  • We followed 5,000m world champion, 2-mile world record holder and Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen as he crushed a track session at altitude in Flagstaff, Arizona just over two weeks ahead of his season opener and title defense in the Bowerman Mile at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic.
Dive into the COROS data behind the training session as Ingebrigtsen clicked off 12x400m (60 seconds rest) and 10x200m (200m jog rest, approximately 90 seconds) at Flagstaff High School. The workout takes place at an altitude of 6,932 feet.

At the pace he was running he needed more than 400 meters to raise his heart rate to the level it can reach at such pace. If he ran 800 meter repeats at the same pace, each repeat would probably end with a higher heart rate.

That's an insane workout at sea level, never mind at Flag. I can't imagine he's anywhere near recovered after only a minute on those 400s. A workout like that at altitude is downright panic inducing as you try to catch your breath. I guess that's why he's the Olympic champion. In any case, really cool to see Jakob on WW and to get this level of insight into his training.

By the off chance this will be seen by the man himself, I just want to say thank you for being my idol for the last 7 years. When I didn’t want to go out and put in the work you were my motivation and when I almost walked away from the sport completely, you and your family were a reason I didn’t give up because I too have that dream to be the best one day. I thought this summer I would’ve had the chance to finally meet you and tell you in person at the 1500 final this summer in Paris but things didn’t work out as I had thought but you know I’m very happy you’re still striving to be the best and hopefully when you’re time is done I’ll be the one to take over the world. I would give up my life here in the US and go to Sandnes to train with you guys so I have the chance to be the best in history but to also learn more about the discipline. People tell me I’m crazy that I’m rooting for you and not the team USA members but it’s just because youre a big reason I believe in myself even if everyone thinks I’m crazy for the way I think but I truly believe in myself that I will make it one day and make my dreams come true! Keep up the great work and I can’t wait to see you rock this season. I believe in you and am one of your biggest supporters all the way!!! Thank you for everything !

Yep Time (of lap) indicates the external physical load, and blood lactate indicates the internal physiological load, those parameters are important for obtein the optimal load session... especially some internal load current parameter.
Another important factor, Jakob is using a potentiometer that is neither Stryd nor Run Scribe 20:25 ... Another way to collect external load data (watts). In addition, it uses a brachial heart rate monitor.
Science Exercise = Big Data Exercise, nothing is random.
