  • A visit to the Shankill Road Belfast to gain an insight into the heartland of loyalism in Northern Ireland.
    The Shankill Road stretches around two miles through West Belfast. Nicholas Coffey and the ‘7 Days’ production team met the people that live on the Shankill Road to hear their stories of life in the loyalist stronghold.
    This excerpt from the report shows various shots of the Shankill Road with voice overs of residents. The report also features a scene from the loyalist Bayardo Bar where a performer is singing
    "We’re proud to be red, white and blue."
    The Bayardo Bar is frequented by people living in the thick of the North’s bloodiest violence.
    Just a year ago five customers were machine-gunned to death in this very bar. But undaunted the music spells out a no surrender message of loyalty to Queen and kingdom from a most loyal community.
    Former MP John McQuade comments on the belief that Unionists have in “The Road” and “The Union”. Shankill residents also talk about the changes that have taken place on the road over the years. According to one resident the redevelopment of the Shankill Road has caused as much damage as the bombings and shootings.
    The Divis flats, synonymous with Republicans dominate the new housing developments on the Lower Shankill, placing two communities who have been at each others throats for generations side by side. However, one thing common to both communities are the poor living conditions. The loyalist community who have lived on the Shankill for generations are not happy about these changes.
    This episode of ‘7 Days’ was broadcast on 12 October 1976.

    The comments on this thread explain perfectly why Ireland had decades and even centuries of horrific sectarian violence. You can’t fking change the past- Irish Loyalists are part of the island of Ireland; they’re part of the Irish Story now, not the British Story. Britain isn’t interested. They’ve a right to be here. Mocking them and wishing them ill is an idiot’s game; these people are part of our country. They’re not leaving and neither should they. Ireland is their home too. Jesus, they’re even honoured in our flag. As even Ian Paisley once said “I’m an Ulsterman, but to be an Ulsterman you first need to be an Irishman”.

    • @arthurgoodness7865
      @arthurgoodness7865 Год назад

      Not sure what kind of comments you were expecting. Loyalists hate all things Irish so why would we recognise them as part of our country? Yes they live on the island of Ireland, but that is where it ends.
      These people burn our flag every 11th July. They want to be British- well then let them. We do not want those bigots associated with our country.
      Loyalists murdered innocent people in Monaghan, Dublin, Cavan, et al - they are terrorists, nothing more and nothing less.

    It's amazing to see how desolate the Shankill Road was then. Of course, it was at the height of the Troubles and Lenny Murphy and his cronies were roaming around the local shebeens and the Windsor Bar and Brown Bear. Today the Shankill Road is a much more vibrant and colourful place. But old ghosts still roam the Shankill and not all the bad boys are gone away. But still it's good to see tourists there in what was the famed Loyalist heartland 🇬🇧🔥🌻

      Was in the Shankill road in 2017, it was absolute tip. It made the falls road look nice. Little kids were throwing stones at a former British army man as he stood by plaque marking the spot where 9 people had been killed by an IRA bomb placed in a fishmongers shop, he was explain to a group of tourist what had happened in this spot and little kids no older than 12 were throwing stones at him and the tourists. Very hostile and unfriendly atmosphere compared to the falls road I must say

      The fact is Muslims and Hindus in India have major differences just like Gaels and Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland. Considering the current demographic transition of Ireland via mass non-European immigration, something openly encouraged by the supposedly ‘Nationalist’ SF btw, this ancient conflict in Ulster seems terribly shallow and antiquated by comparison.

    I am a British Citizen, live in Australia, my father returned to England in the 1970’s on holiday the 1940’s England he left had significantly changed, (he was shocked he was stuck in a time warp). These Irish people are stuck in a time warp too, they need to let go and move on, Ireland needs to progress be its own modern country/govt not like the 1920’s agreement. Australia is its own country/govt it maintains some superficial public relations connections to Britain.
