    Epic! absolutely epic! For me, too young to have witnessed the magnificent group C in the 80's this brings tears to my eyes. I faintly remember the Rothman's Porsches, but this is a much more up to date and hands on experience.

      Preaching to your choir!
      !!!THX to everybody envolved in putting those cars on the track nowadays!!!
      Watching them live these days (at Spa) is half the fun, as they aren't racing as hard as in those days, obviously.
      This also applies to Group B Rally Cars!
      God, I wish to be born earlier!
      Those were the good old days...
      It's still a great feeling being around these cars, hearing and smelling them, it's truly epic!

      Daniel Schwarz I know the feeling, I was born in 1993, the wrong era is my era. The 70's and 80's is the peak of motorsports excitement, be it endurance, grand prix, rallying (group 4 and b), etc. There are very few exceptions to this rule.
      At least with rallying the old dogs still can fight tooth and nail(the escorts and 911s mostly).
      Bring hardcore racing back to the track.

      I was born in the 70's so I grew up in the 80's. I didn't get to see much racing on TV, but I read about them in any good car mag I could get my hands on.

    Group-C, a legendary raceclass filled with outragious, brutally fast and powerfull monsters. The Jägermeister 962 is one of my favourites along with the Jag XJR9. But nothing beats the sound of the C9 and 787B. After all those years, i still miss them. Thumbs up for you and the enthousiasts that keep them alive!

      The 962C was about three years older than the C9. It also won a lot more races than the C9, including this one. I actually rate the 956/962 the greatest of all racing Porsches and that includes the 917. That's what its race record says too. In four seasons there were only four or five races won by anything other than Porsches. That makes it arguably the greatest ever.

    I'm 100% sure I know what I'm talking about.
    The Peugeot 908 (HDi FAP) was an LMP that was ran as Audi's top competitor from 2007-2011.
    The Peugeot 905, debuting in 1991, then modified to the 905 Evo 1B in 1992 and ran again in 1993, winning both years, was a group C1 World Sportscar (The only error I made).
    Not to mention, two cars had completely different engines.
    Peugeot 908 had a 5.5L Turbodiesel V12, that revved about 6500rpm
    Peugeot 905 had a 3.5L V10, that revved about 12500rpm.

  • @PSNcharlie97
    @PSNcharlie97 11 лет назад +1

    @Harri Clein, the 962C just wasn't all that competitive on high speed tracks after '88. Porsche had announced that they would make no more factory efforts for Le Mans following the win that Jaguar managed at Le Mans, their stance literally was "We've won too much". The only 962s that raced after '88 were privateer cars, so it's granted that a private effort would not come close to the manufacturer efforts of Mercedes Benz. Plus, the C9 just had too much power under the bonnet for the 962 to win.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 5 лет назад

      Your first comment was more accurate than your second. Porsche were still winning races as late as 1988. Porsche dropped their factory support just as Mercedes announced their factory sponsorship for Sauber.
      The Sauber's power has been overestimated. In reality, they were not that different. It looks different here because they are not running to Group C fuel allocation regulations. When they were the difference wasn't that great. The spec sheet figures show pretty clearly that the Mercedes M119 and say, the Jaguar V12 had similar amounts of power and torque but delivered differently (the Sauber's torque "curve" was almost flat between 3,000 and 6,000 RPM). Both had about the same power in race trim and both had about the same torque. Martin Brundle said the biggest difference was in handling and road holding. He found he could just about keep up with the Sauber in straight line but couldn't quite do it in twisty stuff.

  • @RedPetrol76
    @RedPetrol76 12 лет назад +1

    The consumption was limited to 600 litres per 1000 kilometres. But they abandoned fuel amount limits when they moved to 3.5L era.

  • @gturner38
    @gturner38 11 лет назад +1

    1000 hp only meant something in qualifying. During the race, they were running to a fuel number. As for Group C vs. LMP1, Group C would be faster in a straight line, especially in qualifying, but they wouldn't have a hope of keeping up through the corners.

      HardcoreLiberal Group B cars, except the Metro 6R4 and maybe one other, were TURBOCHARGED. Group C cars adhered to an FIA efficiency formula, especially at LeMans. It was built in 1980/81, in the shadow of the Mid East fuel crisis. It was meant to be (relatively) GOOD ON GAS. At the time Reporters and "enthusiasts" like yourself decried them as 'boring" and "soulless". Ha ha, how things change. By the way, the sixties and early seventies was even better. Targa Florio anyone? ECOnomy is very relevant to racing, even going way back to its inception, look at how hard Ferdinand Porsche tried to make the Mercedes Benz racers more efficient on gas, back in the 20's 30's? Race cars race on our CO2 filled EARTH, not some abstract fuckin' place with no environment. YOU are a 'mentalist" and YOU are talking out yer ass, libby. Keep draggin' your knuckles.

      The 787B in Charge/Renown markings was a beautiful car but it was otherwise, nothing special. I wish I could say it was because I have always liked it. It's still probably the best looking car from that era, IMHO. I have always liked the idea of a rotary because I think the formula is strengthened by variety. Winning the Le Mans 24Hrs in 1991 was a remarkable achievement and as everyone knows, they were the first - and for over a quarter of a century - the only Japanese manufacturer to do so. In a race like this, in this company, I doubt very much it could have kept up. I'd have liked to see a 7.0 litre Jaguar XJR-9 though.

    But remember these cars were built during a time when there was no limitations at all like there is today. 1000hp under 2500lbs is what group c cars are all about. Not even the Veyron could beat them.

    Holy crap, the 962 had an H-pattern shifter! Never woulda guess that. I assumed they all had sequentials by then!

      Once more, FIA changed the rules to restrict performance of group C cars that were winners of the time : Porschemercedes Jaguar and Aston to the benefit of Peugeot who were using small F1 3,5 liter engine. We must remember FIA did the same in 1968 and 1972 when they banned big engines that were winning at that time FordFerrari Chaparral and Porsche so that Matra using small 3 liters engine could finally win Le Mans. French Politics making the rules in sport Car Racing.

    and the sauber c9 drove the 1989 le mans with 800hp and they were big 5l V8 engines, they were the fastest cars at that time

      962 is years older then the C9 and yet it is still the fastest car. #1 is 962 with an average speed of 251 kmh #2 is 917 average speed 250 kmh and #3 is C9 average speed of 249 kmh. Check it out. C9 and C11 is just overrated for the monstrous engine sound.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 Год назад

      In race trim the C9 was never much more than 730hp. Group C was not an unlimited formula. It was a fuel allocation formula.

      @thethirdman225 Год назад

      @@aerodynamic1440 No point in that comparison. The 917 never raced on the Porsche Curves. The White House stretch was much faster and only ended at the Ford Chicane. The track was longer and twistier in the 1980s than it was in 1971.

    The regs don't require them to be ugly. The windtunnel does. Designers have increased their understanding of how to effectively move air around the car, just as F1 designers have, and it's led to more complicated designs.

      That was actually a 956, from memory. The 956 and 962 were totally underrated. They won race after race and they remained competitive up to 1989 when Porsche withdrew their factory support. In the four seasons covering 1983 to 1987, Porsches won all but four races.

    die hatten damals immer mehrere autos am start z.b LeMans 1989 gelb rot weiss zum unterscheiden der autos, weil sie sonst nur silber hatten so konnte man immer schon sehen um welches auto es sich handelte

    Didnt the nissans at the time have more power argueably?

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 Год назад

      That’s the rumour. But the power outputs of these cars are not totally defined and the internet would have you believe just about anything.
      In fact, the Nissan was a purpose built race engine, while the Sauber Mercedes was a racing version of the M119 road car engine. The fuel allocation standard meant that the teams struggled to get the best trade off between power and fuel economy they could. The object was to get as much power out of every drop as possible. The differences were likely to be relatively minor. I have read that the Nissan put out about 800 hp against 730 for the Mercedes and 745 for the Jaguars but I’m not convinced it’s true. I can’t imagine that the difference in engine design was that great that it could improve performance by that much.
      Even so, in the race, the cars rarely ran to maximum revs before shifting. The Saubers ran a maximum of 7,000 rpm but the drivers rarely exceeded 6,500 in the race.

    На этом видео представлены "энтузиасты", а не "профессиональные гонщики/гоночные команды" по меркам "современного автоспорта". суть заключалась в том, что соревнования "Группы Ц", в профессиональном автоспорте, закрыли в 1996-м году по причине финансовых и юридических трудностей и не закрытых/завершенных судебных разбирательств. Сейчас стоит различать гоночные авто "группы Ц" и "класса Ц": "Группа Ц" - автомобили представляют из себя одноместные "болиды" (пилот сидит по центру или смещен от центра вправо или влево); "Класс Ц" - кузова гоночных автомобилей и размещение водителя в обязательном порядке напоминают/соответсвуют конкретному серийному авто, конкретно дорожного "Ц-класса".
    Современные гоночные авто "класса/группы Ц" отличаются относительно малыми стоимостью, габаритами и массой И, в то же время, относительно высоким соотношением масса-мощность и/или мощность-масса (2-3 лошадинные силы на 1 кг массы всего автомобиля не редкость).
    Совсем недавно обсуждали/смотрели ролик/клип @Raceism 2019@ с "бежевым БМВ" (Е30), который врезался в пластмассовый, заполненный водой отбойник - в той машине было соотношение масса-мощность, равное "3,2 л/с на 1 кг". У "бежевого Е38" было "3,4".

    in Forza, specially Forza 4, these cars compete with modern LMP1s like if they were brought back to this era again, its so epic and awesome and see how they would compare and they are a lot better lol.
