I’m sure that when this was broadcast in 1959 half in England didn’t know what he was on about 😂
What a wonderful place Smithfield was. It’s replacement is an 80s aberration! At least we still have St George’s Market.. well.. the building anyway.
Love the peeks back in time.
The kids must be all in their 70s and 80s now..
I'm from the US and live about 15 miles from a town named Smithfield. I was just there on Sunday. Oddly enough it is also a good place to shop. I love these glimpses into what life was like over there compared to where I'm from. Very interesting!
Smithfield hard character right up until the early 2000s then it all started to fade away still some decent wee shops around.
Life seemed so much more simple back then….
It was because there were few electronics except for radio, and television would have just come out.
Even kitchen gadgets were done by hand.
Now you have to charge everything or have batteries to make sure you'll have it ready when you need it.
true🐱👍🏿
Rationing, shorter life expectancy, London smog, coal smoke from every chimney, malnourishment and a civil war. Simple indeed
3:22 , what’s elvis doing in Belfast and looking on the top shelf, must be staying at the heartbreak hotel
That's surprising to see hair that long in 1959.
Thought it was Sam McAughtry at first, then thought 1959 was too early for him broadcasting, but sure enough it was him.
One of nature's gentlemen, completely non-sectarian in a province riven by history. And a marvellous entertainer. The BBC had good sense, selecting him as presenter.
Was in the Smithfield market, or what passes for it, a few months ago, the first time since long before covid, perhaps decades ago.
Is there a English version
Laughing at the plebs.
