
That many around decreases the probability of a bite. Number of attacks per number of sharks ratio!

Surfer was smart enough to keep his hands and feet out of the water when the shark was near to avoid looking like a seal from below. I decided a long time ago I don't like being in the ocean when I watched a dude fishing from the beach and caught a shark. The idea of having God knows what swimming below or near me is enough to keep me From venturing out past knee high
