I think Marti had a fear of the unknown and thus was scared to go for better. As she recites the quotes it's almost as if she is trying to temper the harsh truth of her reality. Lyric had hope for more while Marti merely settle for what was around her.

In revisiting this clip, I realize that as beautiful and confident Marti is I sense she's slightly jealous of Lyric. The other downside is her refusal to think she deserves better. It's evident she's unhappy in the spur moments you look in her eyes; I think she's as big a dreamer as Lyric but not really having the push to go through with them. It's really sad, but those are my two negatives. The positives, she saw the happiness in Lyric and despite flirting openly with Jason at the beginning, she didn't act on those feelings.
Auburn Perry yes! I love your interpretation of this scene! I always see marti as a lovely poet, and a protector who also wanted to be protected and loved by somebody. She is very complex and knows what she wants, even if what she wants isn't what's best for her.
Marti is a thug/gangster just like Lonzo - just the soft female version of it. She endorsed the fact that Lonzo went through with the bank robbery. And whose to say that she isn't an ex-con herself. She may have committed small crimes (i.e. shoplifting, check-bouncing...etc.) to warrant some jail time herself, which may have enabled her to be exposed to some trivial romantic intelligence/knowledge - by which she spews throughout the movie to Lyric. There are PLENTY of intelligent people who wound up in prison and jail, too. Appearances can be deceiving.
I see no jealousy. I see true genuine love between girlfriends. I know jealousy between friendships and this is not it. Marti love's Lyric's brother, even though she knows he's a criminal, but she loves him! She's SO beautiful and she was so honest to Lyric. I wish I had a friend as deep and sexy as she is.

This is one of my favorite movies! And Marty was my favorite character. She just had a beautiful spirit about her. Lisa Carson nailed that role.
