      I hadn't imagined it would be difficult to burn the combs at that temperature, even as moist as they are. You know, since it's molten metal? @NefariousTropy 4 года назад +25

      @@AnthillArt Actually they do remove dirt from the hole and fly it several yards away from the nest site before dropping it. Ground nesting wasps are honestly incredible. In areas with rockier soil, its not uncommon for yellowjacket nests to have a small pile of gravel sitting at the bottom from where they excavated out everything they could lift.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 4 года назад +18

      @@AnthillArt There are several RUclips channels that focus on wasps and hornets, two of the more prominent being Hornet King and Wasp Hunter, and their videos are quite educational and informative about how wasp and hornet nests are built. Hornet King taught me that ground nesting yellowjackets do in fact dig out the holes to expand their nests, but you are correct in that they don't start the holes, they just move in and expand a pre-existing chamber. Most often they take over ant colonies or animal burrows but they've been known to use rotted out roots too - I know that one personally as 15 years ago I had to deal with a ground nest in an oak rootball that I didn't even know was under my lawn.
