Lung "strength" is usually determined by not holding you breath but expelling air. There is the ball-float test that is commonly used where you try to keep a foam ball afloat on your breath in a cylinder for as long as possible. Holding you breath for long periods of time is usually an indicator of your body's resistance to high build up of CO2 in your blood and not neccesarily your lung strength. This is more of test of your mental strength or pain resistance as well as conscious control of your heart rate.
That explains why I did so good, cause people say I have good pain tolerance and and my mind is probably scarred enough to have good mental strength aswell😅
I made it to 10 while breathing the whole time. Been breathing for 31 years, practically involuntary at this point. Update: It's been 32 years now, still going strong. Keep on breathing people!

My grandpa is still holding his breath for 6 years straight. What a legend Edit July 1st 2023: What i meant is that he's dead. He basically died from liver cancer (August 24, 2016). RIP Grandpa
Holding your breath doesn't measure how "strong" your lungs are, it measures how well you can focus and relax. If you can lower your heartbeat, you can hold your breath longer.
I'm proud to have reached to number 3, I've had both lungs collapse at different times and developed pneumonia so being able to hold my breath past 2 makes me beyond happy.
As a respiratory therapist I will say this has far less to do with pulmonary capacity and more to do with cardiac health. The lower the resting heart rate, the easier it is for one to hold his breath.
I found 10 easy but my resting is about 65. I was under the assumption 65 is average, so is 10 actually "pretty good" or is it actually exceptional? I have no idea how long the average person can hold their breath tbh. My fitbit says my cardio health is "average" for my age with that vo2 thing.
I got to 5 and I'm very proud of that. I suffered from pulmonary embolisms which for those that do not know what that is, it is a dangerous blood clot in your lung/lungs, and I've had 3 of them now. It took a while for me to be able to hold my breath even for a little bit and that's sad because I loved to sing, it was my dream, and not being able to hold notes like i used to before this all happened just saddened me, but now I'm able to hold my breath and keep it in for a good minute. I'm proud of myself, I've come a long way. I'm also able to sing again! 😊
I got to 5 as well. I am Also surprised. Having health complications and chest pains, I didn’t think I’d make it. Then again I guess I hold my breath longer when I’m not using my Bipap machine at night 😂😂😂
I've quit vaping after months of being addicted and I'm trying to get healthy again. I'm happy to say I was able to reach 4. I think my lungs are healing themselves
👍🏾do you also workout? The lungs can heal but only to an extent of what they used to be. 80-85%. Years of smoke inhalation is definitely harder to recover from since the overtime damage. I don’t know how long you’ve been smoking but thankfully you stop. The first thing doctors recommend to help your lungs get better is to stop smoking next is cardiovascular exercises to strengthen the heart and lungs again and make them stronger than what they previously were
Been smoking cigarettes amongst other things including vaping for 26 years and did it for the bonus 11 round and could have went three more at least.. I thought I was out of shape.. you need to get to the gym or go for a walk or somthing
If people quit and are lucky to not have picked up any serious illness or diseases then your lungs can return to peak condition. Some aren’t so lucky and have to take medication n treatments just to help their lungs stay functioning but because they caught something it’s only prolonging the disease meaning giving you extra years before the disease catches up and the medication no longer works.
These types of diseases are emphysema, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer and COPD. For some reason it’s harder for for them to recover past these diseases unlike other organs. The lungs are sensitive to genetic change in the dna these chemicals cause which is why I think it’s harder to rid these awful diseases. Asthma is another but it’s different from the others i just named
Unlike the others, Asthma doesn’t damage your lungs slowly overtime but just make’s your lungs extremely sensitive to bronchitis(inflammation n constriction of the aveoli) which all the diseases have in common. That’s the reason why it’s dangerous because how it makes your lung more vulnerable to exacerbation deadly lung diseases. Sadly i have asthma and i just try to stay away from foreign chemicals that can cause me to have an attack. I can live a pretty normal life as long I don’t hurt my lungs
If you can make it to 10 even if you hyperventilate, as soon as it gets to 10 and you’re about to release the air from your lungs. Try your best to breathe the air out slowly count 8 seconds while you breathe the air out slowly, it will act like a form of meditation and you’ll feel really relaxed and might even feel a bit of a natural high, from relaxation. Plus it will stop the hyperventilation at the end.
I made it to 10... I use deep breathing techniques while I go on a jog or for a swim. This helped build my lung capacity. I'm just 18 though sooo maybe it's because I'm in the springtime of my youth
@@forefatherofmankind3305 you referring to Islam as a "cult" (negative annotations are attached to the word) is rather demeaning but who are you to care about what another human feels because of what you say, right? Since you asked a question about whether internet is Haram or not I will answer it gracefully. Internet is like a knife. Using it is akin to using a knife. You can use a knife to cut vegetables or meat or any other foodstuffs. These are good uses of a knife. But then we know a knife can be used as a weapon that can hurt oneself or others. That's a bad use of knife. It is not haram to use a knife for good things but it is haram to use a knife for bad things. Similarly, you can use internet to gain knowledge and spread it too and for entertainment purposes as well. Depending on what you do on the internet, if Allah does not prohibit the action, then it is not haram to use the internet in Islam.
Nice do that at least once a week and your time will improve also spend some time in higher altitudes if you can. I can hold my breath for 2+ minutes at 51 years old.
Made it to 10 but I did start struggling at 8 or 9. I am a heavy smoker (pack a day type) and do very little exercise. You can hold your breath a lot longer than a lot of people think, I did a couple of quick breaths and then held a big one. When you start craving air it is actually your body telling you to get rid of the co2, you can ignore that feeling for some time.
Oddly enough doing those quick couple of breaths hurts how long you'll be able to hold. Try again next time when you're calm and take one long breath and see how long you hold it then
@@VapidFartactually while true hyperventilation does hurt because of quickening heart rate it can also help by bringing up the blood oxygen and removing the co2 from the system. This basically means that you are able to hold longer, if you can calm yourself quick
Started it the day I tested positive. Couldn't do an easy one. NOW a month after testing negative, I can do an impressive 9. Pls keep monitoring your levels.
Um, i am negative and i hardly made it to 2, I don't smoke, I don't have asthma, and i don't have a lung problem in general. It just depends on every person.
@@skf9-gse maybe you didn’t take a deep breath before you started the video .. this works to some extend .. checking how long you can hold your breath tests your lung capacity .. it does depend on person to person IF they smoke or have any other issues with the lungs .. else a good pair of lugs with enough air taken in at the beginning should be able to make it at least to a 5 .
@@ruchipeiris1247 i did take a deep breath before i held my breath. And I don't smoke ot have a lung disease. Not saying that the test is fake or something, just saying that it really does depend on the person. And im not even old lol.
As a former smoker now vaper with asthma and bronchitis since birth I managed to get 5, but also made me realize that holding my breath doesn't really have a lot to do with lung strength since I'm pretty sure you can practice this even with the worst lungs. EDIT: after a day I did it 2 times more because I had nothing better to do, the second time I got to 8 and the third time I got 10. I actually got to 10 easier than I got to 5 the first time.
What are your symptoms of asthma and bronchitis. I ask because I also have asthma but wondering if I might have bronchitis too. I'm a former smoker and I currently do vape.
You say that holding your breath doesn't have anything to do with lung strength, and then you say you can practice this. But what do you think practicing does? IT STRENGTHENS YOUR LUNGS. As does every cardiovascular activity
my longest was 3:45 prepping by doing 3 deep inhales and exhales only. its all in the mindset. slight discomfort but if you can bypass that anyone can go for multiple minutes unless they have bad lungs. ive smoked pot and cigs for nearly 2 decades and still have strong lungs although ive recently quit both
it's based on carbon dioxide levels, that's why the deep breaths helped you (they got rid of a lot of the carbon dioxide) so it took longer for you to reach the levels that force you to take a breath. It is really mindset based though as you say, you can actually hold it for way longer than you think. Congrats on quitting bro!
That’s really interesting because anesthesia formulas say you should have desaturated after just one minute. You don’t continue much past desat if you are living
@@whyareyoulookinghere9135 That is with no oxygen, when you hold your breath your lungs are full of oxygen, the amount of time you can hold your breath is dependant on how well your lungs circulate that oxygen to last longer. World record for breath held is 24 minutes.
@@NSAhitLIST also special breathing techniques for swimming help too, interesting thing is that after you reach certain dept your oxygen usage decreases, I tested it in croatia where I was under water for 7 minutes, and I'm not that amazing swimmer as just basic sitting hold for me is 2 min and 30 sec, tested now with a phone timer without preparation, so I guess something like 3 min with some prep/tryhard hold, overall its funny fealing as the moment you reach certain dept you feal yourself needing less and less oxygen, to the point of it fealing as if u could breathe in the water, just like in the dreams, also important thing is meditation/ just turning your brain of but that's something I personally find impossible. Although it helps a lot, my personal record was after I got under water essentially felt asleep and took a large breath from the oxygen bottle was something around 10 min, but then again large pressure meant I actually got more oxygen in my lungs, then me not using anny of it in my muscles and also reducing the oxygen usage of my brain to the maximum I can reach, so essentially with all those things like 70% of humans could reach it or more, again I'm a casual swimmer and 2.30 min is not a lot considering my friends can essentially swim for that time under water...
@@redacted5937 theres a point where youll pass out but willpower up to a much higher threshold than most people ever reach is a fact. Look up how long it takes for the average person to pass put from lack of oxygen, an then look up how long the average person willingly hold they breath for, or even hoe long you do.
To test your lungs strength you need to blow out air under resistance . There's a contraption my dad used to use to increase his lungs performance, you blew into it and a little ball would rise , you had to keep it floating for as long as you can . Works good actually .
Keep in mind that holding your breath is more about teaching your body not to be worried about the CO2 in your lungs rather than the lack of new air coming in. That’s why if you hold your breath for as long as you can and then breath it all out you can go for longer.
Reached solid 10. Best try is to have a focused mind and not use the oxygen in your body to much in one go. Move as less as possible and try to focus yourself on a spot and calm your mind. This may not test your strength from your lungs, but it indeed tests how focused and calm you can get your body to be
I made it to 9 and stopped since it's been so long since I've actually done this haha. The free diving technique is to inhale a huge breath of fresh air and then swallow air a few times as much as you can to literally increase the total oxygen and help increase hold time.
I made it to 8! i probably could've gone longer but i was getting bored 😅 I'm pretty happy with 8 though considering I gave up singing a long time ago I'm gonna have my dad try this and see how well he does he played bagpipes for over 40 years and is a swimmer!

if we are talking the strenght of your lungs then the best way is with a machine (i cant remeber the name) which uses pure O2 and forces you to breath in and out to move a heavy lid that is over some water, the resutls are then put onto a graph which you can use to calulate lung volumes. then their is a small plastic device you can use to measure the force you release with
Important fact: The time you are able to hold your breathing depends on the level of energy / activity you are making. If you are completely steady, not talking or anything ... You may be able to get better results, though just raising your hand can give you a 10 sec less ... Using this I could do it till 15 (repeating the vid) But just waking I barely made it to 5 ...
Thats true, i didn't move at all and was comfy, got 15, then i saw your comment, tried dancing hard and doing, got only 10 and it was already difficult
Made it to ten. Just took a small breath and started. I have multiple lung nodules in both lungs but was a swimmer most of my life. I'm 54 now and was able to swim 100m underwater without a problem. I'm actually surprised I was able to do this well... cheers!!!🍺🇺🇸
@Levi Floyd they probably use fins- (?) Im at 50m max, keeping on the floor without weight belt and without fins always struggling to stay close at the floor as the body keep trying being buoyant thus usually at 25m max. If i let go and let the water do its thingy i could go 50m. And for this test i could do 15 count no sweat. Like purchasing google so i can see path underwater actually improved my average dive like from 25m to 40m just because i no longer have to worry about chlorine on my eyes or getting my head bumped. So i thought having fins could boost you more further
How old are you? Like elderly sisters sharing a homestead in rocking chairs? I made it to 6 and I'm 51f but I didn't prepare and I'm reclining. If I did tricks I could probably do more.
Made it to 10. 1. Take like 10 DEEP breaths before you do it (fast deep breaths try get as much oxygen in body) 2. Before u hit play make sure you breathe in as much as u can just before your lungs hurt 3. During the breath hold don't move at all just relax 4. Near the end when u feel like breathing just breathe the remaining c02 in your lungs again and again (with your mouth closed obviously) THIS IS JUST MY ADVICE I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL
I just got to say if you need to take 10 deep breaths to even attempt this that's just f****** sad. I smoke weed every single day for bpd and have for over a year. I just saw this video and made it past 10:00 I even made it past the entire video and waited 30 seconds and it wasn't even a struggle for me I could have probably done this whole video three times with zero preparation at all.
btw, using this technique will only help you get a better score, which in this case doesn't necessarily mean your lungs are strong since you prepared for it. Don't look for techniques, just do the thing.
Not gonna lie. I was about to just give in after 5, but continued anyway. Pushed myself to 10...motivation goes a long way, people. Don't give in to discomfort or else you'll give in much earlier than you're capable of.

I quit smoking because of how scared I am of diagnosing lungs problem, very proud that I still manage to make it until 10. It's been a week since I quit but it's the biggest milestone I've ever achieved
I made it to 10 but it was at 8 where my body started to force the breathing motion, but I managed to keep my nose and mouth shut. I felt really proud, to see the morals and principles i followed such as never smoking nor drinking actually paying off.

I was able to hold my breath for nearly seven minutes by laying face down in my tub in just concentrating on my heartbeat. It’s amazing what the human body can do. Thx for inspiring me to test myself. P.S., I’ve been running cross country since I could run.
When I was a kid, I used to do the same thing in the bathtub or pool. It makes you feel like you’re a baby in the womb again, and it’s pretty interesting the zen state your mind enters. It has to be a form of meditation or something, it’s so effective in getting you into that zone. Focusing on the heartbeat is the key from my experience as well. It’s like we have full control of our heart and can direct and manage where our oxygenated blood goes to in a deliberate and efficient manner to prolong the holding of breath. So surprised I saw someone else describe exactly what I used to do. Thanks for the comment!

Practice Wim Hof breathing meditation, it is different as you hyper oxygenate your blood before holding your breath but I can get to 1:50-2:00 most sets! Try to improve and get further!💪🏻 see how long you can hold your breath after 30 quick deep breaths, you’ll be surprised and also in your 2nd set or 3rd you’ll feel kind of lightheaded, but this is nothing to worry about, it’s a very relaxing feeling and also a meditation, have fun you can follow a RUclips video or as I prefer to just put on some chill music and set my own pace for my breath and then in my 30th exhale hit a timer, close my eyes and try to focus on something other than my breath.💪🏻🙌🏻🔥
Its not about holding your breath. Playing an instrument helped me learn to control my breathing and take more air into my lungs. I'll use a metronome at 60bpm and breathe in for 4 beats, out for 4(repeated 3 times) Then in for 4, out for 8. Honestly everyone should do breathing exercises lol
A trick to hold breath for a long time Take quick breath in and out for 15times Soon take deeeeeepp breath in out slowly for 5 times,at the 6th time take and hold the breath. That's it
Made it to 8. Pretty good, as I get asthma sometimes, and can't push myself TOO hard while running/exercising or my chest will close up. Maybe it's due to all the yoga/deep breathing routine I've been doing the last few years. EDIT: Tried again after a few deep breathes before starting and I actually made it PAST 10 (around 11).
Breathing is a good thing when meditating just breath all will become clear or smoke one meditate and sometimes forget that you need air, space,or time.
A quick breathing exercise got 15 pretty easily been smoking for a few years and had covid 3 times. It's all about using as little energy as possible and slowly letting a little air out after every 5 or so
10 is fairly easy. But try to hold it without deep breath, after you exhale fully - start the clock. Also, don’t try to push too far when the urge to breathe is too strong. This way you test the actual health of your body, not just the lungs. 40 sec + means you are healthy.
@@jiriboudik9210 thing is, this test is easy to cheat. If you take several deep breaths before holding, you over oxygenate your body and then it’s easy to hold your breath even for 2 min +. The proper medical test is to breathe normally for a min, no deep breathing. Then exhale and start holding. Also, at the end will power can mess up the results by greatly extending the hold. So it’s best to stop when the urge to breathe is getting strong.
This is not a lung test. For testing lung you should send out air from mouth on a certain rate of pressure. This test may be depend on how much oxygen is solved in the blood.
I did a lung test like that where u had to balance a ball and the pressure thing on the side rises. When I did it I got really close to the top but was just short are my lungs okay?
With bronchiectasis and TB scarring I made it to 11. I'm used to low O₂ + high CO₂ in my bloodstream, and the "screaming for oxygen" feeling is largely due to your brain thinking it needs more O₂ when in fact it just wants to clear out CO₂ to make room for the O₂ that's till in your lungs. Practice holding your breath after breathing out and this test is easy to beat.
Yeah when I swam competitively, while doing anaerobic exercise you’re always supposed to blow bubbles underwater and you can go way longer on a single lungful.
@@ShiShawPocketSand it's only about willpower because you can see the finish line. A better test would have ypu just hold your breathe till you cant no more and then analyze the results. Hope makes us stronger.
@Bloody Hell That's called visualization. If you can visualize yourself at the finish line then it just becomes a matter of getting there, and that's the easy part. The hard part is figuring out how to improve from there, and learning to hold under stress, like underwater.
Doctors for decades: smoking is strongly linked to lung cancer, emphysema, and COPD. Smokers: I held my breath for over a minute, so I'm pretty healthy.

I'm a student nurse in the U.S, and let me tell you that this of course, doesn't measure your lung strength, what could measure your lung strength and what we measure to assess this could be how well you can blow, take deep breaths, your breath after doing a workout depending on the intensity etc, holding your breath has more to do with concentration and low heart rate, even smokers can do this with enough focus.
On the other hand, as a heavy smoker for 9 years, I made it to 8 before I almost passed out. Imagine if I didn't, I would have had at least 12. DON'T SMOKE, KIDS!

As a respiratory therapist I will say this has far less to do with pulmonary capacity and more to do with cardiac health. The lower the resting heart rate, the easier it is for one to hold his breath.

Maybe that's why I've always been able to hold my breath way longer than all my friends. Resting heart rate is 42-45. Doing this to 10 is easy.
I found 10 easy but my resting is about 65. I was under the assumption 65 is average, so is 10 actually "pretty good" or is it actually exceptional? I have no idea how long the average person can hold their breath tbh. My fitbit says my cardio health is "average" for my age with that vo2 thing.

Internet is like a knife. Using it is akin to using a knife. You can use a knife to cut vegetables or meat or any other foodstuffs. These are good uses of a knife. But then we know a knife can be used as a weapon that can hurt oneself or others. That's a bad use of knife.
Try again next time when you're calm and take one long breath and see how long you hold it then

it's based on carbon dioxide levels, that's why the deep breaths helped you (they got rid of a lot of the carbon dioxide) so it took longer for you to reach the levels that force you to take a breath. It is really mindset based though as you say, you can actually hold it for way longer than you think. Congrats on quitting bro!

It's good exercise to hold your breath. But doing it underwater is a bad idea.
Please people don't do it again, if you accidentally fall unconscious while doing this you can drown
@Yegor Andreevich all you haters man if he wants to drown himself let him do it its his God given right!

I haven't been submerged in over 2 months and haven't really trained at all in 10 years. I made it to 11 and could probably make it to 13 or 14 if I wanted.

I’m 47 years of age, eat Keto diet with intermittent fasting, take a load of supplements including D3/K2 and NAC. I’ve recently started doing breathing exercises (research Gary Brecka) and can currently hold my breath for 2 mins, aiming to keep building that up to my next target of 3 mins.

I do the Wim Hof method so this was really easy haha. It's all about relaxing yourself and slowing down your heartbeat. My maximum breath hold is at 3:40 minutes currently when I do the method. Without the method I can hold it for much less though, quite impressive how effective it is!
Max I got was 6. The comments leave me breathless.

I made it to 10 at the first time. I took a deep breath before start it. Thank God for having this air come in and out of my lungs. Lord bless you all.
We're actually allergic to air. That's why we die because our body can only withstand a certain amount of air. Its a slow death and Assuming there was no other cause like heart attack etc.

Hold the breath following a deep one or just start holding it by inhaling breaths of normal depth?
Truly an amazing test, I’m trying very hard to pass this and went further, my family member is impressed and called ambulance to show off my holding breath ability, the doctor is also impressed and gave me multiple two hand high fives at my chest, I started to breath again and everyone is very happy, now… how do I pay for the medical bill I got myself into

Bull shit
This isn't so much a test of lung strength. More of a CO2 tolerance/lack of oxygen tolerance. If you do cardio it will increase.
2 pack a day & 1 oz a day smoker for over a decade, haven’t taken care of myself in a hot minute so been over 2 years since i last exercised, & since I quit smoking I’ve been heavily vaping for the last 5 years. got up to 8
This is something you can train. Even some smokers that have been training to hold their breath since childhood can do it for a minute or so
Practice Wim Hof breathing meditation, it is different as you hyper oxygenate your blood before holding your breath but I can get to 1:50-2:00 most sets!

I was a tuba player in high school 8 years ago, I'm really proud that my constant breathing practice has helped keep my lungs strong.
What kinds of things do you do to practice holding your breath?
I smoke and made it past 10 bro. This is bullshit
Keep that up. You’ll thank yourself for it.
Ok

A trick to hold breath for a long time
Take quick breath in and out for 15times
Soon take deeeeeepp breath in out slowly for 5 times,at the 6th time take and hold the breath.
That's it
This worked wonders I’m not even joking. It’s like doing the wim hof breathing technique
Me too bro
I had asthma but on my first try I got to 10
A quick breathing exercise got 15 pretty easily been smoking for a few years and had covid 3 times. It's all about using as little energy as possible and slowly letting a little air out after every 5 or so
@@hitecgamer3199 you realise you have to block your nose as well. Otherwise you still breathe even if you aren’t trying to or see it happening

Third attempt: was 10
Mine was,
1st: 8
2nd: 8
3rd: 5
4th 10
10 is fairly easy. But try to hold it without deep breath, after you exhale fully - start the clock. Also, don’t try to push too far when the urge to breathe is too strong. This way you test the actual health of your body, not just the lungs. 40 sec + means you are healthy.
great Challenge, i was able to do it for the whole video, but it was extremelly challenging. What exactly does this indicate? Why is it a better test?
@@jiriboudik9210 thing is, this test is easy to cheat. If you take several deep breaths before holding, you over oxygenate your body and then it’s easy to hold your breath even for 2 min +. The proper medical test is to breathe normally for a min, no deep breathing. Then exhale and start holding. Also, at the end will power can mess up the results by greatly extending the hold. So it’s best to stop when the urge to breathe is getting strong.
Uncomfortable at 8, panicking at 9 😂 but got to 10 💪
Me too
This is not a lung test.
I died while holding my breath for 2 minutes but it was worth it.
Greetings from Heaven 🍻
I started on Christmas Day and still going strong, have I set some kind of record? Pretty sure I've lost my job by now though.
I took a big breath in and made it to 11. I don't think that matters. It's mostly willpower.
The hard part is figuring out how to improve from there, and learning to hold under stress, like underwater.
thanks for the bible of symptoms lol
Doctors for decades: smoking is strongly linked to lung cancer, emphysema, and COPD.
Smokers: I held my breath for over a minute, so I'm pretty healthy.

I'm a student nurse in the U.S, and let me tell you that this of course, doesn't measure your lung strength, what could measure your lung strength and what we measure to assess this could be how well you can blow, take deep breaths, your breath after doing a workout depending on the intensity etc, holding your breath has more to do with concentration and low heart rate, even smokers can do this with enough focus.
my grandpa has been doing this for 48 hours now and he’s even started getting really bad oder and his body is stiff, what an absolute legend.
