    Excellent glimpses of Iceland. I was born and raised in Reykjavík and spent a couple of summers on a farm, north of there. The Reykjavîk you filmed is a far cry from the city of my childhood-a great improvement. BTW, I cannot stand fish (love lobster, however) and I think that's a result of overexposure as a child. I have eaten whale, but it has a fishy. taste that turns me off. Lamb is quite another matter and I have yet to find any that can compare with the Icelandic. You did not mention hangikjöt, which is delicious smoked lamb. Skyr, which we used to buy in dairies, right out of a tub, can now be had in some of NYC's supermarkets, but it is expensive. It might interest you to know that beer (and owning a TV set) was illegal in Iceland when I lived there and hard liquor was only sold in state stores, but one could call a cab company at night and ask for a "fluid drive". I still speak and write Icelandic (though a bit rusty), but my mother was Danish, so I do very well in that area. I am a writer/author, but I write (mostly about jazz and blues) in English. Thank you for taking me back to the country of my birth.

      Why is their lobster so tender and delicious. Is it that they have a hard shell. Or is it that they can catch/keep smaller ones. If they served Icelandic lobster in the states, no one would buy maine lobsters. What’s the story?

    I lived in Iceland for a couple years. I'm from Oklahoma. The hotdogs... amazing. Icelandic hotdogs are awesome. The shark and brenivin/snapps (must try , terrible). They have a salt cured ham with potatoes in a sweet wheat sauce, it is one of the greatest things I have ever eaten. Great place to visit. Word of advice for single men. Do not get married there lol. I recommend visits in peak summer and new years.

    The red mayonnaise you were talking about is called kokteilsósa. It is super simple to make at home and tastes amazing! All it is is you mix ketchup and mayonnaise together. Put mayonnaise in a bowl and then add ketchup and the just blend it together. (Use more mayonnaise than ketchup) The more ketchup you use the more kind of stinging taste you get, a stronger taste. I personally use just a tiny amount more of mayonnaise than ketchup, maybe like a spoon or so. Hope this helps to make your very own kokteilsósu and enjoy it with every meal!

    • @Starkardur
      @Starkardur 7 лет назад +3

      Kokteilsósa is common elsewhere too, it's not just Icelandic. The French use it as well.

    Great advice! We were in Iceland in September. The fish is fantastic! Another general note is that going out to eat is VERY expensive...even just like a pizzeria ran the two of us up $50 canadian with one beer, coke and couple slices of pizza. We grocery shopped at Bonus and ate 60-70% of the time from those, and allowed ourselves one meal out a day. Also the coffee..very expensive - for the equivalent of a small here it was approx.$5-7 canadian.

    This makes me miss Iceland so much. I spent a week there about 3 years ago and I also spent 2 months living in Stockholm, 1 month in Copenhagen, and a week in Tromsø, Norway. Scandinavia and the entire Nordic region have been calling for me since I first started teaching myself about Iceland in high school. I think I mat move there permanently one day.

    I have a friend who is a famous cookbook author and she told us about using dried fish kind of like bread when she was young. One of the common snacks in Iceland is buttered dried fish. It sounds awful but I absolutely loved it and would usually make that as a snack at the end of the day. But then I also didn't mind hakkarl, so maybe I'm just weird.

    People have to try kjötsúpa (meat soup) It is with lamb, various of vegitables, herbs and more it is really nice. Myself is from Iceland but I have never tried brennivín and most people that I know dont like it. The sauce you are talking about is named kokteilsósa and the basic ingridients are ketchup and mayonnice. We eat it with every thing specially french fries :)

      Icelandic lobster is so good .... not rubbery like maine. They usually give you small lobster tails. They are so tender. I don’t know if it is just because they can catch smaller lobsters???? They seem to be able to catch endangered things.

      2ossy That's alright, I'm very awkward too. And i also like that they're cold so no strangers approach me for no reason

      We were hiking in the middle of nowhere in Sweden and we met some Finnish people. They started a conversation about the weather from 100 meters away. So far we had to yell.
      We were cooking diner and we thought they may come to us to talk (because there were almost no other people in the area).
      They didnt and halfway the conversation they just walked off... Bye..

    I'm going at the end of March and was totally determined to try the fermented shark but after this I'm not so sure LOL

    There's quite a bit of drinking. I think you're just better behaved than many. It's expensive, but people drink. The food is so good there! Had the best hamburg of my life there. I didn't see the fermented shark, and I wouldn't have tried it, but I did try the dried catfish which you sip in homemade butter. Not too bad as a bar snack. It wasn't very smelly at all.

      +Nubianette you made the right choice going with the catfish over the shark :)

      As a native Icelander , I would say the Icelandic lamb meat you get is probably the purest and the best you get in the world.

    Hello Mark, I was wondering which Nordic country you would recommend for two senior college students to go visit. Things to account for would be night life, price, but of course also the gorgeous views. Thanks

    • @CIubDuck
      @CIubDuck 7 лет назад

      I'm not Mark, but I live in Sweden and I've been in all Nordic countries. I'd say Norway is the best place if you have the money. The mountains and the nature is absolutely incredible, and definitely has the best views out of them all. If you like Hiking, you can travel to Rjukan and climb Gaustatoppen which takes about 3-4 hours to climb. But once you're up there you can see about 1/6th of Norway with your own eyes if the weather allows for it.
      For nightlife and cheaper living, go to Denmark. Although not as beautiful as Norway, there are a lot of nice places. My favourite place to visit while in Denmark is definitely "hvide sande". (translates to White Sand) I have a hard time explaining how it looks, but you can just google it. Alcohol is much much much cheaper in Denmark as well, the Swedish and Norwegian government controls the Alcohol in their countries and drive up the prices. Denmark doesn't do that.
      Sweden is meh. As I said before, government controlled alcohol (it's not unheard of to pay around 8 dollars for one glass of beer at the pub), everything costs a bit more than Denmark, the views aren't really amazing unless you travel to the far North. Great country to live in, maybe not so fun to visit.
      Finland is also a very lovely country, but I would not advice anyone from the US to go there unless you know Finnish. The Finnish people are very bad at English, because they also get taught Swedish in school, which means less time to learn English properly. My Father is Finnish, so he dealt with all the talking when I visited. Finding someone who spoke proper English was impossible.
      Finland is much like Sweden, just that the Swedes usually understand English much better.

      +Liebe und Widerstand thank you. In terms of vegetarian dishes i cant say. The menus were usually small in the number of options but with all the locally sourced grains and ceggies i would assume there would be.
