- Ciao everyone! Today I'm sharing some tips on how I style vintage clothes. Styling vintage and thrifted clothing with your closet essentials is a great way to be stylish, sustainable and ethical. Vintage clothing can sometimes come across as too costume-y or intimidating to incorporate into a capsule closet, so these are some of the tips I use to style vintage so you can actually wear it and love it!

You're so right: Current hair, makeup and modern accessories keep your vintage pieces from looking like costumes. Fun video!
yes! Glad you liked it thank you for watching ! xx
I was an extra in “Killing Kennedy” and got costumed in full 1960s vintage pieces! It was a good look for my body shape. ALSO that tan suit was just WAITING for you, it’s perfect! The pants fit like a glove!

The suit with loose t-shirt and sneakers looked amazing on you!!!
Thank you! It's a new fave combo!
I should give you a big thank you. I am coming to united states for studies upcoming fall from Bangladesh. I wore mostly traditional clothes here. yes! Was very happy to have found it! xx
This might seem super random, but so many of these tips are useful for using vintage fabrics to make quilts which is something I do A LOT - by mixing them with basic solids, modern fabrics, and in modern patterns, it could help the unique but very vintage-looking fabrics I find seem less dated and make my quilts less grandma-y. Your unexpected influence in the quilting world! hahahaha!
haha so awesome I had no idea!! Thanks for sharing and watching! xx
The first suit you wore! I love!!!
Thanks Connie! It was quite the find! ❤️

Loved the video & am feeling inspired to go thrifting! My favorite bit though was that you accessorized every layout with a book. A keen mind IS the ultimate accessory!
Haha loved that Dena thanks so much for the kind comment! xx
I love your new vintage suit!
A friend gave me an 80’s Jean Paul Gautier light blue pinstripe summer lightweight, high waisted, pleated front,, cuffed tighter hem pants that end just above my ankles. She told me that they were part of a suit. The jacket that she has long discarded had huge padded shoulders. I decided to put it through the washing machine and wear it super casually with a white T-shirt and white sneakers back in 2004. . Every time I wear, I get compliments. The washing machine took the starch out of them and I love how they drape and flow on my body.
I also have a 90’s taupe floor length sheath spaghetti dress in subtle python print. I cut the hem to just above my ankles. I also cut the lining to about 3 inches above my knees so that my legs are visible through the sheer python print. Throw on some white sneakers, put the dress over a crisp white T and voilà!
Thank you for your valuable tips Alyssa! Absolutely mix decades, keep hair and make up current.
Bonne semaine chère Alyssa! 34K and rising! 🎊🎉

Love the Bill Blass red shirt Alyssa; I remember when you bought it whilst thrift shopping with your mum!
Yes! So glad I can finally start wearing it! xx thanks for watching
I liked all the outfits-- you know what looks good on you (your body type), & how to style items w/style hacks to create new or updated looks. My personal favourite is the striped shirt, jean jacket, cream silk skirt & the metalic woven brogues. Thanks for these vintage tips Alyssa!
Alyssa, P.S. how do you prevent blazer sleeves for getting permanent "arm wrinkles?" (Those wrinkles that form where/whenthe sleeves are pushed up to the elbow). Over time wouldn't it limit wearing the sleeves down? What do you do for the longevity of the garment-- particularly if you wear it in the colder (sleeves down) as well as the milder months (sleeves up)?
That suit is incredible!
ahh thanks Susan - I'm not going to pretend to be bashful about it i'm in LOVE with it! xx
I love outfit #3. I have learned to look at my closet differently thanks to you. I am a size 16/18 and I appreciate how you teach the viewer to use what they have and use our imagination. Thank you

Haha thanks girl glad you liked it xx
Another tip for vintage: sometimes just changing the buttons on an item can make an unbelievable difference (pearly vintage buttons - I'm talking about you). Works well especially on vintage blazers. I know it's not necessarily a styling tip, but it's a really easy way to make your garment feel more contemporary and makes it unique!
The suit combo with T was truly amazing 😍
Thanks so much! It will become a staple for sure! :)

Obsessed with your channel! Thank you for posting such amazing content!
you are so kind Kristen! It is my pleasure!
i’m quite the opposite whenever people ask me about my vintage style lol i fully embrace the hair and makeup of the era and that’s what people compliment me on the most. i’ll mix and match vintage clothing with some modern and other eras but try to keep that original class/elegance of the past which people always love
Love your hacks on how to use an existing piece and create a totally different look, like tucking the tee under your bra and tucking the knot from the tied stripe shirt under the shirt. Keep them coming : )
So glad you liked these ideas Mindy! Thanks for watching xx

Ooh sounds lovely! Will be perfect for summer:) Thanks for watching Ruth! xx
Great tips for someone looking to incorporate vintage pieces into modern style. Aside from collecting classic pieces, I do pretty much the opposite of this. But then I'm drawn to more of a 40's to 50's vibe from head to toe. It's amazing how much classic style can vary from person to person.
40s and 50s has beautiful classic silhouettes! Thanks for watching:)
Love the dotted dress
Thank you!!
Great tips, so inspirational! I may have to get something vintage soon, I'll probably start with an accessory and work my way up;)

Love the suit and striped shirt! 👌😄
Yay! those were my faves too❤️ Thanks for watching 🥰
It's allways kind of funny when I hear that the 90's are vintage... :-) but the 90's WAS 30 yearsago. LOL. Well, it just goes to show that fashions change but style remains.
I love your outfit arrangements and that light colour suit is great and would be nice whith your red Bill Blass shirt! Love the polka dots and the stripes. Those are timeless classics. Well done Alyssa. I would love to see more vintage shopping in Ottawa. And your favorite hangouts!
Ciao bella!
So glad you like those combos! I will definitely keep thrifting and taking the channel along - so fun!
@@AlyssaBeltempo Thank you Alyssa for all your fun videos. I look forward to them every Sunday. I visited Ottawa over a year ago in the fall and really loved the place. I would so love to see more of real life in Ottawa. Like great coffee shops, stores, vintage shops like the one you took us to in a previous video. THANKS!!!
Thanks for sharing. Really liked all of the looks; but oh My.... the polka dot dress with red shirt!! I would love to have an outfit like that. I did get some great styling ideas with pieces I already have.
So glad you liked the looks Jan, and that you got some styling ideas! that's the goal! Thanks for watching! xx
Great looks!
Thank yoiu Sharon! xx
Hello Alyssa, I love your styling the clothes you already have or shopping your wardrobe so much!!!you brought me so many ideas and I developed my style.of course I have to declutter my closet a bit, but I hesitate, because my also vintage clothes becomes a new life. What I will give away for certain are the flowery prints, exception: scarves. I am a classic edgy Type, cool Winter with blond hair.I had a cloud test for over 30 years from a professional. My age is 68 but I don’t feel my age. The only thing is that after all activities I need more time to relax.😅. I am Dutch living in Germany, so forgive me the faults in my English reply. Thank you very much for all your nice videos, Anke
Love all of them. Specially the suit. I m not a big fan of red shirt my self but u can pull anything off:). See u next Sunday 😘😘
aw thanks Neha :) Have a great week! xx
love this video as always. i would love to shop more vintage pieces however im tall for a women, 5'11 so items often come up short. do you regularly get your items altered? thanks again for the amazing content.
Hey there! Ah yes absolutely - I will often get items altered - vintage or not. Finding a tailor or seamstress with imagination and that knows how to alter for your body is crucial :) I also find vintage items are great for altering - esp if you're tall because there was more of a seam allowance back then so garments could be let out or made longer vs. the inexpensive items we see nowadays are all about cutting costs so there is not a lot of extra fabric at hems etc. So glad you like the channel :) Thanks so much for watching! xx
Great outfits to be inspired! P.s you have gorgeous hair go loos more often 👌
Thank you so much for watching! xx
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE 💟💟 However, I can not believe 90s, is "vintage" Lawd! I'm officially O.L.D 😭
Idk but I don't think 90s is "vintage" I might be weird but I consider vintage 50s and older items; 60s - 2000s is retro for me
Ha ha me too.
And me...😂😂😂...it’s all good.
Me Justme I feel you. It cracks me up that people think everyone in the 90s dressed like Save by the Bell or a Nirvana video.
Learning something new? When did 80s & 90s become vintage? Retro, maybe...
The cut of the pantsuit is perfection. I love the fit of the pants so much. See you next Sunday!💕
technically anything older than 25 years is vintage! Crazy i know! Thanks so much for watching Lori and have a great week! xx
It's not just me that thinks of the 80s and 90s as retro! To me, vintage is the 40s and 50s. I have noticed, though, that when I go to vintage shops, the stock is predominately 80s.
Each look is a win. Love the detail on the pants. So sleek. My takeaway is keep everything pretty classic and it should work. Wish I could score vintage as well as you do. How often do you shop/look? Is that part of your success?
Great q! I font go often normally but that is the secret - going often and being patient and open minded ! Thank you for watching I'm sure you'll find a treasure soon!
Hi Ayssa, so glad you did vintage styling. One of my favorite topics! ;) The chucks with the suit--perfecto! I like to wear chucks with my thrifted trousers. It's a nice contrast. The crop top idea is great for making the outfit edgy. My preference is for a longer crop, so it's functional for more occasions (like work)--I like it when the crop is just a touch longer than my high waisted pants. But the higher crop does look more dramatic & cool!
So glad you liked the video ! And yes a longer crop would be more versatile - I love that look you described too! Thanks for watching! xx
Red shirt and polka dress was just manifique!!!
Hi Alyssa, luv the last Jean jacket outfit best, great style❣
I take my vintage styling cues from Lemaire's and Phoebe Philo's (formerly Celine's designer) runways. They have this impossible magic that allows them to re-invent classic 70s/80s pieces and transform them into trendy and elegant. For sundresses and blouses, or general summer clothes, brands like Sezane or Reformation are having their moments. They make cute inspo.
Alyssa Your Videos Creates More Brain Cells is my head When i Start Thinking about Making Different kinds of Outfits "With pieces i already Own in my Closet!" This type of EXERCISE Sure Does Sparks Creativity Fr imho! So thankful for Your Channel and You! Never Stop.
Aw what a kind comment Eunice I really appreciate the encouragement and am so glad you're enjoying the Channel:) thanks for watching! xx
Well... i love vintage too. I mixed my polkadot dress with my sneaker.
Btw, i love your stripes shirt's outfit.
Glad you're a vintage fan too! Thanks for watching!
I am wearing something vintage almost every day now. Some of the younger teachers come by every morning to “Guess that Vintage”. I wish they’d wear what they want, and not live vicariously through my outfits. AND I wish I’d started dressing like ‘me’ when I was their age. It’s too bad confidence and not giving a hoot about other people’s opinions takes so long to cultivate. Dressing in things that feel like they fit my identity gives me joy every day.
Once found a blaser from1940ies,embroded cardigan a. Skirt from1950ies...and,yes,dress from1920ies...love wearing Them,they are all,typical from the decades,lucky me...❤️
