@@DANIELMILNOR505 I agree when you see a clear drone shot in a video, you think "Ah a drone shot" and you get pulled out of whatever you are watching. But it has it uses. Great long dose of milnor. Out of this episode i can come up with at least 10 new questions. It should be a Answers and questions. Thanks , plenty to think about as usual. Frank
Always a ball your Q&A sessions. Really looking forward to your Antarctica trip. If you want a good read, have a look at 'The Worst Journey in the world' by Apsley Cherry-Garrard, its the epic story of Scott's expedition to the South Pole, from which it took Apsley a long time to recover from.
Question 11...wow you answered my sort of question. Thanks Dan. Ok here's the follow up question, celebrity photography to one side, is the 'above the line' current advertising photography world going to be superseded by AI ??
If you decide to go with the digital zine idea, please consider having an app developed for it or otherwise publish in a format that suits photography as a primary media source. Would love to be able to flip between portrait and landscape, as hand held device technology was designed for. The reality is that 90% of people will be engaging with it via mobile. Is there a paid tier of ISSUE that does this? Or something like it? On the "Magnum Photographers wouldn't go to Paris Photo" I personally know at least one that did. So...
Audio and still , funny you should say that ive been recording city sounds train, trams and also bird and water fall, river sounds to go with stills. Great video, yes Annie toured with the stones i love her work from that era.
Yes, « Photo » still exists in France. More recent and modern magazines would be fisheye and Polka, and I’ve always wondered why there are no real equivalent offerings in the USA?
I have a question that has been bothering me for a long time: I love the work of Matt Black. … Is it OK, to depict people, who are struggling or suffering in an aesthetically pleasing way? … And if yes, why? Thanks. ✌🏻
Thanks for answering my question. Always like the history and condition of the industry. And yes famous people like to keep things compartmentalized for the sake of privacy.
Q: I travelled through Japan for 3 weeks (unfortunately that was the only amount of time I could stay but hopefully more next time) and I did shoot quite a lot. I want to self publish this work as a book and have barely shared any of it on social media as I don't want to spoil the work before it is ready. So my question is: Should I share this work before to try and promote it or keep it exclusive for the book? I don't have a massive following, which means I will have to do quite a lot of marketing in order to sell this book but I don't know if it would be better for the public to be familiarised with the imagery before or not. PS: super excited to see the videos from Antartica. It has been my dream to go there ever since I can remember. I hope you enjoy it :)))
why do you want to sell the book? That will, often times, take much of the fun out of the process, and if you don't have a following or haven't sold books before, or both, they why not just make something cool for yourself. Keep it personal.
@@DANIELMILNOR505 because I am proud of the photos and I don't want to waste it simply putting it on instagram, that's boring and not what I want + there are some people interested in the book and won't be a big run, just a few :) so ultimately it will be very personal
I understand your thoughts on Instagram and social medias - you sound you overlay the celebrity photos and Instagram ? Anyways I always enjoy your Q&A as one of the opinions in the business.
@@DANIELMILNOR505 overlap ... was probably in my head... what I was trying to say (or ask) is that celebrity photos and instagram are in the same category in your head ? at least this is my impression.
Annie Leibowitz is like the In-n-Out burger, or if you want more fancy, the Michelin star of photography. Everybody says it's good but you don't know what the big deal is; so you try it, and try again, and again, and you still don't know what's the big deal is.
I think she was good for a long time, but also remember how much the industry changed. And how much things like access and time with subjects changed. The days of Annie, Claxton, etc. are gone.
I like the fact that cinematographers carry still life cameras. I enjoy movies and consistently view them through the lens of compositions. Thanks again Dan. 📷
I agree with the point on bookmaking. I’ve got quite a few drafts in my blurb software (from trips etc) but whenever I make the page design it just looks so bad that I feel I need to learn all of the points you mentioned. I started editing years ago by just following this old instagram trend of pulling the blacks and the S curve. Took me long to develop a look I like (on the screen) but then in the software it looks pretty flat. Any suggestions on where to start (i.e learning the edit or the design part)
There are tons of good books on page design, so just find one that resonates and start there. Same for type. As for editing, it's really about practice. And getting a second opinion from someone who knows how to edit.
Sorry, don't know anything about it. As for Kodak, they might. It's all about ROI. If people are willing to pay these crazy prices for film there is at least a chance.
Another great Q&A. Somehow, videos about Antarctica and the people who staff/work some of the research facilities popped up on my RUclips feed. Man, is that both a gorgeous and inhospitable place....even more so than, say, the Sonoran, Mojave or Chihuahua deserts. I cannot wait to see what you produce from that. On the topic of books or 'magazines'. They're something I've been thinking about a bit lately, but have no idea where to start. Can you recommend a couple of videos about producing a book from one's work? I've listened to you talk about it during these videos, and there's a lot I will need to learn. Just gotta figure those first couple of steps.
@@DANIELMILNOR505 Also, when you're in Buenos Aires, if you like old cemeteries and have some time, check out the Recoleta Cemetery. Lots of cool architecture and mausoleum designs.
Also related, but media shot in combat needs to go through public affairs which has really strict guidelines on what can and cannot be shown. For example, like you said, no dead American soldiers but also no media depicting soldiers being fearful, surrendering, or otherwise not looking “heroic”. Its a shame because if we had the guts to plaster photos of all the young soldiers maimed by IEDs and their mothers who were now going to have to care for their disabled sons for the rest of their lives, maybe we would have seen past the bloodlust the nation had at the time.
it's so bizarre for a country that prides itself on all this phony freedom, not all but some, and then to hide the reality of war. makes no sense to me.
Hey Dan! I found you on RUclips awhile back when searching out documentary photographers. I liked your style and take on photography. I even joined your Discord server to engage in your community. That's when you and your community basically trashed me and insulted my intelligence for simply watching Tucker Carlson. Now Tucker is slaughtering his predecessor (Fox) and I went from liking you to really being turned off by you and your foolish attitude. I am not as successful as you on RUclips, but my bricks and mortar business is growing rapidly and I'm excited for the future. You do you, booboo.....just wanted you to know how badly you turned me off. But I'm just one person with one opinion 😊 Peace out.
I've got the Roadie Air Roller. Absolutely great. I also have the Fulton 14l which I love, however on the backside where I put my camera the zipper needs to be improved. It would work its way open before I put a fix to it.
Most drone shots are passé, says the guy double exposing his shots like it's 2011. That's hilarious. Keep it coming.
I see WAY more drone than doubles. I do see some great still drone images, but the vid stuff is just useless at this point.
