I can stand right in front of the parade deck all day and see dozens of recruits at various stages of development getting drilled by their DI's. Seeing them at the end of the course is amazing though. In 13 weeks to go from a scared shitless kid to a Marine drilling like a fine tuned watch is quite the change. Highly recommend a visit there and hit the museum too. Excellent place and historic on many levels.

Went to boot camp at MCRD in San Diego early February of 1990.
I was 6ft & 140lbs soaking wet. My first night in training platoon when we were standing in front of our racks before lights out wearing nothing but skivvies & flip flops all three DI's surrounded me asking why my parents had never fed me.
Of course every answer I gave was wrong & they deemed me "Private POW". So for the next three months that is what I was called. Luckily I did qualify for "double rats" so at the end of boot camp I had gained 25lbs in less than three months.
Definitely funny stuff & memories that stick to you for life.

It is a theater that they perform, and yes it is hard but when ever and instructor is not present they are preparing for the next lesson, eating and resting, usually they also have enourmous amounts of coffee, energy drinks and what ever.
As my old Squad leader told us, "What do you think the DI do when you cant see them, they are stuffing their face, sleeping and changing to clean outfits, it is fucking magic what happens when you are not looking."
What i have heard about U.S. DI's the frog voice is from screaming 18 hours a day, and yes the screaming hurts, it can get so bad that you spit blood from screaming. And it is very normal for new DI's to lose 20 pounds durring their first teams basic trainning.

They were both ssgts and while they didn't let anything slide and always made you give your best they also cared for the junior marines and mentored them to make them want to do better. Thank you for posting this video. My favorite was from one of the marines I was speaking of I don't want to drop names but he was the loud one with the moon beam chewing the ass of the weak recrute that tried to skip out of the O course. honestly i have much respect for the guy at 3:00 . the fact that he is going trough hell and doesn't give up shows strong mind. his body is a wreck but he still finds the power to push further. This is what you need in any army. A body can be shaped in many ways, it's not a matter of "if" is a matter of "when". But if you don't have the spirit to push trough , nothing else matters. I always told juniors at the dojo, don't count your push-ups, do push-ups until it becomes a struggle and than do 10 more. Always start your 10-20 push-ups after you brought your body to it's limit. The only way to pass a limit is to reach it and push it over like "get away bitch, make room". That guy over there seems he aknowledged he made mistakes and he really want's to correct his life. Good guy, i really hope he made it in the military in the end. The last thing you need is a perfect body 6ft5in guy pumping his chest around like a gorilla and in action he throws his gun and surrenders and cryes for his mother. You want a guy that will go forward against all odds. That's why they invented the Medal of Honor.

Your vocal cords literally bleed and shred. You can spit blood. They will heal, get stronger and deeper, if you're not crazy about it. You definitely have to learn how to use that to your advantage. I never was a DI but went to MCRD San Diego. I have a very baratone, loud, deep voice that projects VERY far. Like my family (many where military or former L.E.O. like me) and we trace our family back far. Preachers, military men, Kings... All the way back to the King Robert II of France in 989 A.D. to be a king and military man I figure you've got to be a damn loud mouth. Some people are just bred for it I think. I could say a lot more but I'll leave it at that.
