Honestly the output for a stock V-Max is over 200 horsepower! Not sure about the Ducati but the V-Max Has always been a beast on the streets! I want 1... Of each!
Two of my dream bikes together in one video..... I actually thought the Diavel would take the max, though to be fair, it was close enough to depend on driver skill. Whats more impressive to me is that these things still ran 10's on what looks to me like regular asphalt on stock tires.
Drag racing is a science.. and that was about as scientific as a cricket bat... launch the V-Max in second @ 5k rpm, and if it hooks up, it'll run high 9's... Ducati for posing and looking cool.. V-Max for business..
Owned both. Both are great bikes...I don't know why ppl have to bash one bike to give a thumbs up on the other one! In a straight line the Vmax is a monster but in the mountains and twisties, the Diavel leaves the Vmax for dead. In a straight line race for my life, I 'll go with mad max, in a race with curves and turns..Diave l all day. The only way to be truly satisfied is to own both. I used to run 1/4 and 1/8 mile drag racing, it takes a lot of runs to get used to a bike and then post an enviable time like these. Ignore the punters, they know nothing. Thx for the time and effort made in making the video and sharing it. Having seen both bikes in the flesh I'd buy the Ducati. 1. it's a Ducati. 2. It's cheaper than the Yamaha. 3. I can't understand the incredible price increase on the Yamaha when the original was so competitively priced and prettier never mind the Ducati.
Well a good 1985 vmax had 145 hp did the quater mile in 10.80. This vmax has 190 hp, and stock seen them in the 9's. Weight has nothing to do with it. Power to weight ratio does. The Duc is simply under powered. In that race the Duc got off the line good. The vmax layed rubber out of the hole and still won. People can say what they want about the vmax, but from its inception its always been a straight line BEAST.
@Blueyed2112 If you pause it at around 1:29 it sure "appears" as if the Ducati is well ahead of the Yamaha. And I agree, both bikes are capable of better times, should be in the mid to low 10's
@Blueyed2112 In the video the time of the day (ET + reaction), depending by road condition and riders. Our best time (ET only) are: Diavel 10"729 (211,0 km/h), V Max 10"521 ( 213,6 km/h). I don't believe under 10" is possible with the original equipment.
@rturn2mow Ok. The story is this video is born like entertainment for us and our facebook friends, not like a scientific test. But because of the title (Vmax vs Diavel) it gets a lot of views, becoming more important it is. I understand your comments, and I am going to valuate for my next official videos. Thanks for your post.
It surprised me when it lit up on the Vmax side. It looks to be ahead the whole race including the end. But there so close in performance it comes down to the riders.
Jeffrey Baker The internet may agree, however, there is definitely a production motorcycle faster than 2.8 in a 0 to 60. I'm also not sure about the 50 to 75. Boss Hoss may have something to say about that.
Nope, the official record for stock bikes is held by a 2006 GSX-R1000 at 2.35sec. The VMAX 1700 is third fastest at 2.5sec. 400m (1/4 mile) is 10.1sec for the VMAX.
@vtajoe1 Your logic would only apply if the camera position was equally spaced between both bikes and high enough off the ground to have a clear view of the road. As it is, the camera is closer to the V-Max, making the Ducati looks as if it's further down the track than the Yamaha and the racing surface is not perfectly flat so parts of it are obscured from view.
Im thinking there was a timing gate for each bike so it really don't matter exactly when you take of at the light your time starts when you leave the light not when the light turns green. That leaves it all down to power, grip, and not to reaction times on the green light.
The Yamaha spun tire for a LOOOONG time. If he had a good lock up I'm sure it would be a larger margin. Also, the Ducati twins arn't suped up Harely evo motors! they produce a lot of power.
it depends on the bike, but most of the bigger 4s have a good midrange and great high range. but a lot of that depends on the configuration and tuning. but you can always down shift. so it just depends on how you drive it. like I have said several times. I have nothing against 2cyl and own a couple and have ridden lots more, I just prefer 4cyl. for sound, efficiency, power lay out, ease of repair for i4. not v4. I hate working on my v4. I guess it just depends on what your definition of beter is
Honestly, comparing that launch of the Vmax to the others in the warm ups, it was by far the worst. The Vmax spun quite a bit making it a closer race then it should have been. I do like the Ducati, they're both awesome bikes by any standard!
@antimatterion they riders switched bikes in the actual test ofc ;) there is a new CDI for vmax letting it go over 145-150, with another exhaust= 160mph
No way the 700lb Yammie could stay with the Ducati in the twisties though. Took an hour long test ride on the Diavel and the handling is incredible. Handles almost as good as any street fighter on the market. Except for maybe the Aprilla Tuono V4. Just my opinion.
AMS Ducati Dallas raced a stock Diavel with the addition of a full Termignoni exhaust and ran a 9.980 at the Texas Motorplex during the month of June 2012.
Diavel is classified as a power cruiser. It is used as a touring bike when you get the touring gear. It is a renegade touring cruiser according to Ducati.
look up 2016 Vmax Tail of the Dragon - 300+ sharp curves in 13 miles. The Gen 2 can handle the turns just fine. Gas mileage - not so good. I love my bike though.
considering that both bike has significant engine displacement difference , i believe the Diavel had performed very well in this match....i'm guessing that the Diavel has more low end torque then Vmax due to V2 engine configuration, also the Diavel will reach it's peak power and torque in much lower rpm then the Vmax...162hp/9500rpm, 127Nm/8000rpm, couldn't find any data for the Vmax though
Both bikes are brutally fast and so close it just comes downthe to personnel taste. I just purchased a 2012 Ninja 1000. The dealership offered me a 2012 ZX10R at same price but I don't need that much power. I've had bikes over the years that would do 150 mph plus but around 120 my brain rev limiter kicks in.
This video just showed how great a Ducati is. Basically a Honda vs a Chevy. The Honda has the smaller engine but cranks out all the power to keep up with the bigger engines. Kudos to Ducati.
@@hebeb394 They are both close to 20 grand and i'd bet the potential buyer of either bases the decision on a number of factors like weight, handling,hp , service costs and brand cache as much or more than they agonize over a $1,200 price difference on what certainly is a $20,000 bike after tax and reg.
Have a 2010 Vmax, one awesome bike have had no one able to run with me! By the way I have been riding since I was 14 and I'am now 62 have had many bikes over the years and have to say the Vmax is one of the very best!!
strip the flash off the V-max and put a stage 3 supercharger in it and see if he can keep the tires on the ground. He couldn't get traction for over a half second when the tree lit green. That's a whole lot of bike and they're super comfortable for 90 mile rides. I've yet to ride a Ducati, but from the looks of them, they'd be a lot like the GSX-R, ZX-11 or FZ1 when it comes to rider positioning. What are they pushing, about 145-150hp out of the Diavel?
@vtajoe1 Wow, some people don't understand drag racing. Yes, it appears the ducati rider is ahead, but that doesn't mean he had a better Elapsed Time or MPH> The clock starts independently for both riders once they break the beam. Theorotically, one could sit at the starting line with the tree green for 10 seconds while the other guy has already crossed the finish line, then launch and run a better Elapsed time and Mph! He'd has a sucky reaction time of ten seconds, but still be faster!
There is a guy on the Diavel forum who has done 10.2 and possibly lower. The real test is in the twisties. Stock Diavel vs VMax in the canyons and around a track is what I'd like to see. If Yamaha can kick over some of the R1's agility and ground clearance to the VMax's go-fast pedigree, they'll have an even better bike. You're totally right about both being amazing bikes, though. To each his/her own.
No, power is not the only thing to win. 'cause the Ducati is in a great advantage by the less weight, you see the et are very similar. In that day one race was for the Diavel, the other for the Vmax. The difference is really small.
In drag racing everything depends on power transfer. That's why a vehicle with a lower power to weight ratio, or just lower HP can win over one that's superior on a dyno. Racing motorcycles is tricky especially on this point. That is why the Duc almost won, because the Max was spinning the tire instead of pulling on the money run.
The Diavel is bad ass but the newest version of the vmax! For a stock bike that is one scary monster! I was lucky enough to ride a buds of mine..the torque and pull is insane!
Wow, some people don't understand drag racing. yes, it appears the other rider is ahead, but that doesn't mean he had a better Elapsed Time or MPH> the clock starts independently for both riders once they break the beam. The differences are infinitesimal and rider difference could have reversed the outcome. Both fast as hell both cool as hell. What is amazing is how much faster than the OG V Max... I rode a modified OG and THAT was fast as hell LOL.
If I’m into going straight, vmax. If I like my turns and hooligan runs, diavel all day. I’ll give up an entire second just to have the handling of the diavel. End of the day, two sick bikes.
Speedytrip these dudes sucked the vmax 1700 is capable of hitting 9s and smoked the tire a 1/4 of the way through the race it would have done a much better time with a better rider
Hard to believe the bikes are that identical in quarter mile times but that's just one run with one set of riders, right? The Diavel is probably more of an all 'round performer than the quicker VMax maybe? Both bikes are kind of hard on the eyes IMO. Just kind of clumsy-looking compared to a streetfighter or sportbike style but I guess they are not so bad to ride.
That tenth of a second was based on the rider or the wheels. That race could go either way multiple times. Only way to test it properly would be a computer program that accurately depicted the bikes. Like deadliest warrior, but with bikes =D
I wondered why the new Vmax didn't post a better 1/4 mile time. I found out that the computer doesn't allow full power until the bike is moving past 30mph and then slowly turns up the power.. A quick re flash & Max will post 10 sec 1/4 mile times. With the forks compressed, the bike will easily go into the high 9's. My spotless '93 runs 9.80's with a 225 lb rider with a skinny 150mm bias ply rear tire and surprisingly few mods.
Both awesome bikes I thought about buying one of these but I decided as I wanted to keep my licence I bought a Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 SE ...which is also awesome and fast enough for me.
Ciao
Now, lets take the HP:CC ratio and see what we come up with assuming each bike adjusted CC's to match the other and maintained the same respective efficiency (ratio) in HP production. Vmax: 0.1192 x 1198= 142.8 Diavel: 0.1354 x 1679= 227.3 So assuming ratios remained the same, the Vmax with an engine the size of the Diavel would produce 142.3HP to the Diavel's 162. Inverse, Diavel having Vmax sized engine would produce 227.3HP to the Vmax's 200. So which engine design is better?
Yeah, it doesn’t work that way. The VMAX is extremely detuned. It originally put down over 300hp at the tire during design and early testing. Even the final spec is further detuned, especially in the lower gears and at WOT in the upper gears. The Diavel is tuned much more to its maximum capability, other than adding flash/tune, airbox/filter, and decat with full exhaust for optimization. It’s not even a contest, ideal peak to ideal peak per design. The Yamaha engine design is better, and by far.
The Vmax is a four cylinder, the Diavel is a twin. I don't think the Diavel did that bad considering. If it were a V4 Ducati motor.. The Vmax would be left behind in a drag race like the Yamaha Moto Gp bikes get routinely left behind on the straights to the Desmosedici in Moto gp! I love the Vmax had a Gen 1. I rode the Gen2 but ultimately went with the Diavel cause it handles considerably better. I don't just like straights, I like corners too.
Alberto Jr. Carreon I had a a Gen 1 myself. I liked it for the most part..... but I've seen the promise land... check out www.taylor-made.uk. I be seen some awesomebcustom bikes and parts.. this will blow your mind about VMax's Potential

@zorder80 @regular27
in partenza la Diavel è più veloce, nell'allungo si pareggia.
great video !! Vmax 1700 is the beast!!!
damn the Duc had a better start and the vmax still came back whooped it...I wish they weren't so expensive though, makes the rocket III desireable
The Vmax is super cheap compared to any other bike in it's class ...LOL
Its still close to 20 grand... thats expesive for a vehicle missing 2 other wheels lol
hebeb394 its not missing two wheels ... get a quad squid
Came back and whooped it? Sorry you slept through such an entertaining video.
Mr Vmax the legend
@pcracer2 imagine if the vmax hooked up right away. How bad would it have beat it then?
strip the flash off the V-max and put a stage 3 supercharger in it and see if he can keep the tires on the ground.
MotoErgoSum the 1700 one shown here actually does handle pretty well. Far better than the older 1200 models
@@trailblazer632 true. But then a covered wagon handles better than a Gen 1 Vmax.
yea the only thing that makes one bike better then another is based on which one suits you best personally
No, power is not the only thing to win. 'cause the Ducati is in a great advantage by the less weight, you see the et are very similar. In that day one race was for the Diavel, the other for the Vmax. The difference is really small.
SUPER FANTASTIC AMAZING
In drag racing everything depends on power transfer. That's why a vehicle with a lower power to weight ratio, or just lower HP can win over one that's superior on a dyno. Racing motorcycles is tricky especially on this point. That is why the Duc almost won, because the Max was spinning the tire instead of pulling on the money run.
The Diavel is bad ass but the newest version of the vmax! For a stock bike that is one scary monster! I was lucky enough to ride a buds of mine..the torque and pull is insane!
@Rafal264 yes you're very correct,

They do in this clip.
Def in some of the lines and layout of the bike
And to think a stock V65 Magna in the early 80s got in the 10s.
@bubbaboggin08 you wanted to say "worst" ?
@s4bones i think you are forgetting that Vmax weighs almost 100 kgs more than Diavel!
Yeah, 11 years ago…….today is totally different! Love my Diavel 1260 S!!
How is it different?
@@johnjones5977 have you ridden the new Diavel?
@@Burzurk1987 I have. But not sure what has changed on it over the last 10 years.
The differences are infinitesimal and rider difference could have reversed the outcome. Both fast as hell both cool as hell. What is amazing is how much faster than the OG V Max... I rode a modified OG and THAT was fast as hell LOL.
This V-Max is with ECU Race or changed Fuel Map! In Stock configuration V-Max not that fast!
If this was supposed to mean anything why didn't they do a best of 4-5 runs? This doesn't say much about either bike.
fantastic
pretty good match up.
V-max = faster, better sound, not as "sexy" of a manufacturer, less maintenance.....winner
BOB BROWN more muscular stands.
If I’m into going straight, vmax. If I like my turns and hooligan runs, diavel all day. I’ll give up an entire second just to have the handling of the diavel. End of the day, two sick bikes.
@@code23hyper44 The Vmax handles quite well, I can hit the same roads at the same speeds as my Super Duke GT
@@JRockettAudio then you are epic slow on the duke😄
Practically the same performance but the Diavel looks so much better and will probably handle much better too.
+Speedytrip It's not like I'd ride a Diavel and think "god it's too slow." I'd rather have it too. It is sexy as hell.
Speedytrip nothing tops Yamaha reliability.
Not just probably, most definitely since they are known for race track handling and winning.
Make mine an EBR, Erik Buell, 1193RX --All Smiles. ..
I don't consider a V4 against a v-twin a comparable race although the duke sure did very well with two less cylinders....
Turd Ferguson Number of cylinders is irrelevant.
Both awesome bikes I thought about buying one of these but I decided as I wanted to keep my licence I bought a Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 SE ...which is also awesome and fast enough for me.
I love the Griso. Once obtained it would never leave my stable.
Ciao
Now, lets take the HP:CC ratio and see what we come up with assuming each bike adjusted CC's to match the other and maintained the same respective efficiency (ratio) in HP production.
Vmax: 0.1192 x 1198= 142.8
Diavel: 0.1354 x 1679= 227.3
So assuming ratios remained the same, the Vmax with an engine the size of the Diavel would produce 142.3HP to the Diavel's 162.
V-MAX and V-Rod are my all time favorite bikes.
The Yamaha weights more than 100kg more than the Diavel. The fact that it still beat that thing is testament to how quick it is.

I had a a Gen 1 myself. I liked it for the most part..... but I've seen the promise land... check out www.taylor-made.uk. I be seen some awesomebcustom bikes and parts.. this will blow your mind about VMax's Potential
