You never want to make a claim on your insurance or make any contact with your insurance about home damage unless the damages significantly exceed your deductible. Why? Because any claim will raise your future rates and any suggestion of damage makes you high risk in the insurance company's eyes. Particularly in Florida!
As a former insurance agent, 100% agree. In Florida your hurricane deductible is probably 2% of your dwelling (that's how most agents write policies unfortunately) so keep that in mind.

As someone who has lived in the South East his whole life and owned a home for over 12 years, here are some things you need to consider buying: Weather Radio with hand crank Flashlights (both battery, and hand crank) Extra batteries Wet/Dry ShopVac (not only good for cleaning up the garage, but can suck up water) Rechargeable Battery Banks (for extra charging for your phones) Canned Food If you have a grill - make sure you have propane so you can have a hot meal $100-200 in CASH. If power is out in the area, registers won't work for credit cards TARPS - big ones, small ones Rope Bottled Water Some of this stuff you should buy at the beginning of every Hurricane season. You should also fill up your gas tanks in your cars when the hurricane is announced to hit your area, don't wait until a day or two before it hits.
LA resident here who has been through many many hurricanes as well. A new/modern tip: Purchase an Anker Powerstation (and if you wanted splurge for an additional solar panel they sell for it.) *Even the cheap ones are useful, can charge your phones about 10 times. Also, to add: fill up ice chests with ice the day before if possible and keep them closed until absolutely needed. Even if they melt the cold water to use in the hot house with no power is very nice
Tip from some one that has been thru many hurricans in south west Florida. If you guys are that worried about hurricans get a quote for hurrican shutters. You will protect your windows and your property and will add value to your house. Also never freeze tervis tumblers. It will ruin the cup itself. Glad you and casey made it out safe and no major damage. I live in port charlotte Florida 30 miles south of where milton made land fall. Thosands of people in my area have lost everything over the last 2 storms. Its devastating. But Florida will always prevail. Thanks for the daily blogs and keep being awesome
Also next time get a few more of them! ....here in the UK with the recent heavy rain from storms ( the rementents of belive it or not the US huricanes the traveld across the Atlantic but reach here as storms!) our local authroties wont give out sand bags unless you live near a river and are in imment risk of flooding ....where i live we get garden flooding due to the ground the house is built on ( theres only a couple of feet of top soil then underneath it's all clay so dont absorb the rainfall ..ive live in my hous for 19 yrs and seen the front garden flood once ....in the past 2 weeks its flooded twice ( luckily not right up to the house) BUT they wont provide sand bags and tell you to go buy your own . even if the flooding is caused by flash floods! ..AT least over in the USA they do stuff free of charge for everyone before hand and give out sand bags/ fill your own ..in the uk they dont!
You just need water. No water one flush then gone! One suggestion Kyle. To keep drain in tub from leaking use the tape over the drain before filling, not to mark tub after filling. More useful. Duct work ape best. Any home without duct tape isn’t properly equipped. Most useful stuff in the world. Along with WD-40 of course. 🙂
Maybe really clean out your under stairs closet in case of bad weather keep it stocked with supplies . We always filled our tubs and washers with a well and septic system so crazy the things we learn growing up and still do it ! Glad you guys did okay through it all 🥰 Now that's it over for You get some rest that's very stressful ! It's a life experience for sure I hate storms especially when theirs Tornado warnings . To be fair in the moment it's very scary for property owners and just because his street look fine doesn't mean it wasn't bad for the area. He got lucky. I'm like 10 minutes away from them and lost part of my fence and some shingles. My whole neighborhood is a mess from all the fallen branches and leaves. Even found a dead squirrel in my backyard and an injured squirrel in my front yard (took it to a rehab facility). My neighbor a few houses down had an oak tree split and fall on their house. One street over an even bigger tree fell on a fence and blocked the main road. The back side of the storm was no joke... just when we thought it wasn't so bad and the worst was over the winds came in hard a couple hours later which is not good after so much rain. So yeah, it's stressful worrying about your house and car all night. Also, why wouldn't he monetize a video he took time to make?

To be fair, is his first major hurricane. He's from Wisconsin (which gets the worst winter weather and blizzards) so I guess we people of warmer weather can't handle half of the lower temperatures that he can, and we would overreact with a 50F°when you can see on his vlogs that 0° or bellow 0° is nothing to him😂 he goes out in shorts.
Definitely a scary experience here in Tampa area. We are 49 hours in without power. I’ve also had little to no cell service and this is the first time I’ve been able to watch RUclips. Lots of fresh air and yard work/storm cleanup.
Toilets don’t stop working when the power goes out and water pressure is created by gravity. Water storage in the tub is a precautionary thing in the event that water pressure is disrupted by a water tower being damaged. Glad you guys are safe!
I was going to say the same thing, unless you are on a well system then you have a pump. Most cities do not have well and septic, those are usually in rural areas.
It all depends on what kind of water system you have or if it runs on a pump. I live in SWFL and when our power goes out the pumps in our water will stop working or run at a super low rate. It’s different state by state. I used to live in the Midwest and this wasn’t an issue.
As he filling up the tub with water, I was thinking this…I had heard several times that a bathtub is a place to shelter in in case of Tornados!!, covering yourselves with pillows and such. I don’t know…just what I’ve heard. Am I right on wrong? Anybody??🫤

I have lived in Florida most of my life.Hurricanes are a fact of life in Florida. I am in my seventies and do not remember how many I have been through. The next one you go through will not be as scary.
I keep saying that I want to move to Florida from New Hampshire to stay warm, but I would rather deal with a snow storm than stress out about hurricanes and tornados. Use a tarp that extends past the garage door and goes up the door - then place sand bags on the tarp. This will hold the tarp in place, and the tarp prevents seepage.
Please get a generator and a camping grill for the lanai. We've done that for every hurricane. If you space the sandbags a few inches apart you might have been able to stretch them and not much water would enter as water takes the path of least resistance. You left far too much area for the water the way you spaced the bags.
@@susanbarnett761Some stoves you can use kitchen matches to light the burners. Used to be able to light the gas ovens that way. No more. So another thing to get wooden kitchen matches. Safer than electronic or butane long or short lighters. Those long matches for candles work too.
agreed with what your saying and i know your offering great advice ....but it was Kyles 1st huricane as a home owner and didnt realy know what to do apart from sand bags etc so hes never had to go through it unlike many of nieoghbors possibly ...his knowlage on how to protect the property and himself is pretty sparse for a 1st time homeowner in florida s huricane season! ...GRANTED he should have looked things up beforhand as a newbie staying put in a hurricane BUT at least now hes learned a few things and will be better prepaired (sorry to say this but its true for the next one that comes along as they will do each season sadlly!) im just glad he got through it and he will learn from the experience and be better prepaired in future ....things are only going to get worse with (and i know some folks dont belive in this BUT) Climate change are making it worse ! even here in the UK where i live we have had flooding in areas that have never done that before with the heavy rain we have had belive it or NOT after a lot of the huricanes leave the floridas / usa shores they still have some power in them crosiing the atlantic and they reach the UK and Europe as storms still dumping record amounts of rain and gale force winds !

A future improvement would be to place underground drains to route the water from your side and back yard out to the street. Get your neighbors to do this as well. Builders should be required to do this when they build so close together. Also don't even call your insurance unless you really need to. Call your agent before you call insurance. I'm glad you made it through ok.
we had the same issue with bathtub not holding water. Get a large rubbermaid tote (or 2) and put in tub. You can even put a lid on and still shower in front part of tub if your only shower.

You should store the sand bags in your garage, as long as they were not contaminated just in case we have another storm. We live in Sarasota, and went through the eye of the storm. Thankfully we are good. Go Pack Go!
For your tub leaking the water out next time leave the drain open and place a cup upside down over it the pressure will keep it there and sealed pretty good depending on cup, hope this helps someone
As previously stated, I do claims for Allstate. No one ever takes my advice, but here goes anyway. At some point you need to check your gutter straps and make sure they are still tight. If you heard banging all night from your gutters, there is a chance the straps may have loosened. Just double check to be sure.

For the future as somebody who lived through Andrew-don’t fill up your bathtub especially if you don’t have a second floor as that is one of the best places to be during a storm. The majority of people put themselves and covered themselves with a mattress and that is how they survived Andrew.

Should fill pitchers of water in the frigid, for drinking, the melting ice is to see how frozen your food is, not how long power has been out. For next time.
Yes that is where you should go under the stairs. Please make more room in there so you will always have that space for hurricanes and or major thunderstorms that can have tornadoes. Also you do not want to be upstairs during a hurricane
If you are on city water and sewer you don’t have to worry about the toilets not working when power goes out. But if the lift stations quit working they won’t work either way. I would contact your water and sewer company to find out for sure what happens when the power goes out. 😊
Water doesn’t turn into ice in Florida so wet ground around a foundation isn’t as big a deal as places where the ground can freeze. Plus no basement for water to leak in to. Plus plus the water table is very high in Florida, so foundations are almost always wet.
Did you consider boarding your windows? Seems like none of your immediate neighbors did that either but just curious since you were so worried about this storm and were doing a lot of research around preparations. Glad you guys and your house made it through in solid shape. Also, I hope you ignore some of the extra rude comments left on here.
I saw on your friend Adam was driving his gold cart around and so much of the community was out helping clear debris . It’s a god thing to do to contribute to your community. There is great need everywhere so it takes all able bodies to pitch in. Even if it’s delivery water to those that can rake and shovel. Don’t hurt your back worse.
Insurance won’t be worth a claim. Your deductible for hurricanes is different than normal house insurance. Either 2,5 or 10 percent of house value. My folks house is 600k ish in palm coast. They have a 2% policy so damage must be over $12,000 before insurance kicks in. Their premium is high for a 2% policy, most are 5% but that makes $30,000 out of pocket first.

You should store the sand bags in your garage, as long as they were not contaminated just in case we have another storm. We live in Sarasota, and went through the eye of the storm. Thankfully we are good. Go Pack Go!
For your tub leaking the water out next time leave the drain open and place a cup upside down over it the pressure will keep it there and sealed pretty good depending on cup, hope this helps someone
I live near Port Canaveral and felt everything you did. I think to people that don’t experience it, it lookoverly dramatic. But it’s real.

As previously stated, I do claims for Allstate. No one ever takes my advice, but here goes anyway.
At some point you need to check your gutter straps and make sure they are still tight. If you heard banging all night from your gutters, there is a chance the straps may have loosened. Just double check to be sure.

Well, new developments use pumps to distribute the water, when the power is out those pumps won't work which means no water for your house, some pumps have gas generators but usually they just last a couple of hours.

Toilets are mechanical so all you'd need to do is fill the tank, no power needed. We would just bring water from the pool.

For the future as somebody who lived through Andrew-don’t fill up your bathtub especially if you don’t have a second floor as that is one of the best places to be during a storm. The majority of people put themselves and covered themselves with a mattress and that is how they survived Andrew.

About 3 Million People without Electricity in the State of Florida. There are People without running water. About 126 Tornadoes known of during HURRICANE Milton in the State of Florida. All the Coast of Florida that is South of Tampa Flooded.

You can flush without power. You need water in case there’s not water coming through city pipes

It was the scariest storm ever. Here in Saint Petersburg we are still with out power and trees are down. But we’re safe. Let’s hope Milton the last storm for a long while. Prayers to all Floridians 🙏

Yes that is where you should go under the stairs. Please make more room in there so you will always have that space for hurricanes and or major thunderstorms that can have tornadoes. Also you do not want to be upstairs during a hurricane
It looked like a typical summer thunderstorm here in Iowa when yea just chill out and do a jigsaw puzzle. lol
If you are on city water and sewer you don’t have to worry about the toilets not working when power goes out. But if the lift stations quit working they won’t work either way. I would contact your water and sewer company to find out for sure what happens when the power goes out. 😊
The water is in case you lose water, no power needed to flush a toilet. I'm not at the end yet but I pray you guys had minimal damage
You gotta get some spout extenders bud, can't have water just spilling out at the base of your structure like that.
Water doesn’t turn into ice in Florida so wet ground around a foundation isn’t as big a deal as places where the ground can freeze. Plus no basement for water to leak in to. Plus plus the water table is very high in Florida, so foundations are almost always wet.

Seems like none of your immediate neighbors did that either but just curious since you were so worried about this storm and were doing a lot of research around preparations. Do not make an insurance claim in Florida unless you have too with your car or home , rates will suffer more then you collect
I saw on your friend Adam was driving his gold cart around and so much of the community was out helping clear debris . It’s a god thing to do to contribute to your community. There is great need everywhere so it takes all able bodies to pitch in. Even if it’s delivery water to those that can rake and shovel. Don’t hurt your back worse.

Insurance won’t be worth a claim. Your deductible for hurricanes is different than normal house insurance. Either 2,5 or 10 percent of house value. My folks house is 600k ish in palm coast. They have a 2% policy so damage must be over $12,000 before insurance kicks in. Their premium is high for a 2% policy, most are 5% but that makes $30,000 out of pocket first.
