Beeswax alone tends to crack. The pitch makes it more flexible. It would probably work but may be a little more frustrating. Beeswax shrinks when it cools and that causes it to break away from a surface or crack if it is adhered to the surface well.
to clarify you can Either use the pine rosin and bees wax mixture as the final stuff you put inside the mug to keep it watertight OR you can use the epoxy SO it is an either or and both work the same??
Yes, you can use either of them to line the mug. The epoxy will be more resistant to heat so it is possible to use the mug for hot drinks like coffee. I still don't suggest hot drinks because the hotter the liquid the more it will soften the waxed leather.
I’ve been watching your braiding videos and had some questions regarding leather sourcing. I’ve been tinkering with Turks heads using paracord and hard laid cord and would like to venture into leather. I know where to purchase leather lace but not tanned hides such as you use in your videos. Donald
I purchased some leather from Tandy leather because they have a store close to me. Most of the leather I cut into lace I have been ordering from Waterhouse leather. Another vendor I order from regularly is Springfield Leather company in Springfield Missouri. @springfieldleather here on RUclips. I have used calf and kip hides from them and they even carry kangaroo which is the super premium leather for cutting lace.
Do you sell patterns for making the Jack mug? I'm interested. Also is there a reason that I can't hand tool the exterior of mug? Thank you very much for video.I will be watching for more leather videos should you put them out.
You can tool the leather. In the past I have carved several of them. You may lose some of the sharpness of the impressions when you shape the mug and when you stuff it with the wax. To prevent some of that you can carve "in the round" which is after shaping with the leather still on the form, but that is difficult to do.
I have a listing on my Etsy shop that is for both the patterns and a resin cast form to shape the mug. bransonsgeneralstore.etsy.com/listing/1626056629/pattern-and-form-to-make-leather-mugs
Not sure. I have not worked with it. I would first check to see if it is safe. I don't know what solvents are in it. It was used to seal boats and canoes, so it would be watertight, I am just not sure if it would be good to have in contact with something you are drinking.
It's called a stitching groover. It cuts a shallow channel in the leather so the stitches are set down into the surface. That helps the stitches last longer because the thread is not as exposed to wear.
I have a Cobra class 4. The bottom of the mug is big enough that the end of the sewing arm fits inside. The bottom is shaped deep enough to allow for the stitches to be where they need to be. When I originally designed this pattern I had a Tippmann Boss and it fit the same way.
Whoa. I would have thought it would need to be deeper. Thank you. I would like to make a jack mug one day when I replace the class 3 I sold.@@bransonsgeneralstore
The pattern does have a curve to it. It has been a long time since I drew it up. If I am remembering correctly I figured out the height of a cone that would have the diameter of the base and the diameter of the top of the mug at the right height. Then I used a piece of string the height of the cone with one end taped to the table and a loop in the other end for the pencil to mark the curves.
It is according to the label. As long as you follow the instructions and mix it right so it cures properly. The Envirotex epoxy I used in the past worked better for me and is hailed as FDA compliant on their website. I can also buy it at a local hardware store.
This is probably one the the most skilled leather workers on RUclips but sadly people care more about the sound it makes when it hits the table
Put the pattern and the pvc mold as a bundle and Id definitely pick it up! Even if not totally period accurate these would be great for ren and sca!

Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Now that's a really cool project!✌🏻
Thanks!
I just ordered the set. I Can’t wait! I enjoy your videos.
Thank you for your support!
Bonito trabajo
Is it possible to just use beeswax to seal it, or are the brewers pitch/epoxy necessary? I don't expect to be using it extensively
Beeswax alone tends to crack. The pitch makes it more flexible. It would probably work but may be a little more frustrating. Beeswax shrinks when it cools and that causes it to break away from a surface or crack if it is adhered to the surface well.
I've sealed leather canteens with beeswax, thorough temp and excess wax control are key

Why dont you deliver to the uk ?
Because we've been burned before with people refusing delivery and having to pay to get the item shipped back.
Can you use pine tar to seal the leather it’s black shiny black ,just wondering

What is that tool called that you marked the stitch line with?
It's called a stitching groover. It cuts a shallow channel in the leather so the stitches are set down into the surface. That helps the stitches last longer because the thread is not as exposed to wear.
What machine and setup did you use to sew the bottom? I'd be curious as to how you got into that edge. Pattern?

I am planning on selling the patterns and resin castings of the forms in my Etsy shop. Just don't have them ready yet.

Im curious is the leather cut straight or curved before you sew it closed?

@bransonsgeneralstore thank you I appreciate your help
What weight of leather please ?
Saddle skirting. About 12 oz. I have made them out of 13-15oz all the way down to about 10 oz.
Is the epoxy food grade?
It is according to the label. As long as you follow the instructions and mix it right so it cures properly. The Envirotex epoxy I used in the past worked better for me and is hailed as FDA compliant on their website. I can also buy it at a local hardware store.
