The Volvo V60 Cross Country is the kind of car that car journalists usually love: it’s a station wagon with rugged cladding, a modest lift to the suspension for urban bumps and gravel tracks, and a luxurious interior with lashings of leather, ultra high-end audio and great seats. But how does the 2022 V60 Cross Country come together in the real world? In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, Johnny reviews the new Volvo V60 in B5 AWD Cross Country mild hybrid trim.
The Volvo V60 is only available as as Cross Country in Australia, and it competes with the Audi A4 Allroad and Avant, the BMW 3 Series Touring, the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack and the Skoda Superb Scout. It costs $64,990 before on-road costs and options.
The B5 powertrain is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder mild hybrid making 180kW of power (241hp).

Great review 🙂 I got mine in Denim Blue/ Blond interior in January and I LOVE IT. I had looked at the XC40 Recharge and really liked it too, but with such little incentive to get an EV in Queensland, opted for the V60CC. I am sure it will be out in an EV at some stage, and when it does, I will change over to that car I believe.

Alas it is a very sad transition for me to the V60CC. Why? Because I finally had to say goodbye to my SAAB 9-5 wagon with 216,000 miles on it and 17 years of use. By comparison, the SAAB is lithe and you feel athletic. When you go over a hump - it felt like a cat landing on four paws. In the Volvo you feel powerful. But it's not the same driving experience. The Volvo takes you for the ride, you took the SAAB out for a drive. Yes there's a lot more to a car nowadays - lane assist, android auto, Kommen Hardon Stereo. But I feel sad and empty now that my 9-5 is gone. I will learn to like my new lass. Eventually. Mine is Blue Denim with a Blonde interior (I don't like getting into a hot car in the summer). Fortunately they put the steering wheel on the correct side of the car here in the USA. Congrats on a well done video!

I struggle with how people find the gear shifter confusing/weird etc. So many journos have mentioned this.
It pivots from a fixed location so it makes sense you'd have to tap it the required number of times to move between gears.
You'd have to move a convention shifter through several dentes to go from park to drive, why does this feel different?

I would die for an all electric V60CC or V90CC. I think proportion-wise it's the most beautiful looking Volvo. The only thing that bugs me about the Volvo is the 1 second (transmission change?) delay when you put your foot down. I think that wouldn't be an issue in an all Electric.

    • @tonybrecht2597

Will be waiting 2-3 years at least to see this. The current SPA-based 60 and 90 series Volvos were never designed for an EV drivetrain and Volvo would never invest in the engineering to convert them to EV drive this late in their model life. You will have to wait until the next generation SPA2 platform which is specifically designed as an EV. The first Volvo model with this new EV platform will be the XC90 either late this year or more likely, early 2023. Its then the case of waiting for Volvo to run through each of the models. So I would not expect to see an fully electric V90/V90CC in Australia until early 2024, with the V60/V60CC not until 2025. Pure guesstimates.

And as for the 8-speed Aisin gearbox - yes its a well known issue across many Volvo models with ICE engines. And the really frustrating point about this is that Volvo already have the solution to the problem but they want you to pay for it. The optional extra "Polestar tune" (standard on some Volvo R-Design models) for its 2.0l 4-cylinder VEA engines, besides a very modest boost to peak power and torque, also includes a re-calibration of the Aisin gearbox which all reports points to a much better shifting on the gearbox - some say almost as good as the acclaimed ZF 8-speed gearbox. And of course Volvo charge ~$2,000 for this upgrade. Disgraceful behavior by Volvo - the better shifting gearbox should be standard across the range.

    • @raeldor
      @raeldor 2 года назад

@@tonybrecht2597 Truth is, I already have the Polestar upgrade on my XC60, but in normal Comfort mode there's no improvement in the delay. I don't really want to drive in Polestar mode the whole time either, so it was a bit of a let-down. I wish they could have improved just that portion for the other drive modes too.

My 2020V60 CC does it too because of the stop/start feature of every new petrol Volvo. It's programmed that way. It can be frustrating. When I want to jack rabbit start, I hold the brake pedal whilst pushing the go pedal. It works wonders the turbo spools up nicely.

5 model range sadly sees V90 gone :( although one of these in pale green metallic with pale leather would be great. Power output for a 2.0 four is actually impressive and a PHEV in range yes please. Rear seat space says more about bulky child seat design than this car’s failings. If you have kids you don’t have to buy a CUV but don’t tell marketing as their SUV hyperbole and cost means they sell more heavy and thirsty blobs on stilts and can charge you more - rant over

Volvo Australia did bring in the V60 Recharge T8 for a brief period of time a couple of years ago when the SPA V60 was first introduced. It was discontinued after only about a year because of alleged poor sales. Volvo does not produce a V60 Cross Country Recharge/Plug-in hybrid. We will never see a fully electric V60 EV until the next generation of V60 is released in 3-4 years time. The current SPA platform which the current 60 series (and 90 series ) Volvos are built on was never designed for EV applications. That is why Volvo's only current EVs are the XC40 and the incoming C40 which are built on the CMA platform which was always designed for both ICE and EV applications.

Unpopular opinion, but a typical SUV in this price range and size class has option for 7 seats, uses about the same fuel and mostly rides the same as a raised wagon. This car is just as niche as a coupe SUV in my opinion. So if you are after a raised wagon with more space than a sedan, just get an SUV unless you want this for the looks.

    • @chasingcars

Seven seat option? What luxury midsize SUV in Australia that costs $64,990 offer a third row? GLB is the only one we can think of, and that’s on the significantly less sophisticated A-class platform.

These are made in Belgium. Researching before rant posting can prevent you looking like an idiot in public.
