The reason her bubble gown is blue in the stage production is because they couldn’t obtain the rights to make it pink back in the late 90s/early 2000s while creating the show. Same reason they have to use the original silver shoes rather than ruby.
I personally think they chose pink because of Barbiecore, method dressing, and marketing. All the merch and PR was decked out in pink and green because it was distinctive.
@CinemaOverAnalyzed there are leaks which show Glinda in blue clothes for part two So it might have also been to make this film more visually distinctive in that way
@@shippendales8543 From what I saw of the leaks it seems that the blue grown might be for the opening song of Act two called Thank Goodness. I could be 100% wrong there. Will just have to wait to see.
@@CinemaOverAnalyzed I don’t think so. She isn’t fully Glinda the good until after that song. The blue dress is probably for the end of the movie. She will most likely be wearing something more casual for the press conference in Thank Goodness.
@@fataleflareThe leaked blue dress is definitely from Thank Goodness, Fiyero is there with her in one of the photos (it also just really looks like TG with a stage and everything)
@@caril.9384 This is what I think as well. They even went out of their way to make the dress and it's accompanying accessories (her crown and wand) look similar to the 1939 versions. Ultimately, it is simply an updated version of that dress (or maybe a better phrase would be to call it an "inspired" version). But it was immediately clear that that was what they were going for.
I agree. The second official trailer for Wicked is marketed as a "prequel" to The Wizard of Oz. Which isn't really accurate (that's neither here nor there) So it would make sense that she would be wearing pink.
the movie's stylist did a video goign over what design choices they went over, and he outright states that was referencing the '39 movie, but also a pink/orange rose he saw which had the color schemes he thought suited the character. its a fascinating watch
I suspect they might be doing a Legally Blonde with Glinda, where she'll drift away from pink when she's in the midst of being manipulated, and determinedly returning to it at the end when *she* decides who she wants to be. And similar to Elle Woods, going back to pink doesn't have to mean a regression in character development back to who she was as Galinda. On a more pragmatic level, as some others said I think it's likely that they took 'pink goes good with green' and ran with it so they can flood the marketing and merchandise with the two colours. It's much easier to declare yourself 'Team Elphaba' or 'Team G(a)linda' (a division which misses the whole point) if you can buy things in either pink or green. And cheaper to produce if you only have to make two varients of any product.
I agree with mostly everything except the last point, I think it's the complete opposite - the marketing urges people to buy the merch in their color so they can match with their own bestfriend. Like "are we more like Glinda or Elphaba?" and encourages especially female friendships and for them to go watch the movie together
I think they might have Glinda wear blue when she’s the Wizard’s spokesperson in part 2 and only return to the pink dress when she has decided to stop being complicit and use her power to improve things for the Ozians.
I prefer the blue, and I liked that Galinda/Glinda wore multiple colors because I always loved the yellow dress. I would like to add a small no te onto the white, because it's a color that can do a lot in terms of simbolism, yes it means simplicity and innocence, but it's also the color that can be turned into all the others depending on what light shines on it, so it's great to be worne by characters who have not yet decided who they want to be or in which direction they want to go. I'm not in love with Galinda/Glinda's costumes on the movie, despite them being gorgeus, but it would be interesting to see what they do in part 2 (glad to know they are breaking away from Galinda/Glinda wearing only pink). Galinda doesn't really get to dress as Glinda in the movie, as she wears the dress in which she changes her name through all defying gravity, so I guess we'll get to see how Glinda dresses in part 2 and maybe the pink bubble dress would work for that narrative.
All be honest, I have a lot more respect for that yellow dress now that I thoroughly researched why she wears it. I was a little disappointed when it wasn't used in the film. Thank you for adding more details about the symbolism of white! I truly enjoy that both Fiyero and Galinda wear it. It really shows, like you said, that the possibilities of what they could become are endless.
I’m so happy you made this video because a lot of people are completely missing the point of her character. Glinda isn’t good or bad, she complex. Thank you for also mentioned the orginal Oz book.
this was such a great video! another thing i thought was worth mentioning is that the designer of her costumes said that glinda's skirts got wider and longer as the show progressed to represent the power and influence she had
They chose pink because of marketing. They went hard on marketing pink and green. If all the merch was pink and green but they kept the show's colors, where Glinda only wore pink once, it wouldn't have made sense.
I mean, Seeing as they're planning to add things to the Movie ver of Act II, Imagine a new scene where Glinda purposely chooses a pink gown before appearing before the No One Mourns the Wicked Reprise. It could be her way of regaining her ✨️true✨️ self as new ruler of Oz.
I think the pink is really to juxtapose how glinda is truly the good witch and elfie is the bad one, since the pastel pink is really soft and inviting rather than the distinct green and i think if they did follow with blue it would be a bit different as i feel blue is more a distinct/ generic colour and is not girly enough for glinda, and also since they were probably paying homage to wicked the musical and the wizard of oz, but i think marketing could be more distict and new if they chose blue since it would be less barbie and maybe seen as more of wicked, so i think in terms of marketing, blue would be better but yeah, ariana/ glinda is very playful and girly, and blue seems like a more mature colour, perhaps the reasoning behind part 2 being more blue than pink is to showcase the maturity that glinda has grown into, but either way wicked ate and i cannot wait for part 2.
…it represents how shallow and meaningless and purely performative her actions are in trying to ingratiate herself with people when she wants something. She chooses to change her name in the musical and movie to seem like she’s just as affected by Dr Dillamond’s absence as Elphaba, who is currently having a very sincere conversation with Fiyero. She feels left out of the conversation and wants to reaffirm her presence. It’s an empty, meaningless gesture. In the books, it’s far more sincere. Especially as the professor was found dead, his throat slashed. And she was _genuinely_ affected and horrified.
Same! It's an interesting way of showing maturity. I tend to like the reason why she changes her name in the book more than in the musical, but that's just me though.
@@arc7375 I agree. I really wish they stopped turning all her moments of character growth in the musical into a joke. It really takes away from her humanity
After seeing the movie, there's the scene where Glinda is chasing Elphaba through a hallway with the flying monkey's crashing through the windows, she gets her jacket ripped off and I immediately recognized that as a transformation like what you're talking about.
When her sleeves get taken off in the running from the flying monkeys scene. Narratively takes off her fogged glasses that the world around her isn’t what she thought imop. While I like the yellow better at least they did try. 🤔
fantatasic and direct analysis !!! i was a bit sad to see the loss of the wider outfit variety for glinda, and this explains why it's so important!! and i definitely think they just wanted to keep a simple pink/green for the movie. BUT!! it's so important on the stage where you can't see faces and expressions as well. amazing!!
While I do like the blue dress transforation I don’t mind the change to pink here. I like that the movie is trying to honor the many different versions of the characters. I’m holding out for the second part before I comment on her costume evolution but i’m hoping they do some form of transformation. (Insert obligatory acknowledgement of the marketing and copyright reasons behind the outfit choices in both the musical and movies)
Technically, the witches in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz wear black if they’re evil and White if they’re good. Glinda is described as being a beautiful redhead with blue eyes and a white dress. But I love all incarnations of Glinda. The blue Broadway dress always made me think of the original Queen Frostine from the Candy Land board game. The only thing I didn’t like is that Glinda is supposed a powerful sorceress possibly the most powerful in Oz but they took all her power away in the musical.
never thought Glinda outfit changes in length and colour being so important to the storyline (wish that was the same for chloes wig changes in descendants rise of red) Thanks for this breakdown :) well said ^^
Mackenzie Dunn did a few videos on TikTok talking about the silhouette and patterns on the costumes. I wonder if that will be a way to distinguish between Galinda and Glinda. Galinda wears stripes that line up exactly and as she begins her journey to becoming Glinda her costumes begin to become less aligned and embrace asymmetric patterns.
I'm glad you made this video. I had similar thoughts about how Galinda/Glinda's costumes in the stage musical tell an important story about who she is and how she changes throughout the show. The costumes in the movie, while beautiful, didn't seem to do any storytelling. To be clear, I thought the movie was phenomenal in almost all ways, and I don't think the costume changes ruin the movie or anything, it's just an area where the movie could have been even stronger. To me, the biggest flaw was in making her Shiz uniform pink. It's established in the stage show that Shiz's school uniform is in the school colors of blue and white (this appears to be the case in the movie as well). The rest of the students' costumes in both the stage show and movie comply with that. Elphaba and Galinda comply with the dress code in the stage show (wearing blue and white respectively), but not in the movie, where they just seem to break the dress code to wear "their colors" (black and pink respectively). Galinda's choice to wear all white in the stage show is notable. Who else would be bold enough to wear all white? Only Galinda. She's still following the rules. But she wears white as a way to stand out among her fellow students, while still staying within the parameters of societal norms and expectations, in a system that is designed to favor and privilege her. She's not going to rebel against the system at this point. She has a hard time setting aside convention, which is why she just can't leave with Elphaba at the end of Act 1. Even later, when she decides that she wants to truly do good, she does so by working within the system to create change rather than bucking it altogether, as Elphaba does. I really appreciate your point that her bubble dress connects to Elphaba's Shiz uniform through their common blue color in the stage show. It's a subtle way of showing that Glinda no longer will blindly roll along with convention and the oppressive political system the Wizard maintained. I could say more, but this comment is already long enough! 😅
In the stage musical the uniforms represented ( to me at least ) a characters perceived “goodness” or “popularity”. - therefore Galinda arrives at Shiz in an all white version of the uniform, Elphaba is in all dark navy blue uniform and the other students are a mixture of both the blue and white uniform to varying degrees.
Isn't that the best thing for the students to wear? As students, we are as optimistic as Elphaba is, well, singing "The Wizard and I" and as judgmental as Galinda is. It the people we surround ourselves with that make us change for the better.
Ariana’s Bubble Dress in Part 2 is blue as a nod to the stage production!!! and also because Ariana says the blue dress reflects the emotional turmoil her character goes thru during that time.
I personally prefer the costumes in the musical, especially the blue bubble gown and the Thank Goodness dress. They are not only more esthetically pleasing but also feel more Oz and represents the character's growth.
Haven't seen the video YET, but I have a lot of thoughts about the Glinda outfits I would love to share, so bear with me (also, spoilers for part 2 if, but I think not a lot) I think the idea of having Glinda wearing exclusively pink outfits on the first film can work depending on how they handle her story during act 2. I would love to see her wearing a big variation of colours for part 2 to represent how much more aware she is of her (now) public image, as well as the distance placed between her and Elphaba, and how little she can actually be herself the way she was with her former friend. Her still being a very fashionable girl, but now selling her likebility trough her outfits, can show the separation between Glinda and Galinda, and how the politics of Oz affected her on a fundamental level. It can also give more meaning to her first outfit, during "no one mourns the wicked", because the pink could represent her finally allowing herself to be more open, genuine and true to who she is after having made up with Elphaba. Keeping her mostly in pink for part 2 could theoretically work, as long as it also somehow conveyed her inner turmoil and the changes she had to go trough to "serve" the wizard and truly achieve her own ambitions, but it would be tricky to show how unhappy she is if she doesn't have any physical ou stylistic changes, so I really hope that's not what they do. We already have the leak of a blue outfit, that I assume is for "thank goodness", so I am very hopeful they will take the first route on this second installment, but that would also kind of demand she doesn't wear a single pink outfit until after she makes up with Elphaba (not even during "for good"), because she needs to truly find herself in/trough her friend to actually be able to go back to who she is/was during their time as friends. She grows a lot after that, but the pink outfits could represent her essence or actual goodness, her desire to be something and someone that matters, also calling back to how different that same goal has become, with her at first wanting only the fame, and by the end wanting to do actual good for her people. I am, however, not as hopeful about the lack of pink until the very end, since even in the musical the outfits aren't as significant as they can be in film format with so many different outfits, and they seem very keen on honouring that as much as possible. I fear she might wear the pink dress from the begining during their cat fight and "for good", because (at least for me) it would show her character didn't go trough as many changes as she actually did. I really hope that made sense, I tend to ramble and lose myself in my own ideas. English not being my first language also helps in my poor manner of expressing myself, but I really hope I managed to properly express how I feel😅 Now I'll watch the actual video lmao EDIT So, I kind of misunderstood how the video would go, BUT MY POINT STILL STANDS!! I love the ideia of the bubble dress representing Glinda being the only one truly capable of standing up to Elphaba, and most likely will end up adopting it into my on ideas of what it is on both the musical and film. Great video and very interesting take, can't wait to see how right you are when part 2 finally comes out Again, sorry for the ramble
All students in Shiz have a dress code of blue and white and each students outfit is supposed to be unique. Galinda’s outfit in the books was predominantly white. Not blue and not pink
Hi there! Sorry, I didn't make it clear in the video. Those quotes come from the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Which is the first book in the Wicked Years series by Gregory Maguire. It also is the book on which the musical is based.
The film is a film. It's not a live Broadway musical it's an adaption of the musical, which is an adaption of the novel. There are no rules creative. Have the freedom to bring new ideas to a fictional story. Let's stop being overly critical about artistic choices and let the artist do their work.
imo, i think glindas dress is pink the movie because you get to be more detailed and elaborate with costumes in film than on stage. in the stage production, glinda actually only wears pink once (i think). she wears white when arriving at shiz, yellow to see the wizard, green when in charge at emerald city, and then the bubble dress is blue. i think putting glinda in different colors for the stage production is to show is to connect her to the wizard of oz, where she wears one dress and it’s pink, but also show that you’re not gonna see the same glinda you know of. glinda wearing only pink, at least in part 1, is okay because her costumes in the movie have so much more going on that you can theoretically pause and see up close on your screen, whereas a stage show, the costumes needs to be seen from the back, so small details will be lost. that and it’s probably marketing and pr and trying to differentiate from the stage show lol.
God, I hate how much pink and purple G(a)linda wears in the film... It just starts hurting my eyes after a while. I agree there is a lot of visual storytelling in her costumes in the show on top of the fact that they just plain... look better. But, of course, that's just an opinion. For me, the overabundance of pink is just so distracting in the movie that it almost takes away from the depthof her character. She felt like a cartoon. She's dressed basically like Elle Woods the whole time, but in Legally Blonde the pink served a very specific function - she was one bright spot amid all of the dull, dark colours. It doesn't work in Wicked for me at all - it's bright on bright and brighter, and it doesn't say anything.
I think they chose pink for visual reason because it really complement and pop both green and pink. So its more eye catching. I personally want her dress to be blue, but hey in the second part she's going to wear blue dress! And from some paparazi photos we have, it looks gorgeous
In her official role as Witch of the South/North for part 2, they should have emulated Billie Burke’s dress in the 1939 MGM film for continuity. I could look past her hair being acrid blonde instead of reddish, but the costuming, while beautifully made, is not Glinda. But then again, the movie and musical are reductive, generic (literal) high-school drama clichés.
I mean as gorgeous as the dress is, it really bothers me as a fan of the show that it’s not blue. Just like it bothers me that the first time we see Elphaba in the movie, she’s already dressed in black rather than the show where her clothes gradually become black.
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 they only had her wear black in then beginning of the movie because the costume designer wanted to enforce that Elphaba was still mourning her mother’s death.
Mama, I don’t think you have to worry about changing your outfit to describe the changes in the characters clothing to help us understand. It’s almost a bit distracting to your actual pretty good describing and storytelling.

I really love that the bubble dress really mirrors that one christian dior’s FW1945 gown. That and the engagement dress
That's why Cinderella and Elsa where's blue and it calms your appetite and the pink meets blue and purple is just like Sleeping Beauty.
I appreciate this content. It gave me a better perspective as to why Elphie mixed white to black after the popular scene. ❤
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO POINT THIS OUT IT SHOULD BE BLUUEEEE
Haven't seen the video YET, but I have a lot of thoughts about the Glinda outfits I would love to share, so bear with me (also, spoilers for part 2 if, but I think not a lot)
I think the idea of having Glinda wearing exclusively pink outfits on the first film can work depending on how they handle her story during act 2.
English not being my first language also helps in my poor manner of expressing myself, but I really hope I managed to properly express how I feel😅
Now I'll watch the actual video lmao
EDIT
So, I kind of misunderstood how the video would go, BUT MY POINT STILL STANDS!! I love the ideia of the bubble dress representing Glinda being the only one truly capable of standing up to Elphaba, and most likely will end up adopting it into my on ideas of what it is on both the musical and film. Great video and very interesting take, can't wait to see how right you are when part 2 finally comes out
Again, sorry for the ramble
It’s pink because the original dress Glinda and the Costume designer didn’t want it to be confused with Cinderella’s blue dress.
“Make it pink!” “Make it blue!” “Make it Pink!” “Make it Blue!” “Make it PINK!” Make it BLUE!”
The bubble dress is inspired by Diors’s Junon dress from the 1949 collection. Truly a magnificent garment.
I honestly like blue a lot
All students in Shiz have a dress code of blue and white and each students outfit is supposed to be unique.
Galinda’s outfit in the books was predominantly white. Not blue and not pink
She has a blue dress, similar to the Broadway version, but it'll be in Part 2
Seen a picture of Ariana as Glinda wearing a blue gown in part 2.
Have a happy thanksgiving and happy holidays coming up!
Thanks! Happy holidays to you as well
Nice! That was fun!
Glad you enjoyed it!
recent leaks from wicked part 2 we can see the blue dress! its prettyyy
Where did you find these conversations between Elphaba and Glinda, that you referenced in the video?
Hi there! Sorry, I didn't make it clear in the video. Those quotes come from the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Which is the first book in the Wicked Years series by Gregory Maguire. It also is the book on which the musical is based.
She's connected to Disney Owen's Marvel.
The film is a film. It's not a live Broadway musical it's an adaption of the musical, which is an adaption of the novel. There are no rules creative. Have the freedom to bring new ideas to a fictional story. Let's stop being overly critical about artistic choices and let the artist do their work.
"Pink or blue" is bro aurora😭
imo, i think glindas dress is pink the movie because you get to be more detailed and elaborate with costumes in film than on stage. in the stage production, glinda actually only wears pink once (i think). she wears white when arriving at shiz, yellow to see the wizard, green when in charge at emerald city, and then the bubble dress is blue. i think putting glinda in different colors for the stage production is to show is to connect her to the wizard of oz, where she wears one dress and it’s pink, but also show that you’re not gonna see the same glinda you know of. glinda wearing only pink, at least in part 1, is okay because her costumes in the movie have so much more going on that you can theoretically pause and see up close on your screen, whereas a stage show, the costumes needs to be seen from the back, so small details will be lost.
that and it’s probably marketing and pr and trying to differentiate from the stage show lol.
Nice video
Thanks! I'll glad you enjoyed it!
@ :D
Like Galinda says at the end of "Popular," "Pink goes good with green."
It’s sleeping beauty’s Dress all over again
actually, in the book "the wonderful wizard of Oz" she's wearing white
Actually the Glinda in the wizard of oz is peach hehehe
Its sleeping beauty all over again
In her official role as Witch of the South/North for part 2, they should have emulated Billie Burke’s dress in the 1939 MGM film for continuity. I could look past her hair being acrid blonde instead of reddish, but the costuming, while beautifully made, is not Glinda.
But then again, the movie and musical are reductive, generic (literal) high-school drama clichés.
Except it’s not meant to be a prequel to the mgm film and it never has been so continuity doesn’t seem super important
This is more meta, but if they had gone with the reddish hair, I believe that Ariana Grande would have looked less washed out.
Got a Wicked ad before this!
Sorry, sometimes I get a little carried way.
@@CinemaOverAnalyzedif you didn’t get carried away ( which I love BTW ), you would have called your channel “Cinema, Sorta Analysed” 😂
In "The Wiz" the good witch wears blue 🩵
