  • Business Insider asked three registered dietitians to debunk 18 of the most common weight loss myths. They explain that you don't need to purge your diet of fat or carbs to lose weight, skipping meals can backfire, and fad diets like the ketogenic diet don't often work. Beyond debunking weight loss strategies, they explain that weight loss is not just about discipline. It's about genetics, access to healthy food, and your relationship to food.

I like their debunking of the "don't eat late" myth. I tend toward eating a lighter breakfast and lunch and then eating at least half my calories for the day at the dinner table and an evening snack. I've lost over 40 pounds in recent months eating like this, because it works for me. Breakfast is usually a couple of eggs or overnight oats with yogurt and berries, lunch is usually a light soup or salad, I'll have a light afternoon snack (usually a piece of fruit) and then I'll have a bigger dinner and a light evening snack. You have to find what works for you.

Eating large meals before sleeping is a method Sumo wrestlers have used for centuries to GAIN weight.
I'd like to know how much weight these women have actually lost, because I used to be super thin. I literally could not gain weight no matter how much I ate when I was 18-20.
I would not take weight loss advice from myself back then. Take advice from someone who has actually struggled with weight.
Actually taking in a super low amount of calories was the only thing that worked for me.
Everyone on RUclips with a video camera can pretend to be an expert, but nothing trumps real experience, not even a degree.

I don't burn a lot of calories in the evening, so I'd rather not eat the way you do. Like maybe I will have a lighter dinner, that is less carbs heavier since I not moving at night and don't need fuel. Maybe you are an night owl or don't sleep early. Different lifestyles different diet methods. Also losing weight is not always an indicator. Losing body fat % and seeing real body composition i.e. inches is a better indicator. Muscles, for example, are heavier.

@@arkdrawingandstuff5512 Yeah, that's why vegans have to take supplements or end up in the ER with severe deficiencies... 😅 Ovo/lacto vegeterianism is healthy, but pure veganism is not. It _can_ be, but it is very challenging to get right -- unless you're from a vegan culture that has spent generations developing a cuisine for it... and still. We certainly eat too much meat nowadays (fails the "moderation" test). Once in a while (e.g. once a week and on special occasions) should be enough when you can get your protein from other nutritionally richer sources (legumes, eggs, dairy...). We call it "flexitarianism" nowadays, but it's just been the regular diet of humans for millions of years, the one we've evolved for, until the industrial revolution and the green revolution gave us abundance and made us lose our sense of moderation, especially when it comes to meat and carbs. As for keto, it is a weight loss and/or metabolic correction diet (to lower blood sugar, get rid of carb cravings and kick-start fat burn, correcting for our immoderate consumption of carbs). It can only be temporary. It's unhealthy in the long run.

@@SmirkyWaters some people have to go vegan because they can’t digest most meats properly yes they probably have to use supplements but it’s what they HAVE to do, and for keto it’s used to manage many medical problems and yes it’s suggested to only do 6 months on it but if you keep up on a balance you shouldn’t need supplements or very little my point is lots of people can’t just do moderation and even when they are off keto will still have to be low carb

This has helped me a lot. Thank you so much for opening my eyes. I have lost 3 sizes thanks to this.... I used to wear 4XL clothes in March, now I wear XL clothes and its been only 8 months. Losing inches helped me stay consistent, instead of fretting upon weight. Honestly, weighing machines only depress you. The only right way to know you are coming in shape by checking your waist. And for that, switching from simple carbs to complex carbs... was the greatest advice.
To anyone who is doubtful if this works or not: I have tried it, tested it, and this is the only knowledge that worked on me. I am a person who has Hypothyroidism and PCOS. I was once that person who COULDN'T lose weight, even with medicines, even with multiple gym sessions and various diet routines. I gave up on weight loss until I came across this.
What I did, was booking an appointment with a certified dietician. Her diet was hard to follow but I used all the knowledge in this video and stuck to complex carbs, avoiding juices and diet sodas etc. I eat steam-rice everyday (its a bargain, can't afford brown rice- its too pricey, too hard and too time consuming to cook). And I added 1 hour cycling to my routine where I just ride a bike every evening. Of course this was my dietician's idea. She thought it was better for me to go cycling in the evening instead of morning.

I still eat carbs but I take care that I don’t overdo it. She doesn’t make me cut out any food groups as she says it’s not feasible for the long term and might result in weakness. I have already lost 8 kilos in the past month and a half and got my first period in months without any medication. Can you please share more details on what helps? I have a long journey to go.. about 30 more kilos 🥲🥲. But I’m determined and positive, I maintain a healthy mindset that I’m doing it for me and no one else. I use a heart rate monitor to determine about how many calories I burn on a normal day (my base metabolic rate) and I eat less than that to ensure consistent weight loss.
I think eliminating snacks is also a good idea. You should only eat when you are hungry, (regular hungry not starving) and eat with the intent of getting full. However, when I do crave a little something I found that low calorie popcorn is a great snack, you can eat a lot of it for little calories and it gives you some extra fiber.

Or black tea, or Indian blends, or coffee! Any of these really, just don't put sugar in it. Try to drink it natural, or sweeten it with NATURAL stevia (go to an organic store, don't get your stevia at your supermarket because it comes with "fillers" of artificial sweeteners and sometimes even contain sucrose and other added sugars). Personally, I've lost weight thanks to intermittent fasting but that was probably because I was eating smaller portions and decreased the amount of processed food and sugar I was consuming.
Keeping a food journal definitely helped as well because when you have a record of what you eat it's easier to see where you're falling short.

Yeah I'm mixing intermittent fasting with one meal a day dieting and I've found its really working for me.
What these guys are saying is pointing towards weakness when eating either more or the wrong things when in the non fasting period..
I'm 100% convinced that as long as you eat a high fibre diet mixed with a high good fats/other nutrition and exercise in your non fasting period it can make you feel amazing.
Also set a limit and dont exceed the portion size you set.
On the other hand if you just eat cake and KFC in your fasting period, this isn't the diet for you.
Quite a lot of what they are saying are not myths at all. Its just some people not doing the diets correctly.

This video is full of misinformation. Either it's because these so-called experts are regurgitating the same disinformation and propaganda that's been promoted for the last 70 years, or they're actually being paid by Big Ag and/or Big Pharma. Bananas DO make you fat, Bread is also a high carb food. There are NO essential carbs, the body does NOT need carbohydrates. The Ketogenic Diet is NOT difficult to maintain, and some people even transition to Keto/carnivore or full blown carnivore diets with virtually zero carbs and they're completely healthy. Transitioning to getting your energy from ketone bodies through ketosis is the way to go. Eat less than 20-30gms carbs per day and increase your protein and healthy fats.

are you eating a lot of carbs for breakfast? as in over 50 grams of it just in your breakfast? Try this go get a Big Mac meal.. tell me how fast you get hungry after eating that. The answer is in the fact that carbs actually make you hungry faster.. it's somewhere journalized in a published study.. I forget. But that's most likely the reason why.. if you balance your breakfast to be more fat heavy you won't be starving quickly.. or you can skip breakfast.. have no glucose interfere with your digestive system and be hungry by supper time lol.

Cause if you eat, specially smt heavy, close to going to sleep, it can't disrupt your sleep cause your body is still digesting the food. So if you get out a 2am and go to sleep at 4, it's ok to have smt in between (just maybe not a whole large pizza)

    • @cursedshadow

Actualy the issue with eating before sleep is about Acid reflux. If you lay down right after eating, you put strain on the lower esophageal sphincter which blocks the entrance to ur stomach from ur esophagus. If u do this every night, ur sphincter will become weak evwntualy and the acids from the stomach will leak out upwards, causing discomfort and pain. Dont eat before laying down, wait 2-3h after eating.

I think the dieticians do not study it in-depth. It was the magic took, but it worked only (for me) under 5 hours. It is a real hunger hack. What I loved in the interviews was the approach to juices (it is such a hoax); I also think all the smoothies were strangely making me ravenous. Also, the no-carb did me no favor. If anyone is wondering what simple carbs mean here without bothering to watch the video, it’s basically carbs found in packaged products (i.e. Chips, cookies, cakes, bread, etc.).
For bread, you don’t have to cut it out of your diet. Just check the ingredient list. If it has around 50 ingredients, skip it. Look for bread around 4 ingredients, more likely found at your local bakery.

So, I can say from experience, skipping meals is a bad idea for losing weight.

Back in the 1980's we were told by diet professionals to eat mostly carbs in our diet and eat the least fat possible. They encouraged us to drink fruit juices, to not eat egg yolks, to eat cereals, to switch to margarine, to drink fat free milk. Now we all know, including them, that those were wrong advices. Basically, in this video, they are debunking here what other schooled professionals told us just a few years ago. And here again, they are saying things which will be refuted by the next school of dietitians. These doctors do not know anything about modern agriculture. A yellow banana today is as sweet as a cookie. Bread made in a bakery today is made with a flour and yeast which rises in one hour instead of an entire night. These doctors are not addressing the danger in eating GMO products or transformed food, full of pesticides, hormones, and other chemicals to enhance flavors, colors. Doctors have always gone along our big corporations.

Whenever I eat starch or oil that is derived from nuts, beans, seeds or grains, I develop kidney stones within days and get chronic fever and hay fever, especially when I eat soy.
Using pork fat or sheep fat instead of cooking oil has changed my life.
Glucose is so important to the human body that it can manufacture all the glucose that it needs from fat.
It has been proven that the body becomes more efficient when it is fueled by fat instead of starch or sugar.
The human body needs about two tablespoons of high quality fat per day, as well as a minimum of 30 grams of protien, the equivalent of a kilogram of broccoli or 120g of lean meat.
Most protien sources are mostly wasted as sugar during digestion with egg whites being the most efficient at 46% protein absorption.
Plant based food, carries the risk of both artificial and naturally uccuring pesticides and harmful heavy metals.
Rice, for example is known to grow best in soil that contains a slightly elevated level of arsenic, while cyanide used to be sourced from the seeds of fruit. Think about that, the next time someone recommends almond milk or grape seed oil.
While green leaves are an important source of folic acid, sheep farmers has to guard against their flock suffering liver failure from eating to much broad leave green weeds. Compounds found in spinach, lettuce, etc. may cause kidney stones.
The sources of the nutrients are very important as each blood-type has a biological niche, as written about by Peter J. D'Adamo in his book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, first edition, 1997.

Instead of using olive, you can put in a blender 1/3 onion, a bit of garlic, herbs like coriander and 2 cups of water with a pinch of sea salt and spinach and a small peppers can (guajillo, habanero, chipotle) and then you cook your meat or veggies with it. I am a senior and I have seen diet fads come and go. It's actually quite funny that people love to jump onto a new food fad. It's simple. People need to eat whole foods, as fresh as possible. Lots of fresh greens, fresh fruits, an apple, not apple juice, a whole egg, not just egg whites, fresh nuts, not sugared roasted nuts, fresh meats or fish if you eat those things, not processed like bologna or hot dogs. Herbs and spices are wonderful. Onions and garlic are extremely healthy. A good variety of foods to get as much nutrients as possible. The more the food is tampered with the less it is healthy for you. Drinking the occasional glass of red wine is good for you if added sugar hasn't been used in the process of creating it. Eating sweets once in a while is okay if you generally eat well. Your body can deal with it but if one eats fried foods, soft drinks and lots of sweets, you will die young.
As for bread, you mention if it gets moldy in a couple of days, it's good. I disagree. If bread gets moldy, it means the yeast was not allowed to rise fully therefore it continues to rise as it sits in your bread box or in one's stomach which is really bad news. In Europe, where they bake bread properly, bread gets hard but never moldy. Bread in America got transformed into almost a cake like food.

Actually, intermittent fasting (skipping breakfast) helps me control cravings. Also made me realize, many times when I thought was hungry, I was just thirsty. But every body and person is different and different things work for different people. Like not all diets work for everyone, fasting also doesn't work for everyone. Do what feels right and listen to your own body and learn to understand it

That's more because your personal schedule and tastes have made it so that method works for you in terms of adherence. It's not the intermittent fasting itself that is making it effective. It's that, for you, you've found that putting yourself on a more strict meal timing schedule lets you keep your meals within the caloric and nutritional ranges you need. But for myself, for instance, intermittent fasting does not fit with what I need to do. I spread my meals out more throughout the day, in part because of the calorie requirements I have, but also because I'm trying to maximize muscle building, meaning I want to keep the meals to around 40g of protein (around the "effective" amount your cells can hold on to and make use of at a time) each, leaving a couple hours in between to digest. So I'm eating all day, but the meal sizes aren't particularly huge for me. It's all about adherence.

When I started targeting 500-800 calorie meals and using smaller dishes, I was still satisfied without feeling full up and I slowly and steadily lost weight. Years later I'm falling into those same habits of having unnecessarily large meals and I have to get back into better habits.

Nine out of ten will tell you to eat whole foods in abundance, including protein, fat, and carbohydrates, and probably advise you on roughly what your calorie intake should be, give or take. This isn't for you to obsess about calories, but to give you an idea of what your diet should look like if you want to achieve your weight loss goals in a healthy way. Skipping meals: No breakfast. Meal 1 around noon. Meal 2 in the evening. Maybe some snacks. That's skipping breakfast.
Intermittent fasting: Meal 1 ("Breakfast") at 12:00. Meal 2 ("Lunch") at 3:30. Meal 3 ("dinner") at 7:30.

After gaining weight from the pandemic and working from home, myFitnessPal (a calorie logging app) was the #1 reason I was able to lose weight. I could eat whatever I wanted so long as it was within my daily allowance and it really helped me understand what I was consuming. Some of my favorite meals I didn't realize were in excess of 1000 calories (my favorite granola especially was a surprise)! So now I just eat those as a treat rather than on a regular basis. It also made me more intentional and plan my meals for the day because I learned that I could still have a delicious plate of pasta for dinner, so long as I have a lighter breakfast and lunch. I lost 15lbs thanks to the app and am back at my weight before the pandemic and feel better than ever!

Avocados are a better source of potassium and dietary fiber without all the sugar and starch. I didn't loose weight until I reduced the carbs in my diet. 4 years ago I adopted a ketogenic diet, lost 100lbs and have kept it off. It is a perfectly sustainable lifestyle. I eat less than 35g of crabs a day. Doing that I can eat tons of great vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, avocado, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, leafy greens, etc.. No need for bread, cookies, apples, bananas, pancakes, potatoes and other foods that are high in starches and sugars. On a ketogenic diet I don't get hungry like I used to. If my body needs energy, it utilizes the available fat. I usually eat one large meal a day at about 6PM. I don't have issues with loosing energy or getting ravenous. I have had side effects for sure - like coming of medication for type-2 diabetes, coming off blood pressure medication, lower cholesterol, lower triglycerides, higher testosterone, reduced joint pain, better sleep, better bowel movements, less skin problems (acne, eczema), new wardrobe.

Curent nutritionist have learn their jobs on school that still taught based on old myth and old nutrition research.
that most nutrisionist don't keep up to date with the latest research and lastly that nutrition is a very complicated subject and there isn't just bad and good.
Ex: a lot of fat is bad in the case you eat lots of carbs, it isn't in the case you don't.
high cholesterol is linked to heart disease but it can be the oposite in certain case.
you have bad and good cholesterol (LDL and HDL) but turns out neither of these are actually bad within good proportions.
and also there isn't just LDL cholesterol but many subtypes of it.
in brief, nutrition is very complicated and no one really understand completly how it works.
lattest research is closer to the truth and nutritionist tend to not be up to date.
which is way you can have 2 different actual expert in the field that will have an oposite argument.
      that's just how science works.
