Casting a Mushroom with Molten Aluminum (Cast

- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- I've made a few of these mushroom casts and this one of the better ones that I've made so far. I've been waiting to post a video of this until I got a really good cast. This mushroom looked awesome and the casting went very well, but the back side of the mushroom was starting to decay and split on the back. It split even further during the plaster casting. Another problem was the small cracks that developed in the plaster after it was dry. I put tape around it to keep it from breaking open during aluminum casting but it wasn't cracked enough that it was coming apart. I doubt the tape was even needed, because the plaster was still very solid even after the aluminum pour. A small amount of aluminum did flow into a crack in the plaster near the top, which you can see when I break open the plaster cast. I grinded that part off later.
I set up my camera first and left it taking pictures of the mushroom while I got set up so that I could see how much it was still growing. The resulting time-lapse animation was so cool that I included it at the beginning of the video. The short animation is from pictures taken over 45 minutes, and shows that the cap is still opening fairly rapidly. The plaster pour was about 30 minutes after the last picture, and you can see in the video that it has opened even further by pour time. I also left out the long and tedious process of removing the mushroom debris from the plaster cast.
The detail captured in the cast is amazing and more than I ever expected to get using this method. The raised warts all over the cap, the gills under the cap, and even some of the ring on the stem (remnants of the veil that initially covers the gills) were all cast fairly well.
You can see more pictures of the finished cast and original mushroom at anthillart.com/...
I'll be posting all of the mushroom casts (some with videos, some not) at anthillart.com/...
my guy han solo'd a fucking mushroom

Someday a million Star Wars fans will stumble on this comment and then there will be a million likes.
As someone who is both a mushroom hunter and amateur metal caster, I must say: this is the best thing I have seen in my entire life!!! By the way, if you were wondering about the name of the species, it is most likely Amanita rubescens ;)
😉
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

I take that as a compliment ;)
I am indeed a nerd when it comes to fungus, haha.
It is indeed Amanita rubescens. :) Very cool video!

This guy's last post was a year ago. I am glad he is doing this again. You have my support Anthill Art.
Heck yea! With all the rain the fire ants must be active. Go get em!
There are some copycat anthill aluminum casters out there but none of theirs are as bright and shiny, this guy makes it look almost like it’s made out of silver.. I’m a fan

Well, he commented in another video that his partner left him because she started believing he suffers from a mental condition regarding a strange fetish towards molten aluminum. He became depressed and that's why he stopped posting.
+Anthill Art sweet I'm glad that you will be coming back! I subscribed a few months ago and was wondering if the channel was dead. I thought wrong.
Mushroom: Not so much a fun- guy now huh
Nope ;-;
Yeah it's not like I've heard that before. And u told the joke wrong.
.
Just let me have my moment 😩
Not you
Nice detail on the Amanita, especially the fins and veil. I'm surprised there were no issues from steam considering it's moisture content and lack of venting. Good job, it gives me ideas.
Could you please make an anthill with molten glass so that we can see where the ants are more populated?
In the process of digging it out it would brake
+GeeCee You can try using CA glue. It flows well and is clear and you can use it at room temp so it won't disintegrate the ants.
Thanks everyone for your contribution to this topic/idea.
***** At first I wanted this idea to work, a clear ant hill art, because I just want to know where they populate more and what they keep in those fungus shaped sections. So them disintegrating is okay, but them not disintegrating would be better.
Gosh, it sucks that the molten glass wouldn't flow fast enough.
kedwa30, Jose Hilera , I still hope that the people who do this craft would read this and take this challenge. I am not up for doing that. I don't have the right skills and tools to do this.
Maybe resin would work?
@@doubtful_seer Resin is kind of hard cause there are a lot of factors that would make it not work. Epoxy resin would probably be the best bet but excess moisture and humidity will make it really cloudy and possibly not set fully. That and organic material will start to rot and mould fairly quickly if not prepped properly... might be interesting to try but pretty much guaranteed to fail.

I just cast my first Aluminum Ingots yesterday in my new home-made Foundry.
I plan to cast anthills, but you just showed me a whole new range of options !!
I live on the edge of a forest so all types and sizes are easily found having both
grassy and forested areas at my disposal. =)
Thanks for the fun video and a new range of great options for my new Foundry !!

That mushroom looks awesome, and the purple heartwood makes a beautiful base, always loved working with it myself.
What wood was used in the platform for the mushroom cast? That's gorgeous

So, what happens to the mushroom inside? Does it ever decay? If not, have we finally found a way to preserve corpses for eternity?

I love the smell of burnt mushrooms and molten aluminum in the morning.
Mario is gonna be so pissed...
So glad you're doing videos again!
You're back
Wow!!! I think this is one of the better videos I've seen despite it being posted a few years ago. The ant hills are nice but the mushroom is beautiful. I really enjoyed the clarity of the video and the editing was spot on. Awesome job
Now that was really cool, and I like the end product a lot!
Still I miss seeing the burning ants fleeing the nest!
Wow, the cast came out REALLY good with great details given the fact that the object is so delicate. This is why I think that casting aluminium in plaster is a MUCH more rewarding technique than sand casting (even despite the cracks which seem to develop on bigger plaster objects, it probably could be fixed by sprinkling water over it as it hardens). Good job!
Plaster is much better if you bake it in an oven after it sets, to drive off the water and prevent cracking when the metal is poured.
+Michael N Yeah, especially if you keep it in the oven right until you're ready to pour ;)
In this case it was a somewhat different issue though: the plaster has already cracked way before casting, so I'm guessing the plaster wasn't hydrated enough (i.e. it didn't have enough water) while curing.
+CoolKoon Maybe - looked pretty low viscosity when they poured it though...
+Michael N Yeah, that's what I thought as well. But after such cracking I'd definitely add more water into my next batch. I don't think it'd make things worse as in case of concrete.
Awesome and BTW do you ever consider on making a video showing your collection of the anthill cast that you have done all this time BTW i'm a big fan of your art and keep it up :-D
I'm pretty sure they sell them
Whoa, I would've never in a million years thought of something like this. This was really cool, I like seeing you do stuff outside of the anthill molds!
You should have posted that on 4/20...
Lol, yeah. XD
I'm glad your back and the mushroom is so beautiful
that turned out so beautiful I wish I could get one from you
That is extraordinarily beautiful.
Why are all of your videos at night?
I like it
+TamuTamuOnigiri mostly that's when I have time to do it, but I do like how the videos look and sound at night
Anthill Art I prefer night time to daytime, it's more relaxing, so your videos are extra relaxing
+Anthill Art oh my God that is amazing
I think the split adds to the beauty of the thing.
Nice work. Bronze would look better/more natural, IMO. Would that be harder than casting aluminium?
+PsyMongazoid yeah, it's a little more difficult to melt and cast bronze but I'm going to try it soon
I did now expect it to work so well without venting holes... GREAT JOB!
Mario gonna be getting a new power soon...
weed?
+TheDerpiestSquid ! what is the video about?
Defiant_Elements some sort of a future weed ayy lmao
yes
Metal Mario. As seen in super smash bros.
I like the way you did this cast & pour. If you want less cracks or sturdier plaster mold you can add silica flour to resist heat and fiberglass bits to add structure to plaster mix.
When i cast glass objects the plaster mix has some silica flour in it that helps prevent cracking. You can buy premix plaster from a glass supplier. Another reason plaster cracks is water content inside. You can dry in oven at 190f or sun dry over few days ... If plaster cool to touch that means it still has water inside. You could burn out mushroom at higher temps and pour into void ... Or keep doing your thing, which works!
back from the haitus I see
Breathtaking as always
1:53 There is a Vein on that...... nevermind ;)
About time, good to see more art being made! Not only do they look good, but the videos are just as great and interesting :)

+HeadLocks They're such _fun-guys_!
That is beautiful.

first ants and now innocent muchrooms.. shame on you!
ffs its just a plant jeez
+Piotr Zdunski a poison mushroom
+Kneil Rodier Laco No it isn't!! LOL! Mushrooms aren't plants bro, they're fungi. Different organism class.
as a matter of fact this mushroom is not poisonous :)
that's how it starts... first mushrooms.. then cats and dogs.. and lions

Glad you're making videos again. 😊 Keep it up!
that thing looks sick, great video man:D
YES YOURE BACK
was the investment and the organic cooked off in a kiln? or did you simply pour the al on the mushroom
That's creative. Looking forward to more videos.
Do you sell your artwork and if yes then do you ship globally?
